GK test in memory of Kalpana Chawla

Ludhiana, February 15
The Postgraduate Department of Commerce, SCD Govt College, here organised a general knowledge test in memory of astronaut Kalpana Chawla with the support of “Youth for Nation” organisation. 177 students of B.Com, B.Sc, M.Com and MA (Geography) appeared in the test.

Rahul Jain, a student of B.Sc Part I, got the second position from 18 colleges of Ludhiana district. He will get a merit certificate and cash prize of Rs 2000.

Anmol Sharma and Raman Jeet got second position in the college and Sahil Aggarwal of B.Com III got third position in the college. The principal of the college D. S. Gill congratulated the students for their achievements, efforts and excellent performance.

Examination: Certificate 'B' examination for the senior wing NCC girl cadets of 10 colleges — Government college for Women, GNG College, MTSM College, SDP College, Ramgarhia Girls College, Khalsa College for Women, Mai Bhago Ramgarh College, SGGJ Girls College Raikot, GHG Khalsa college, Gurusar Sudhar and GNN College Doraha— was held at Government College for Women here recently.

The syllabus of B certificate examination comprises map reading, communication, health and hygiene, leadership, adventure activities, civil defence, field craft, battle craft etc. Thereafter, the cadets are tested in subjects like drill, weapon training and map reading. Extra coaching classes/guidance had been given at the unit location last month.

The commanding officer of 3 Punjab Girls Bn NCC thanked the Principal, Ms Parabhjot Kaur, and their associate NCC officer, Capt Ms Narinderjit Kaur, for extending support for the conduct of the examination.

Expressions-2006: Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT), Gujarkhan will organise a two-day inter-college Management-techno fest ‘Expressions-2006’ here on February 17-18.

Participants from 50 management and engineering colleges from Punjab and nearby states have been invited to compete in as many as 24 cultural, literary, Fine Arts and technical events.

On the opening day, the participants will compete in cultural, literary and fine arts events, namely Rangoli, collage-making, sketching, flower arrangement, skit, Indian songs, extempore, case discussion, elocution, choreography and Western group dance.

Technical events like computer quiz, debugging, software development, logic design, paper presentation and the national level seminar on ‘Software innovations in IT industry’ will also be held on the first-day. On February 18, competitions in bhangra, giddha, poster-making, quiz, debate, case presentation, cartooning, sell-it, mehndi and fashion show will be held.

This inter-college extravaganza is a joint venture of the GNIMT students under the guidance of the faculty and support of over 80 business houses. Dr M. S. Grewal, Registrar, PTU will inaugurate the function.

Sapling plantation: Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle, Public Relation Directorate, arranged tree plantation and dental care camp at Government College for Women here today. The team of expert doctors including Dr Kamaljit Singh Sehdev and Dr Japneet Kaur were invited to make students aware about dental hygiene. They stressed that because of a lack of awareness, permanent damage could be caused to the teeth.

Mr Avtar Singh Narula, president, Consumer Forum, was the chief guest of the function. The tree plantation ceremony was conducted by Mr Narinderpal Singh, SSP. During the function, message regarding trees and their role in the life of the common man were conveyed.

Cultural programme: Arya College here organised Virsa-2006, a cultural programme on Wednesday for the propagation of Punjabi culture and to acquaint students with the rich cultural heritage of Punjab. Manmohan Waris, a noted Punjabi singer enthralled the audience with Punjabi songs. Before Waris, Sudesh Lehri, a Punjabi anchor regaled the audience with his perfect mimickery of singing styles of various Punjabi singers.

The management, staff and students honoured these artists with shawls and mementos. On the occasion, veteran Punjabi poet Inderjit Hassanpuri was also honoured. Dr S.M. Sharma, the principal of the college welcomed the guests. Mr Vijay Sathi, president of the college managing committee was the chief guest.

Convocation: As many as 248 graduates were conferred degrees by the Vice-Chancellor of the Panjab University, Dr K. N. Pathak, at the convocation function held at AS College for Women here on Wednesday.

In his address, he congratulated the students for excelling in studies and stressed upon them to get higher education. Earlier, he was given a hearty welcome by the management committee president Yoginder Sharma and other members along with college principal Dr Rekha Bhardwaj.

Mr Shamsher Singh Dullo, President PPCC (I), gave away prizes to the students who excelled in studies and other extra-curricular activities held at zonal, state and inter-university levels.

Government schools’ standard to be raised: Johar

Mr Harnam Dass Johar, Education Minister, Punjab here today said that to remove the shortcomings of all Senior Secondary, Secondary, High, Middle and Primary schools, a special survey had been conducted. It was found that some schools needed classrooms, playgrounds, science laboratories and these schools have been given adequate funds.

Mr Johar was the chief guest at the annual prize distribution function of Shaeed-e-Azam Govt Girls Senior Secondary School Bharat Nagar Chowk here. He presented a cheque of Rs 60 lakh to the principal, Ms Kamaljeet Kaur, for the development of the school .

Mr Johar said the government has made a scheme to raise the education standard at all levels in government schools of the state and wanted students to be provided a good basic foundation. Under this scheme, 12,000 teachers would be recruited shortly. He said there would soon be computer education in govt schools so that the govt school students could compete with private school students.

He said to end female foeticide, a special campaign, involving teachers and parents and students, would be started. He said an educated girl could manage the family well.

Students of the school presented a gala cultural programme, comprising gidda, choreography, skits etc. Mr Johar awarded the students who had excelled in academics, sports, NCC and cultural events.

VC releases book dedicated to scientists

Vice-Chancellor, K.S. Aulakh yesterday released “Gyan-Vigyan — Jyot”, a book in Punjabi. It is a collection of essays by a cross-section of scientists and technologists presented at a training workshop on “Effective use of mass media for dissemination of science and technology”, conducted jointly by the Directorate of Extension and Punjab State Council for Science and Technology here in December — January 2005.

The book is the third in a series brought out by PAU’s Centre for Communication, Languages and Culture at the conclusion of training workshops. The two earlier publications in Punjabi were also based on deliberations and papers presented at similar workshops where effective role of print and electronic media in making people aware of scientific and technological developments. Those two books were ‘Gyan-Vigyan — Chetna’ (2002) and ‘Gyan-Vigyan — Prakash’ (2004).

The Director of Extension Education, Dr S.S. Gill, who is the spirit behind this project and helped to compile and edit the set of three books said, “The purpose of publishing these in simple Punjabi in story-telling and conversational style is to cover a large segment of students and spread the reach and import of science and technology through the media”.

Dr Aulakh in his remarks impressed upon the scientists that they must use the same idioms and expressions that people use and understand while describing to them their research works and achievements.

Taken together the set of these three books encompass a wide spectrum of topics written by resource persons dealing with science, technology, agriculture, agricultural engineering, nature, economics, geography, climate and weather, home science, child development, home life, human problems, veterinary and animal science etc.

The book in hand, ‘Gyan-Vigyan — Jyot’, is dedicated to those scientists who are enabling mankind to take life from darkness to light and enlightenment through their own dedication and commitment to transform the human thought and life, adding quality to it.

Cultural show by PAU society

The Society for the Advancement of Academics, Sports and Cultural Activities (SASCA) of the College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, Punjab Agricultural University, organised a cultural programme Jash-e-Baharan in the Pal auditorium of the university recently. The programme was part of the annual day function to felicitate the students who excelled in academics, sports and cultural activities.

The event started by the lighting of the lamp by the chief guest Dr S.S. Johl, Vice-Chairman, Punjab State Planning Board. Dr B.S. Dhillon, Director, Research, PAU, presided over the function. Former Deans of the College — Dr Kulbir Singh, Dr H.S. Garcha, Dr D.R. Singh and Dr M.A. Zahir — were also present on the occasion.

Dr Johl presented three Best Student Gold Medal to Ms Maryada Sharma (microbiology), Ms Harman Deep Kaur (biochemistry and chemistry) and Ms Jyotsana Attri (communication, languages & culture) for their excellence in academics, sports and co-curricular activities, respectively.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Johl said participation in co-curricular activities was vital for the overall development of the personality of a person. “Music is necessary to break the monotony of silence but we are failing to distinguish between music and noise. We must discard loud noise, which is fed into our ears as modern trend,” he commented. He applauded the efforts of the students for presenting a good cultural programme. He also gave Rs 5000 to SASCA for the promotion of cultural activities.

Dr Tejwant Singh, Dean, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities and chairman of the Society, informed that every year SASCA honours students for their achievements in academics, sports and co-curricular activities, and this year more than 40 students had been chosen for felicitation.

The function concluded with the chief guest giving away the awards and medals. The awardees were:

Workshop on nutrition

Ludhiana, February 15
To direct the interest of new generation towards the age-old art of preserving food in the form of pickles, chutneys, jams, “murrabbas” etc, a five-day workshop began at the Devki Devi Jain Memorial College for Women yesterday. The Home Science Department of the college organised the workshop for BA (final) students.

The five-day certificate programme will enable students to start their own vocation. Some nutritious recipes will also be taught in the workshop.

Mr Anant Ram and Mr Malkit Singh from the Food and Nutrition Board, Department of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Human Resource Development, gave the demonstration to the students. The students took great interest in the programme on the first day of the workshop.

Quiz contest: The National College for Women, Machhiwara, conducted a quiz competition and Antakashri contest in the college here recently. Six teams participated in the contest. Prof Vibha Jain was the quiz master. The team consisting of Paramjit Kaur, Pawandeep Kaur and Sunita Kundra stood first and team consisting Ms Megha Takyar, Janeet Kaur and Ramandeep Kaur stood second.

Dr K K Goel, principal of the college, and Ms Rekha Vadhera, director, addressed the students and encouraged them to come forward to participate in such contests in future. Dr Goel and Ms Vadhera gave away the prizes to the winners.

Farewell party at BVM School

A farewell party was organised for the students of class XII by Bhartiya Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Udham Singh Nagar, in the school premises today. A variety entertainment programme was organised by the students of class XI.

Students were also awarded the “Best Student Award” in different categories like behaviour, 100 per cent attendance etc. Sahil Gupta and Anika Malik were adjudged 'Best Boy' and 'Best Girl' in Science group respectively. Ajay Dhingra and Rinkle Gupta were adjudged 'Best Boy' and 'Best Girl' in Commerce group respectively.

A ‘havan’ was performed for the students of VIII, X and XII classes. Principal Sunil Arora encouraged them to work hard with full devotion to get success in every sphere of life.

City artist presents portrait to President

“I like this young man's efforts. Take down his address as I would like to call him later,” said President Dr A. P. J. Kalam when he received his pencil-sketch portrait presented by Vijay Momi, a young man from the city.

Talking to Ludhiana Tribune, Vijay Momi said, “I presented the portrait to him on February 6 at Rashtrapati Bhavan. His acceptance of my painting and words of appreciation made me the happiest person on the world. I received this official photograph showing the President accepting my painting yesterday.”

Vijay said that the President was surprised to see an Indian and a Pakistani flag painted on a sesame seed. “It took me one week to do the two flags,” he added.

Earlier, Vijay had painted Maharaja Ranjit Singh on a green cardamom and painted ‘shalokas’ on a grain of rice and presented them to politicians like Parkash Singh Badal.

Vijay said, “I have never formally learnt painting but my elder brother Yash Momi has been my mentor and guide. I won a gold medal for my landscape from Punjab Government in the year 2002 in Surtaal held in Mahendra College, Patiala.”

Asked about his future plans, he said, “I have received an invitation from one Mr Monty Singh of the UK. He has assured me that after forming a committee of five members, he will invite me there during summers. I want to hold an exhibition in the UK as I do not feel that my paintings will find many buyers in India.”

Rabies vaccination camp

Mr Jagmohan Singh Kang, Minister for Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Dairy Development, today while addressing a press conference at Civil Veterinary hospital during a anti-rabies vaccination and awareness camp, here said that he took a serious view of the sub-standard manufacture of food for dairy animals. He said that the dairy department had registered 200 cases against the manufacturers.

He also said that the government has decided to supply best quality feed, semen and cent per cent vaccination for foot and mouth disease.

While addressing the public, he ensured that all the vacant posts will be filled in the shortest possible time so that the public can get quality services.

This anti-rabies vaccination and awareness camp was inaugurated by Mr Rakesh Pandey, Minister for Science, Technology and Industrial Training. Mr Pandey, while talking to media persons, said that the government is collaborating with international institutions so that students who graduate here can be absorbed abroad. In this camp, more than 300 dogs were vaccinated against rabies.
