BSF men celebrate Holi
Jammu, March 14 It was for the second time during the past two years that the BSF soldiers were able to celebrate Holi without restrictions. A senior BSF officer, Mr R.L. Wanchoo told mediapersons on the border post that “prior to the enforcement of the ceasefire our boys would celebrate the festival in a restrained manner.” He explained that prior to the ceasefire the troops across the border would fire between 30,000 and 40,000 rounds a day from the Sialkot sector. Another officer said at times “we would divide the soldiers in small groups allowing each group a chance to celebrate the festival in turns. And today the bulk of our boys are engaged in the celebrations.” The BSF jawans danced, played with colours and distributed sweets among civilians, who had come from the nearby villages to join the security forces in the celebrations. Mr Sewa Singh of R.S. Pora said “even in border villages we had to celebrate Holi and other festivals under the fear of being hit by bullets from across the border.” He said “since 2003 ceasefire we have been feeling relaxed and not only celebrating festivals but also carrying out farming practices freely.” Another BSF officer said “prior to the ceasefire 80 per cent of the total number of boys used to be deployed on border patrolling but now we keep not more than 20 per cent of our men for this duty.” He said “despite the lull we continue to maintain utmost vigil on the border.” |
