Robbers strike at PSEB office
Jalandhar, March 11 A gang of four robbers (some say they were about twelve in number) forced its entry into the PSEB office at Badshahpur village on the Nakodar road around 2 a.m today. They thrashed and tied chowkidar Srinivas with a rope. Then they took away the safe and used a parked “rehri” of a tea stall owner to transport the safe. The “rehri” used in the crime was recovered by the police later from a point near the crime scene. As soon as the information about this somewhat unusual robbery reached the police headquarters, Mr Bachan Singh Randhawa, (SP-2) arrived on the spot and started the investigation. The police officials believe that the robbers could have taken away the safe on some heavy vehicle like a tractor-trolley. Finger print experts and a dog squad were also pressed into the service. No arrest was made till late in the evening, sources said. |
Colleges to offer new professional courses
Jalandhar, March 11 Most of the local colleges have responded well, as almost each one of them has applied for at least eight to ten courses. This is likely to give students a wide choice to decide about the course they want to opt for. Besides various sections in the science stream that include tissue culture, bio-informatics biotechnology and microbiology, there are a lot many courses in commerce, too, such as air travel services, event management, financial services, insurance and international business. In IT field also, the students would have various options like graphics, animation and web designing. Even as the university authorities are learnt to have doubled the amount of fee for applying for new courses from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 per course, the colleges do not seem to have shown even the slightest hesitation probably with an aim to lure fresh students. The DAV College authorities have applied for nine new courses, including seven postgraduate diplomas. The one-year diploma courses are those in “Air Travel Services”, “Advertisement and Event Management”, “Fashion Designing”, “Web Designing”, “Graphics and Animation”, “Financial Services, Banking and Insurance”, and “International Business”. The college has also decided to introduce Microbiology and Bio-informatics as two elective subjects in B.Sc. Mr M.L. Aeri, Principal, said he had asked for these courses keeping in mind the latest demand of the industry and job opportunities available for the students. Similarly, the authorities of Lyallpur Khalsa College have also applied for many new courses, including M.Sc in Chemistry, M.Sc in Biotechnology and B.Sc (Bio-informatics). Dr Satish Kapoor, Principal, said the college had spent nearly Rs 40 lakh for setting up its bio-technology laboratory. Dr R.P. Bhardwaj, Principal of Doaba College, also added that he was planning to introduce post-graduation in Biotechnology, B.Sc in Bio-informatics, and many new diploma courses. |
Need for rationalisation of labour laws,
Jalandhar, March 11 Addressing the participants, Justice K.S. Garewal, Judge, Punjab and Haryana High Court, underlined the need for rationalisation of labour laws. He discussed the negative and positive aspects of globalisation. The public authority should be strict while implementing various labour laws to harmonise relationship between workers and employees, Justice Garewal said. In his keynote address, Professor Veer Singh, Dean, University Instructions, Panjab University, highlighted the need to have harmonious relationship between workers and management to achieve the required perfection in the domestic industry to compete with industries of developed nations like Japan. Professor Gurnam Singh, Dean, Academic Affairs, Guru Nanak Dev University, remarked that there must be a mechanism to protect labour class and to face challenges due to liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation programme and WTO. He also laid stress on finding out measures to save agricultural sector. On the occasion, Justice Garewal released a book titled “Indian Constitution and weaker sections” edited by Dr S.C. Sharma, Head of the School of Legal Studies, and published by Guru Nanak Dev University. Welcoming the dignitaries earlier, Dr Sharma highlighted the need to reconsider the existing labour laws to find out solutions. Faculty from various colleges and universities of the region, lawyers, trade union leaders and officials from the Labour Department attended the seminar. |

Kapurthala, March 11 The agitated people also raised slogans against the alleged anti-worker approach of Mr Yash Pal Gupta, General Manager, RCF. They had staged a “jaago rally” on the RCF premises yesterday evening. |

Phagwara, March 11 They, after some time, started complaining of vomiting, diarrhoea and fever. They were later admitted to the Civil Hospital here. As per reports, doctors said that they were out of danger now. |

Phagwara, March 11 The police, on a tip-off, laid a naka near the Panchchat village. The police signalled the driver of a Tata Sierra vehicle to stop. The driver, identified as Rajiv Kumar from Hoshiarpur, tried to flee, but was overpowered by the policemen.
