Seminar
: The District Employment Office organised a seminar on various career options at Government Senior Secondary School, Nehru Garden, on Thursday. Ms Neelam Mahey, District Employment Officer, talked about various openings in different fields. Lieutenant-Colonel Manmohan Singh, Deputy Sainik Welfare Officer, Mr Dalbir Singh Saini, and District Education Officer, were present on the occasion.

Demand: The state government has demanded an enhancement in the grant for the Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme (ARWSP) from existing Rs 40 crore to Rs 100 crore, the Minister for Food Civil Supplies and Public Health, Mr Avtar Henry, said on Thursday. He said the government had also demanded more funds for providing sanitation facilities to people belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL).

Project: The work on the construction of the Damoriya Bridge would be finished by the end of June, the Municipal Commissioner, Mr Satwant Singh Johal, has said. The work on the bridge would be completed at a cost of Rs 26.11 crore. He also informed that the approval for the rail over-bridge over the Maksudan and the DAV railway crossings had been given by the Ministry of Railways. The bridges would be constructed at a cost of Rs 33.68 crore, he added.

Demonstration
: Members of the United Forum of Bank Union on Friday held a demonstration in front of the GT Road branch of the State Bank of Patiala in support of their demands. Addressing the protesters, Mr SP Malh, secretary, Punjab Bank Employees Federation, and Central Committee member, Mr Narinder Singh, demanded that the employees should be allowed to opt for pension and there should be a provision of job on compassionate grounds.

Suwidha Camp: The twelfth Suwidha Camp of Kapurthala district would be held in Government High School, Khajurala village, on February 16, said a press release.

Life term for killer
: The Sessions Judge, Mr R.C. Bansal, has sentenced Arjun (45), a resident of Asalwas village near here, to undergo imprisonment for life, holding him guilty of the murder of Mahender (38) of the same village. Besides he has imposed a fine of Rs 3000 on the convict, in default of the payment of which he will have to further undergo rigorous imprisonment for six months.

Dowry case
: The police on Friday claimed that it had arrested Bhupinder and his mother Mahtabo of Rajlu Garhi village in connection with a dowry harassment case registered against them on the complaint of Mrs Satyawati of Malviya Nagar. According to a report, the complainant has pointed out that her husband Bhupinder was pressurising her to bring a motor cycle. When she declined she was harassed.

Killed: Sham Lal, a resident of Shanti Colony, Murthal, was killed when he was hit by a Canter on the Sonepat-Murthal road near here on Friday. According to a report, the police has registered a case against the Canter driver who fled the accident site.

Licence cancelled: Mr G.D. Godara, District Food and Supplies Controller, has cancelled the licence of a ration depot at Malha Majra village in the district for irregularities in the distribution of rationed commodities. According to a report, the action follows public complaints.
