Farmers harvest wheat crop with hands
Mahitpur (Ludhiana), April 4
Notwithstanding the total mechanisation of agriculture in the state, farmers of the district have reverted to the traditional practice of harvesting wheat manually to combat the shortage of wheat chaff. Around 30 per cent of the farmers in the district have already started harvesting operations while those who had sown the late varieties will begin harvesting after a couple of days.

Electricity poles and power transformer-supporting structures are a cause of traffic bottlenecks and accidents here. With underground wiring a distant cry and shifting of poles expensive, residents look towards the government for a solution.

Woman gets 5yr-RI in kidnap case
Ludhiana, April 4
Mr Hardial Singh, Presiding Officer of the Fast Track Court, has convicted Laxmi of Tajpur Road for kidnapping three-year-old Anita. She was sentenced to a rigorous imprisonment for five years.

SAD ‘indifferent’ to senior leaders’ woes
Mandi Ahmedgarh, April 4
The Shiromani Akali Dal has been accused of ignoring committed leaders and workers of the party having alliance with former Punjab Chief Minister Surjit Singh Barnala. The disappointed leaders alleged that senior leaders of the party had been too busy during the past years to observe the death anniversaries of the 13 persons.

Mayor urges councillors to sink differences

Mr Nahar Singh Gill, Mayor, Ludhiana Municipal Corporation and vice-chairman, All-India Council of Mayors, has called upon chiefs of civic bodies of the state to sink narrow political differences, while finalising developmental projects in their respective areas of jurisdiction.

PAU students’ union splits
Ludhiana, April 4
The Punjab Agricultural University Students’ Union has split with two groups, with each one claiming to be the real representatives. While the incumbent president Swaran Singh Boparai resigned from the post after he was rusticated from the university, the rival group appointed Gursher Singh Sandhu as the president.

Christian Dental College conducts seminar
Ludhiana, April 4
Christian Dental College conducted a continuing dental education programme for general dental practitioners and students and faculty of the college here today. According to Dr J.L. Joshi, Principal of CDC, more than 150 dental surgeons attended the seminar.

Dr J.L. Bassi, Professor and Head, Department of Orthopaedics at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital here was invited by the American Association of Orthopaedicians to attend an international conference at Chicago.

Cricket trials tomorrow
Ludhiana, April 4
Trials to select the Ludhiana cricket team (u-15 years) will begin at 8.30 am at the Arya College ground on April 6.
According to a spokesperson of the Ludhiana District Cricket Association, the selected probables will undergo training at the same venue prior to the final selection.
