Shimla, July 1
The government would lay emphasis on the strengthening of agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry and fisheries sectors by making adequate provisions of additional internal and external funds for the expansion of their activities.

This was stated by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh while reviewing the progress of the Agriculture Department and HP Marketing Board here last evening. He said 10 lakh tonnes of seasonal vegetable production, valued at Rs 600 crore, has been targeted for the current financial year.

Mr Virbhadra Singh emphasised the need for the revival of departmental agriculture farms all over the state, which could be used as seed multiplication centres, demonstration and experimental farms to train the farming community, besides accruing income for the upkeep and meeting of the recurring expenditure of the farms. "The research being carried out by the agriculture and horticulture scientists needs to be delivered to the farming community who were the ultimate target groups to promote such activities," he said.

The Chief Minister said that Himachal Pradesh was second to Karnataka in producing maize. He said efforts were afoot to attract maize-based industries to the state which could produce value-added products of the maize so that farmers were also benefited from such ventures. The government had reduced the market fee from earlier 2 per cent to 1 per cent with a view to put less tax burden over the farming community. He said a vast network of agriculture markets had been created all over the state and modern marketing yards were coming up at Dhalli in Shimla, Solan, Parwanoo, Kangni (Mandi), Karsog, Chail-Chowk, Jogindernagar Bandrol, Nirmand, Khersu (Kullu) and Palampur and Dharamshala.

Growers unhappy with fall in price of tomatoes
Our Correspondent

Kumarhatti, July 1
The fall in the price of tomato during the past few days has drawn criticism from growers. The per kg wholesale prices have fallen from Rs 22 - 25 to Rs 13 -15, largely due to the Delhi Government fixing the price of tomato to Rs 20.

The prices were rising till the last week-end. The tomato growers of the Happy valley comprising three panchayats -- Top ki Bair, Deothi and Dangri -- were getting a price of over Rs 20 per kg till these came down.

The price started to slide down after the Delhi Government took steps to curb the high prices of vegetable.

The growers questioned that the prices of pulses and fuel were not being checked and only the prices of vegetables were being regulated.

They alleged that they do not get any help when vegetables prices fall very low.

More than 4,000 hectares of area in Solan district is under cultivation of off-season vegetables, out of which tomato is grown in about 2,000 hectares. Nearly 15,000 to 18,000 metric tonne of tomato production is recorded here annually.

Tomatoes from the Happy valley start to reach market from the first week of June. The majority of supply comes from Jaunaji, Oachaghat, Haripur, Jabbal Jamrot, Patta Brawari, Koro-Kainthali areas in Solan block, Sayari, Kanair and Sadhupal in Kandaghat block, Bawasani, Sanri, Bahal, Matuli, Chandar, Diggal, Janwal, Manlog Kalan and Basuala in Nalagarh block.

Rinpoche re-elected PM of Tibetan govt-in-exile
Tribune News Service

Dharamsala, July 1
Prof Samdhong Rinpoche was today re-elected Prime Minister (Kalon Tripa) of the Tibetan government-in-exile and chairman of the Kashag (cabinet) of the Central Tibetan Administration for the second consecutive term with a landslide majority.

He got 90.72 per cent votes and his rival candidate Juchen Thubten Namgyal could only get 9.28 per cent votes. Namgyal is also an ex-PM and a senior parliamentarian of the Tibetan government-in-exile.

Talking to The Tribune, Professor Rinpoche said, “I always felt that I have focused on long-term policies for the Tibetan community and this might make me less popular with the voters. So, I never expected this kind of response and it is truly overwhelming and humbling.”

The large percentage of votes, he said, was an indication of the fact that the Tibetan community approved of whatever he had done in the past five years, trying to implement the policies of the Dalai Lama.

“This second term will be even more challenging and I would like to take forward the dialogue initiated with the Chinese authorities to find a solution to the issue of Tibet. The annual meetings between the envoys of the Dalai Lama and the Chinese officials has led to confidence building and something concrete will surely come up, despite the obstacles,” he said.

He said the welfare of Tibetans living in different settlements in India and abroad and changes in the education policy for the Tibetan educational intuitions would be his other priorities.

Chief Election Commissioner Tashi Phuntsok declared the results of the elections. The final results were reported to the Dalai Lama by the commission yesterday.

There are a total of 72,771 registered Tibetan voters living in various settlements in different countries, of which 32,205 cast their votes in the elections and while 29,216 voted for Rinpoche, Juchen got 2,989 votes.

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 1
Things are beginning to look up for Lawrance School, Sanawar, yet again. The school management has appointed Mr Praveen K. Vasisht, an alumnus of this school and currently a teacher on campus, officiating in the top slot, as the new Headmaster with a brief to re-build the image of the school that once ranked among the very best in the country. During a short stint as officiating headmaster, the school results showed an upward trend this session, wherein after the management reposing confidence in his abilities asked him to take over command today.

Soon after taking charge, Mr Vasisht shared his vision for the school with The Tribune, emphasising the need to re-structure courses, rebuild confidence of the parents in the school and its management and build a better academic atmosphere. Mr Vasisht, 47, who has a vast experience in life that spreads from practicing law in the initial years of his life to being a Legal Adviser to the Ghana Government. Since, 1990 he has been teaching at Lawrance School.

Mr Vasisht was quite candid in his observations about what has happened at the school that in many ways directly impacted results, shook the faith and confidence of the students and their parents. “But that is the past, I can assure everyone that things will improve and next years results would be better than those this session”.

“My vision for Sanawar is to marry tradition with modernity. While we remain true to our core values we have to take giant strides in the field of information technology. We already have got in a lot of IT in school, to help it aid education here in classrooms and administrative work, I want to further speed it up and raise the bar. We want to be second to none amongst schools in India, and eventually the best in the world, he says blending his philosophy with his future plans.

Introspecting and reflection on his own beliefs, he said, “education is holistic to me. It’s a life long purpose. Much learning takes place outside classrooms, on playfields, during outdoor camp activities and hobby sessions. So while we strive for better grades in exams, my purpose remains to turn out well-rounded, confident, successful and good human beings who have happy memories of their childhood all their lives.”

In concrete terms he has already started specialised coaching for those wanting to join professional medical and engineering institutes after their schooling. He has announced an accelerated pace for the construction of the new science block. Compared to a year and a half ago when I started officiating as Headmaster, the academic and social environment in the school has perceptibly improved.

“I can deal with the situation”, he says, with confidence adding, “I myself studied here, so I know the difference between then and now”.

Mr Vasisht feels very lucky to have his wife as a colleague, she has been teaching English for the past 26 years. Incidentally, his only daughter is also studying in Class X at the same school. “With my family by my side, it gives me an opportunity to pay 100 per cent attention to work that besides administration also involves teaching history and civics”
