Heated debate over Mayor’s trip to Germany

Admn fails to hand over parking lot to MC
Chandigarh, June 30
Four years after a division bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the Chandigarh Administration to vacate the underground parking lot in front of the Estate Office, Sector 17 and hand it over to the Municipal Corporation to make it functional
, no effort has been made to comply with the orders. The parking lot had to be vacated in three months.

Tragedy waiting to happen
Chandigarh, June 30
As if electrocution of three buffaloes in Sector 43 two days ago is not warning enough, there are several open junction boxes and live wires across the city that are waiting for similar accidents to take place. The only difference is that this time it may be a child or even an adult human being.

‘Sick’ truth of Mohali Civil Hospital
Child with locket in throat turned away after long wait
Mohali, June 30
It took a brave father and the local MLA to lay bare the "sick" truth of Mohali Civil Hospital. The hospital doctors allegedly made a child who needed immediate medical attention first wait for over three hours without providing any help, only to ask him to "get out" later.

Notification to be issued soon

CM misleading public on PSIEC land: union
Chandigarh, June 30
Members of the Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation Union on the second day of their mass hunger strike alleged that the Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, was misleading the public regarding the status of the PSIEC land which was being given to Reliance.

Admn bans functions at Sukhna Lake

For the promotion of better habitat for migratory birds and to upgrade the overall ecology of the Sukhna Lake, the Chandigarh Administration today decided to ban practice of holding functions, ceremonies at the Sukhna Lake as it causes a lot of littering and sound pollution, which not only pollutes the Lake water but also disturbs the migratory birds.

Changes approved in Mohali, Zirakpur master plan

Punjab Regional Town Planning and Development Board yesterday approved the amendments in the outline master plan of Mohali and Zirakpur in accordance with the controlled area plan of periphery of Chandigarh.

Electricity Dept’s warning to cable operators

The Engineering Department today asked all cable operators to remove unauthorised TV cables from electricity poles in different parts of the city within three weeks to prevent any fatal accident in the event of a high-tension electricity cable coming in contact with that of the cable operators’.

‘Doctor’ kidnaps minor girl
Chandigarh, June 30
A case of kidnapping of a minor girl by a self-styled doctor and his alleged wife has come to light from Janata Colony in Sector 25, here. The doctor, his 'wife' along with the minor girl, employed by him for a nursing course, disappeared from the colony on Wednesday.

Ex-minister’s son, friends held for bid to kill cop
Mohali, June 30
The police has arrested Sukhjinder Singh, son of former PWD Minister Sucha Singh Langah, and his four friends for an attempt to murder. The five allegedly bashed and later tried to kill policemen who tried to stop a fight between the five.

Man found dead; woman ends life
Chandigarh, June 30
Two deaths were reported in the city today. A middle-aged man was found dead in his Sector 41 house under mysterious circumstances this afternoon while in another incident, a 20-year-old married woman allegedly hanged herself to death at her Darua village residence here this morning.

Man duped of Rs 53 lakh, 3 Zirakpur men booked
Chandigarh, June 30
The police booked three Zirakpur residents on the allegations of duping a city resident of Rs 53 lakh, which they had taken for a plot that was already sold. Sources in the Economic Offences Wing of the Chandigarh police said, Chatter Singh of Phase I, Industrial Area, lodged a complaint about four months ago.

Five hurt in group clash
Lalru, June 30
Five persons, including a Punjab Home Guards jawan, were injured in a group clash in Tofapur village, near here, today. According to the police, the clash took place in the wake of a property dispute in the village.

Admn flayed for delay in reducing VAT on 89 items
Chandigarh, June 30
Chandigarh Beopar Mandal has criticized the Chandigarh Administration for reducing VAT on 89 items five months late. This has resulted in financial loss to the traders. Mr K.S. Panchi and Mr J.P.S. Kalra, vice president and general secretary of the Beopar Mandal, said the decision to reduce the VAT should have been taken on January 25, 2006, the day when Punjab announced to reduce the tax.

Housing project launched
Chandigarh, June 30
Reliant Infrastructure today launched a Rs 100-crore mega housing project,World1, promising contemporary styling, imposing architecture and luxury living in Mohali. Mr Hamrit Singh Chawla, Director, Reliant Infrastructure, said here today that under the project, 400 luxury apartments would be constructed on a sprawling 10.5 acres in Mohali, on the Landran-Kharar road, near the upcoming Mohali Golf Club.

The Punjab circle of the BSNL today introduced a new promotional scheme for its prepaid customers. Under the scheme, the customers can get validity of 365 days and full talk time on recharge coupons of Rs 1,000 denomination activated from July 1, according to a press note issued here today.

A new divisional office of the Oriental Insurance Company will be opened at Mohali tomorrow. It will be inaugurated by the Chief Regional Manager of the company, Mr G.C. Gaylong. The new office will be headed by the Divisional Manager, Mr Rajesh Sharma.

The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr AD Gaud, remanded Rakesh alias Bobby, a suspect in the Naresh murder case to police remand till July 6, while Deepak, the main suspect in the Sapna murder case, was today sent to the judicial custody.

14-day custody for patwari

The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Panchkula, Mr A.D. Gaur, has remanded a patwari, who was arrested by the Haryana Vigilance Bureau (BV) while allegedly taking bribe yesterday, to judicial custody for 14 days here today.
