Bail pleas of Mir, Khanday deferred
Srinagar, July 7 The bail applications of former Jammu and Kashmir minister and sitting legislator Ghulam Ahmed Mir, senior IAS officer Mohammad Iqbal Khanday, BSF DIG K.C. Padhi and others arrested by the CBI in connection with the sex racket case were taken up before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Srinagar, Mr Mohammad Yousuf Akhoon. The court had on July 4 deferred their bail pleas for today. The CJM gave seven days to the CBI to file objections. None of the accused had been able to engage any counsel so far to fight their case, while the former minister’s lawyer was not present today in the court which will now take up his plea tomorrow. During the hearing, sacked state Additional Advocate-General Anil Sethi and DSP Mohammad Ashraf Mir shouted that the Indian Constitution was not applicable in Jammu and Kashmir. Immediately afterwards, the relatives and supporters of some of the accused started raising slogans and created a commotion on the court premises, forcing the police to resort to a mild baton-charge. The court was later adjourned and the bail applications would now come up for hearing on July 15. Earlier in the day, the CJM extended the judicial remand of Jammu and Kashmir Police counter-insurgency wing DSP Mohammad Yousuf Mir for further 14 days.

Jammu goes without power, water
Jammu, July 7 The power supply was snapped in the morning and was not restored
even after eight hours in the evening. Not only the hot summer but also the high level of
humidity made the people restless. Water supply to households was suspended throughout the day. Hospitals and other essential services suffered because of power failure, doctors were
not in a position to perform their duties in the radiology and other units and the patients groaned as the fans
did not run. The mobile phone services were disrupted as the batteries of the
towers did not get recharged. The Chief Engineer of the power department, Mr D.S. Pawar, said that the shutdown was due to a snag in the 400-KV
transmission line of the grid station at Gladni on the outskirts of the city. He was not in a position to say as to how much time it would take to rectify the fault. This is not for the first time that a major snag has occurred in the grid station. Such power failures were a routine affair during the peak summer. It is worth mentioning that the Comptroller and Auditor-General of India had sometime ago indicted the power department for purchasing sub-standard equipment. |
