Srinagar, August 9 A major tragedy was averted with the timely detection of a car laden with 20 kg IED at Hyderpora on the Airport road here last evening. The IED, fitted in a pressure cooker, was recovered by the police from the car abandoned under suspicious circumstances. It was later neutralised by bomb disposal squad around 11.30 pm last night, without causing any damage. The police said that the Maruti car (9060 DLIC) was seized for further investigations. The police here said that a Pak militant of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, Mohammad Sulaiman Bhat was killed in an encounter with the security forces at Nildoora, Shopian in Pulwama district early this morning. One AK rifle with a magazine was recovered from the site of encounter. The slain militant, also known as Major Gul, was involved in several killings, bank dacoities and extortion activities. Protest demonstrations were held at Dal Gate here this afternoon following the killing of a youth allegedly at the hands of security forces around 1 pm. The police said that the youth was killed in a firing incident that was being investigated. The youth was identified as Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh from Ashtingoo, Bandipore in Baramulla district, a student of A. S College here. Eyewitnesses said that the youth, waiting for a bus, was shot at by the security forces without any provocation, which led to the protest demonstrations. The police claimed that the youth was trying to hurl a grenade towards the security forces that was spotted by the alert troops and was prevented by firing upon him. |

Jammu, August 9 Four tourists from the USA, marooned in the Zanskar Valley, were evacuated to safer places by the Army which has launched a massive rescue and relief operations in the affected areas, they said. Over 2000 persons have been evacuated and shifted to tents pitched by the Army at Angling, Mphayang and Chuchuit in Leh division, after being stranded for nearly a week. At least 17 persons have lost their lives in the state due to floods, house collapse and drowning incidents triggered by pounding rains. Army assistance has also been extended to nearly 3000 villagers in hinterland of Dikshni, Hunder, Khalsar, Warshi, Darchik, Ganasok, Archnathang, Batalik, Biamth and Slimo. With a large numbers of arterial routes blocked due to landslides, Army personnel were distributing food, water and medical supply to the villagers on foot, besides helping them retrieve their valuables from collapsed homes, sources said. Over a tonne of food material and medicines have been airdropped so far, they said. The swirling flood water has been successfully diverted and channelised to prevent further flooding of villages. Border Roads Organisation personnel were actively involved in restoring road communication to the affected regions of Ladakh, they said.

CM addresses IAF Sector Commanders Srinagar, August 9 Addressing Air Force Sector Commanders on the occasion of annual conclave here, Mr Azad recalled the role of the IAF at the time of snow tsunami, which hit various parts of Jammu and Kashmir, and the October earthquake in various areas of the state last year. Air Chief Marshal S.P. Tyagi and other senior officers of the IAF attended the conclave. The Chief Minister complimented the IAF for selecting Srinagar as the venue for holding such a prestigious conference that would create confidence among the people outside the state that Kashmir was as safe as any other place for the tourists. He said the situation in Jammu and Kashmir was fast changing and people’s faith in democracy had increased. Felicitating the IAF being in its platinum jubilee year, the Chief Minister said the force had been acclaimed all over the world for its integrity, bravery and professionalism. |

Azad for harnessing hydel potential of state Srinagar, August 9 The Chief Minister was addressing the 44th meeting of the Board of Directors of Jammu and Kashmir State Power Corporation here. He stressed the need for completion of the ongoing hydel projects so that availability of power for the people of the state was increased. He said all-out efforts needed to be made to complete the execution of the projects within the stipulated time period. Referring to mini and micro hydroelectric projects, Mr Azad said work on already allotted projects to the independent power producers should be speeded up and 25 other such projects, for which tenders had been received, too needed to be executed fast. |

3 lakh pilgrims perform Amarnath yatra Srinagar, August 9 Around three lakh pilgrims performed the pilgrimage this year, according to an official of the Amarnath Shrine Board, this being less than the number of over four lakh yatris last year. The holy mace of Lord Shiva or ‘Charri Mubarak’ led by Mahant Deependra Giri reached the cave shrine in the morning from Panjtarni today alongwith a large number of devotees. The Governor, who is Chairman of the Amarnath Shrine Board, was among those who performed the ‘puja’. He complimented the people of Kashmir for their warmth and hospitality to pilgrims and also lauded the role of various government agencies in providing facilities to them. He had a special praise for the locals for keeping available the puja material enroute the cave shrine and providing logistic support. |
