Jammu, July 1
Undettered by the controversy surrounding the Shiv lingam in the cave shrine, a record number of 1.55 lakh pilgrims have so far paid obeisance at Amarnath in the south Kashmir Himalayas since the commencement of the yatra on June 10.

As many as 1,55,390 pilgrims have so far had darshan of the ice lingum in Amarnath, a spokesman of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board said.

Besides, 13,000-15,000 pilgrims are on their way to the south Kashmir shrine for offering prayers.

There is no decrease in the number of pilgrims due to the man-made Shiv lingum constroversy and pilgrims are thronging the shrine in increased number.

In the first 16 days of the yatra this year, as many as 1,31,359 pilgrims visited the shrine, while only 89,127 had visited the shrine during the same period in 2005 and 97,069 in 2004.

A fresh batch of 887 pilgrims left Jammu today for onward journey to the Himalayan cave shrine.

Today’s batch, comprising 483 men, 177 women, 200 sadhus and 27 children, left from the base camp of M A M Stadium here between 5 am and 5.30 am, officials said.

The devotees left in a fleet of 38 vehicles under proper security arrangements, they said, adding the pilgrims had already crossed Batote by 10.30 am and were expected to reach their respective destinations at Phalgam and Baltal by evening. — PTI
