30 counters set up for riot victims

The district administration here has set up 30 special counters for riot victims to submit their claims for relief. Stating this here today, Mr Anurag Verma, Deputy Commissioner, said the counters would start functioning from tomorrow.

Wg Cdr attacked by robbers

In Haryana, a gang of robbers struck on Mullanpur-Raikot Road last night. They targeted a Wing Commander of Air Force at Halwara base, who was waylaid and robbed of Rs 4,500 and a mobile.

The Valentine’s Day began on a tragic note for the students of Punjab Agricultural University as a student of M.Sc. reportedly hanged himself to death from a ceiling fan in hostel number 7.

Cops yet to nab errant truck driver
Ludhiana, February 14
In yet another case of hit and run, an overspeeding truck hit a motor cycle leading to the death of one of the pillion riders on the Chandigarh road here. The police has so far not been able to trace the driver of the truck.

IT can be deposited in any bank
Ludhiana, February 14
All tax-payers have the right to deposit their income tax and other taxes in any of the designated and authorised branches of banks. According to Mr Ashok Juneja, president, Taxation Bar Association, and Mr Anup Jain former president of the Direct Tax Bar Association, this was stated by top officials of all leading banks.

Inquiry into under-weight milk packets
Ludhiana, February 14
Taking serious note of reports about the supply of less quantity of milk in packets of the Ludhiana Milk Plant, Mr Anurag Verma, Deputy Commissioner, has ordered a magisterial inquiry by Mr J.K. Jain, Executive Magistrate, Ludhiana.

SAD burns CM’s effigy
Ludhiana, February 14
Activists of the Shiromani Akali Dal today burned the effigy of Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh to protest against inflation in his tenure. Led by Mr Jaspal Singh Dhall, the protestors said that prices of all items had skyrocketed in the Congress government’s regime.

Development project approved
Mandi Ahmedgarh, February 14
The local Municipal Council has approved a slum development project that will undertake the construction of streets and drains at a cost of Rs 15 lakh. Mr Jatinder Kumar Bhola, president of the council, said an amount of Rs 15 lakh had been earmarked for the development of slums in the town.

Camps for disabled postponed
Ludhiana, February 14
Mr Priyank Bharti, additional Deputy Commissioner (Development), informed yesterday that the camps to be held to identify disabled children have been postponed till March.

Missing youth untraced
Ludhiana, February 14
A 21-year-old youth, Munish Sharma, a resident of Phase-II, Urban Estate, Dugri, is missing since February 9. According to family members, Munish Sharma left his house at around 11 a.m. on that day for a hair- cut.

Auto parts makers flay power hike proposal
Ludhiana, February 14
The Auto Parts Manufacturers Association today condemned the proposal by the Punjab State Electricity Board to increase power tariff by 17.6 per cent so as to cover a revenue gap of Rs 1,383 crore.

10-year RI for raping infant
Ludhiana, February 14
A man accused of raping an infant has been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 10 years. The accused, Sanjay Yadav of Gahour village, has also been fined Rs 3000. The orders were pronounced by Mr Hardial Singh, presiding officer of the fast-track court, Ludhiana.

500 examined at dental checkup camp

More than 500 persons were examined at a free dental check up camp organised by Hargobindpur and local units of the Bharat Vikas Parishad at Aryan Dental Hospital here.

Sports festival at Gill ends
Ludhiana, February 14
The Dashmesh Academy beat Harjit Friends Club of Moga 32-27 to win the Mata Gujri Gold Cup in kabaddi (all open) at the annual sports festival organised by the Golden Youth Club at Gill village near here, on Monday.
