Cong workers clash; two injured
Mandi Ahmedgarh, July 1
Disagreement among members of two factions of the Congress at Bhaini Arora village in Ludhiana district resulted in a group clash, leaving at least two persons injured seriously. The sharp-edged weapons were used freely by both groups. The Dehlon police, supervised by the Dakha Circle Officer reached the village to check the situation from deteriorating further. The injured were shifted to Civil Hospital, Pakhowal and Ludhiana.

Boycott Indian leather, says PETA

Leather manufacturers and traders feel threatened as the People for Ethical Treatment to Animals (PETA) today relaunched its campaign to encourage retailers and consumers worldwide to bycott Indian leather.

Woman jumps into canal with 8-yr-old son

A woman tied her eight-year-old son to her waist and jumped into the Sirhind canal at Jandali bridge today morning. A number morning walkers were present there at that time.

Contract killer rearrested
Ludhiana, July 1
The police today claimed to have arrested a contract killer and proclaimed offender who was wanted in two murder cases. Jagdev Singh alias Jagga had been lodged in Ludhiana jail for trial but had not returned after parole.

Autorickshaw drivers hold rally
Ludhiana, July 1
Protesting against “frequent and massive” challaning of autorickshaw drivers by the traffic police, members of the District Autorickshaw Union held a rally at Mata Rani Chowk here today. Madan Lal, president of the union, said self-employed autorickshaw drivers were being unduly harassed by traffic cops. Holding the administration responsible for increase in number of autorickshaws, he said: “It is the administration that is issuing permits for these in bulk. They should stop issuing permits so that traffic situation in the city can be controlled.”

MP announces Rs 13 lakh for CAs’ building

Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, Member Parliament, announced a grant of Rs 13 lakh as contribution towards building of the Ludhiana branch of chartered accountants over a period of three years.

Unemployed teachers hold protest rally 
Ludhiana, July 1
The Unemployed Elementary Teachers Union, Punjab, stated in a press note that they had given a memorandum to the ADC regarding the distant stations given to the newly appointed ETT teachers. They took out a protest rally outside Zila Parishad office here yesterday. They gave a memorandum to the ADC, Development, Mr Priyank Bharati.

Mayor assures ward 2 residents on amenities
Ludhiana, July 1
Mayor Nahar Singh Gill today visited Ward 2 on the Jassian Road and listened to the grievances of the people. He had been called by the shopkeepers association of the area. A majority of the problems were those concerned with the civic body with sewerage topping the list.

BKU to protest against diesel price hike

Police remand for opium smuggler
Jagraon, July 1
Ms Jatinder Walia Subdivisional Judicial Magistrate, Jagraon, sent a person in police custody for two days. Inspector Amarjit Singh Khehra, incharge Anti-Narcotic Cell, arrested Vijay Kumar Sharma of Parbatia colony, MID, police station, Sarangoo, district Faridabad, from the area of Hissowal and recovered from his possession 1 kg of opium. The Sudhar police has registered a case under Section 18, 68 and 85 of the NDPS act.

Fellowship for Dr Aulakh

Dr Baldev Singh Aulakh, professor of urology and transplant surgery at the DMCH, has been recently been awarded Chakrabaroty fellowship by the Indian-American Association (IAA). It has been written by Javed Akhtar. Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar and Jaswinder Singh, will perform in it.

Abhishek Talwar, student of Kundan Vidya Mandir School and Arjit of Bharatiya Vidya Mandir School, Kitchlu Nagar, fashioned Super Club’s eight-wicket win over Coaching Centre XI in a league match of the 10th Chaman Lal Malhotra Cricket Cup Tournament (under-14) being organised by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association at the Arya College for Boys ground here today. Abhishek scored 68 runs in which he hit 11 boundaries. Arjit made 63 with the help of nine hits to the fence.
