Centre tells state to share paddy loss
Chandigarh, February 10
Though the Union Government gave relaxation in the specifications for the procurement of paddy in Punjab in October last year, it is now telling the state government to share at least 50 per cent of the financial loss to be suffered on this count.

15 villages to be heritage sites

Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh here today announced that the state government would develop 15 villages related to martyrs, religious leaders and poets as heritage sites.

Stage set for heritage fest
Patiala, February 10
The stage is set for the much-awaited fourth Patiala Heritage Festival to unfold here from tomorrow. The curtain for the cultural extravaganza would be raised by the Haryana Chief Minster, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, from the precincts of Qila Mubarak, during the inauguration ceremony at 6 p.m. tomorrow.

Marriage certificates for a song
Hoshiarpur, February 10
Marriage certificates are reportedly easily available at the office of the Marriage Registrar here. A certificate can be obtained even if the groom and the bride concerned are not physically present in the office. These certificates are allegedly available at “throwaway prices”.

CPM workers stage protest

The members of CPM yesterday staged a protest in front of the Mini Secretariat against privatisation and neglect of farmers in the state here yesterday. The protesters raised slogans against the state and Central governments and maintained that the government had failed to redress the grievance of the employees, farmers and the poor.

Health Dept distributing expired chlorine

The Health Department is allegedly distributing expired water-purifying chlorine tablets. The matter came to light when employees of the department distributed these tablets on Majitha road recently following complaints of diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases .

Mrs Mohinder Kaur, sister of Mr Tarlochan Singh, outgoing Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities, died in Patiala yesterday. She was 67.

Trust to spend Rs 24 cr on fort restoration

“The Nabha Foundation Trust will spend Rs 24 crore on the restoration and renovation of Nabha Fort.” This is stated by Mr Randip Singh, MLA, Nabha, while talking to this correspondent at his residence.

Lawyers under the banner of the local Bar Association today proceeded on an indefinite strike in protest against the alleged illegal detainment of two advocates by the police after it registered a case in connection with an objectionable SMS on a religious personality.

In a bizarre incident, Nishan Singh Nihang of Amritsar yesterday stabbed his pregnant sister Narender Kaur alias Nindi (34) near Jalloki village in Sriganganagar, official sources said today.

Wanted criminal held
Abohar, February 10
Jagdish Bishnoi, wanted in connection with a robbery committed in Naya Bazaar, Delhi, on June 30, has been nabbed from his residence at Rawla, police control room at Sriganganagar, 40 km from here, said today.

Immolation bid by villager

Surinder Mehta of Chuni village in the district tried to immolate himself by sprinkling kerosene in his village this afternoon. When he was about to set himself afire, a constable, who was on duty, foiled his attempt.
