Fellowship for Dr Aulakh
Ludhiana, July 1 The selection committee consists of eminent people like Dr Gopal Badlani, secretary of the Endourological Society of World, and an internationally acclaimed urologist, Dr Shakti Das, Dr Harbhajan Ajrawat (president), Dr Ajay Nehra of Mayo clinic and other office-bearers of the association. According to Dr Aulakh, the aim of this fellowship was to exchange latest medical know-how in urology existing in different nations so that patients get the best possible urological treatment. Under this fellowship, Dr Aulakh attended American Urologist Association’s annual meeting. Atlanta, where latest management of male infertility, impotence, prostate and kidney stone problems and cancers of urinary bladder, prostate and kidney were discussed with thousands of urologists from across the world. During the fellowship, Dr Aulakh spent nearly a month in minimal invasive urological surgery at the Department of Cleveland Clinic Foundation (USA), a world-class urology centre at Cleveland. He learned about advanced laprascopic procedures being used in removal of cancer of kidney, donor kidney for kidney transplant, laprascopic removal of prostate and urinary bladder cancer. Laproscopic procedures to increase capacity of bladder and repair of vesco-vaginal fertility were also the focus. Also operation of prosthesis implantation used to treat incontinence of urine an impotence were discussed. Dr Aulakh interacted with 56 faculty members of the urology department. Dr Aulakh is hopeful that the fellowship will help in bringing urological /transplant centre at DMCH to world-class level whereby majority of urological operations will be done by key hole surgery in place of big incision. This will also help in attracting overseas patients and patients from other parts of the country. |
Desh Bhagat institute gives free education to rural students
Mandi Gobindgarh, June30 Desh Bhagat Institute of Hotel Management & Catering Technology at Mandi Gobindgarh were the pioneers in the field of motel management & catering technology in the region Ms Shalini Gupta, director of Desh Bhagat Institute of Management & Computer Sciences, said the Institute was undertaking various socio-cultural & educational activities. The management had also adopted two villages Saunti & Naraingarh for providing free education to the needy students. “We are imparting free coaching for foundation courses in computer fundamentals, general English, communication skills and personality development to the students of adjoining areas. We also carry out career guidance programmes for their benefit,” she added. Desh Bhagat Institute of Hotel Management is affiliated with Punjab Technical University (PTU) and is recognised by AICTE New Delhi. The students of this institute have excelled. Miss Rajvir Kaur secured first position in PTU. Miss Raminder Kaur of DBIMCS secured first position in BCA, Miss Teena Bateja secured fifth position in MCA-I, Mr Deepak Vijan secured ninth position in PGDCA and Mr Saurav Gupta secured second position in PTU. Our MBA and MCA students have been placed in top-notch companies like Ai Shri Ram Group at Dubai, Sahara India, Wipro India, Infosys, and Centurian Bank of Punjab, HSBC, HDFC bank, UTI bank, IDBI, Met Life, Connect, Lumenare, Momentum, Aviva, BSNL, HCL, Hewitt & a series of others. Our BHM students are seeking training in reputed five-star hotels like Taj View, Nikko Metro Politen, Le-Meridian, Tavoli Garden Resorts, Oberoi, Park Plaza, Radisson, Country Inn, Mugal Sheraton at New Delhi, Ludhiana, Bangalore and Jalandhar, Ms Gupta said. Desh Bhagat Engineering College and its Principal, Dr Arjun Singh, are also working hard to guide the students, she added. |
Seminars for govt teachers conclude
Amloh, July 1 As many as 138 teachers from elementary and secondary schools participated in the seminars. A.S. college students excel
Khanna, July 1 As per the college Principal, Dr Rekha Bhardwaj, the college result was 99.64 per cent. The results of 252 students were declared out of the 280 that had appeared. While 251 students were declared passed, 27 students got more than 70 per cent and 166 students got first division. Neha Jain stood first by scoring 81.87 per cent, while Priyanka stood second with 81.66 per cent followed by Sonam Devgan who secured 81.08 per cent. Their name have also appeared in the merit list. |

LSS to bring alive Kaifi Azmi’s memories
Ludhiana, July 1 Kaifi Azmi may have been popularised by his composition of lyrics for the Bollywood, but the real Azmi was too big to be restricted within that definition. He was one of the founders of the progressive movement in India. Through his poetry, he articulated the pain and pathos of the human beings, particularly the downtrodden. According to Mr S.K. Rai, general secretary of the LSS, “Kaifi aur Main” is one of the unique theatrical presentation which traces the life and poetry of the renowned Urdu poet. The letters and writings of Kaifi Azmi and his wife, Shaukat Kaifi, are brought to life by Shabana Azmi and her poet husband, Javed Akhtar. The theatrical presentation covers most facets of Kaifi’s life, including his early years, growing up in his village Mijwan in Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh, his courtship of girl from nobility, their wedding, life in Mumbai in 50s, Kaifi’s work with the mill workers and his fight against the life-threatening illness. Mr Rai promised, “We attempt to understand Kaifi Azmi, the man behind the poet...In their inimitable style, Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar take us through a very personal journey and share moments that will be cherished for many a lifetime...”. Kaifi Azmi’s real name was Athar Hussain Rizvi. He was born in a family of landlords in Mijwan village of Azamgarh district. He wrote his first gazal ‘itna to zindagi mein kisi ki khalal pade” when he was only 11. It was immortalised by gazal queen Begum Akhtar and is even sung today. He wrote his first film lyric for Buzdil, which was directed by Shahid Lateef in 1952. Recognised as one of the greatest Urdu poets, he is the most awarded Urdu poet of India. He was married to noted stage actress Shaukat Kaifi and has two children, celebrities in their own right, Shabana and Baba Azmi. |

Anti-rabies vaccination camp held
Ludhiana, July 1 These types of camps are being held for the last two years in both rural and urban areas to create awareness among dog lovers against rabies. Inaugurating the camp, Dr Paramjeet Singh Deputy Director Animal Husbandry and member, Punjab state veterinary council, impressed upon the farmers to get their dogs vaccinated against rabies. Dr Singh said in the last two years such camps had already been held at Sarabha, Pakhowal, Halwara, Sudhar, Raikot, Meharban, CMC area, BRS Nagar, Barewal, Samrala and Sekhewal (basti jodewal) in Ludhiana district. People for Animals (PFA) is also arranging such camps in Ludhiana city on their own, he said. Dr B.S. Sidhu who is also Director Animal Husbandry, Punjab, appreciated the efforts of Ludhiana district veterinarians and village panchayats who were taking keen interest in this campaign. He told that this anti-rabies vaccination campaign got a boost when in year 2005 Mr Rakesh Pandey, Minister, Punjab government donated Rs 1 lakh for purchasing anti-rabies vaccine for making Ludhiana free from rabies. Dr Vinod Gupta, Registrar, Punjab state veterinary council, who played pivotal role in making this campaign a success, said besides getting their dogs vaccinated against rabies, the dog owners should also get their pets sterilized to check the increase in population of dogs. Dr G.S. Dhillon, senior veterinary officer, Raikot who presided over the function , advised the dog owners to register their dogs in the nearest veterinary institution and maintain proper record of vaccination. As many 137 dogs including 19 stray dogs, captured by the local gram panchayat were vaccinated by a team of veterinarians comprising Dr Kulwant Singh, Dr Gurdeep Singh and Dr Paramdeep Singh. While thanking the pet owners Dr Paramdeep Singh advised them to deworm their dogs and give booster dose of anti-rabies vaccine, regularly. Dr Paramjeet Singh Deputy Director Animal Husbandry told that this campaign will continue in Ludhiana district. He also requested all non government organisations (NGO’s) to actively participate in this campaign to make Ludhiana free from rabies. |

Super Club registers another win
Ludhiana, July 1 Super Club won the toss and opted to field. In the stipulated 30 overs, Coaching Centre XI made 173 runs at the loss of nine wickets. Sunny Pandey, a class VII, student of Bharatiya Vidya Mandir School, played responsible innings of 42 runs which included 8 fours while Anant made 51 runs, studded with nine boundaries. Sharan contributed 13 runs. For the Super Club, Rohit and Kunal shared the spoils, taking two wickets each conceding 29 and 12 runs, respectively. Harnoor and Mrinal grabbed one one wicket each. The target set by the Coaching Centre proved to be a small one as the Super Club batsmen made the required runs in the 24 overs after losing just two wickets. Abhishek and Arjit made things easy for the Super Club by chipping in with 68 and 63 runs, respectively. Harnoor made five runs. For the Coaching Centre, Pushkin and Anant shared the wickets between themselves. Pushkin took one for 14 in two overs, while Anant sent down three overs and took one for 15 runs. This was Super Club’s fourth successive victory and they have assured themselves a berth in the knock-out stage of the tournament. |
