IT Dept losing crores courtesy shady land deals

The phenomenal boom in the real estate business does not mean much to the Income Tax Department. Because most of the mega deals running into crores of rupees are undervalued. This not only leads to huge losses to the state government but also to the Centre as the real estate dealers hardly pay any income tax.

Dowry victim fights for life
Ludhiana, June 30
Manpreet Kaur (24), a Bachelor in Technology, is struggling for life at the CMCH with 50 per cent burns even as her father is fighting to get her in-laws booked. She was allegedly burnt by her mother-in-law at Ghanga Kalan village in Ferozepore on June 19. Her in-laws allegedly did not inform her family. Her uncle got to know about the incident when he called her up.

The survival of Mohammed Ansari, a 25-year-old city resident, running a PCO in Jamalpur area, depends on the generosity of kind-hearted people of the region. Brought to Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) here on June 8, he was diagnosed to with renal failure and tuberculosis.

With poll coming, RSS hukamnama issue raises head
Ludhiana, June 30
The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Shiromani Akali Dal (B) are trying to play down a hukamnama issued by the Akal Takht Jathedar, Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, in 2004 against the Rashtriya Sikh Sangat, an offshoot of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Shiv Sena protests against rising prices
Ludhiana, June 30
The activists of the Shiv Sena yesterday staged a protest demonstration against the rising prices of essential commodities. They also burnt an effigy of the government. The activists gathered at the Durga Mata Temple and took out a procession. At the Mini Secretariat they submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.

BSNL staff stage dharna 
Ludhiana, June 30
In response to a call given by the central committee of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Employees Union, BSNL employees today staged a dharna and held a demonstration during lunch hour over the failure of the government to check increasing prices of essential commodities and petroleum products.

Rehman is PPCC minority cell chairman

Mr Atiq-u-Rehman Ludhianavi has been appointed as the chairman of the minority cell of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC). Mr Rehman belongs to a family of freedom fighters who preferred to stay back in India even after the Partition when thousands of Muslims left for Pakistan.

Mr Prayank Bharti, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development), asked banks in the district to liberally extend loans so as to attain the target fixed of Rs 4,439 crore under the Annual Credit Plan (ACP) 2006-07 at a meeting organised to review the progress of the ACP here yesterday.

Teachers hone skill at camps
Mandi Ahmedgarh, June 30

Hundreds of primary and upper primary teachers from Sangrur and Ludhiana districts have vowed to commit themselves to the Preparation for Learning Enhancement in Punjab (PLEP) at the elementary level, a whole quality improvement programme launched by the Education Department under the aegis of Sarav Sikhya Abhiyan.

NSS camps conclude
Ludhiana, June 30
Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women organised an NSS camp at Daad village here recently in which Mr Joginder Singh and Mr Goyal from Civil Defence office gave information on self-security, civil security and rural security. Many students participated in the camp with great enthusiasm.

Arya College students excel

Ludhiana, June 30
Students of BA-III year of Arya College have brought laurels to the institution. The overall pass percentage of the college is 100 per cent. Saloni Aggarwal obtained first position in the college by securing 76.8 per cent marks while Bindu Makhija stood second with 76.2 per cent marks. Monika Kapoor stood third securing 74.9 per cent marks.As many as 73 students were placed in first divisions and 28 students were placed in second divisions.

Punjabi producers need to change outlook: actors

Punjabi actors, including Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Rakesh Bedi, feel that Punjabi producers need to change their mindset if they want to make good Punjabi movies. They felt majority of Punjabis were reluctant to make regional movies and those who had made ones, lacked self-confidence.

Bollywood actors Rameshwari, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Rakesh Bedi today released the audio CD of Punjabi comedy “Main Tu Assi Tussi”. Producer of the film Rameshwari said though she came from Andhra Pradesh, she possessed great love for Punjab as she was married to a Punjabi.

Dr Joshi re-elected chief of Punjab Dental Council
Ludhiana, June 30
Dr J.L. Joshi, Principal, Christian Dental College here, has been re-elected president of Punjab Dental Council (PDC). The members of the council unanimously voted for him in a meeting held in Chandigarh on June 24. This is for the second time that he had taken over the presidentship of PDC.

The unlawful and improper marketing practices and propagation of infant food by the multinational corporations and other companies, came under sharp focus at the five day training programme in nutrition education which concluded here today. The programme - Training of Trainers (ToT) was conducted by the Food and Nutrition Board of Government of India and 25 participants from state government departments attended the training course.

150 examined at hernia check-up camp
Doraha, June 30
A free hernia check-up camp was organised at Sidhu Hospital. Dr Jagmohan Singh, Vice-President, Indian Medical Association Punjab, inaugurated the camp. A total of 150 patients were examined during the camp.
