Shop gutted: A confectionery shop on north circular road here was gutted in the wee hours on Monday. Some passengers of a bus noticed smoke emanating from the shop. They informed the fire brigade but by the time the fire men controlled the fire, three-fourths of the stock inside was damaged. The loss is estimated to be over Rs 2 lakh.

AMRITSAR
CBI probe demanded: The BJP has demanded a CBI enquiry into alleged land grabbing by land mafia in collusion with politicians and bureaucrats. In a letter to Gen SF Rodrigues, Governor, the party alleged that a local Congress leader, Ms Ratna, a former chairperson of the Improvement Trust, confessed that she was removed from the post as she had refused to bow under pressure to withdraw 32 acres of land from the new Amritsar scheme.

Four injured:
Four persons were injured when their car (PB 18 H 9594) turned turtle near the octroi post on the Jalandhar road on Monday following a tyre burst. The injured are Rajbir Singh, Sarabjit Singh, Tinku Handa and Vikas, all residents of Fatehgarh Churian.

NAWANSHAHR
Poet living in penury: Amar Chand Parwana, a poet and resident of Kahma, who had been performing on AIR and Doordarshan for 25 years, is living in penury. He had written and recited about 300 poems and songs on social issues. He has written letters to the President, Prime Minister and the Chief Minister to grant him old-age pension.

Foundation stone
: The INLD district chief and former minister, Mr Jagdish Yadav, has flayed the authorities concerned for the removal of the foundation stone of the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Hussainpur, near here, which was laid by the former chief minister and INLD supremo, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, on January 2, 2004. However, Mr S.K. Bhutani, Executive Engineer, HUDA, has said that the foundation stone would now been installed at a place inside the DIET building.
