Martyrs of Rezangla battle remembered
Rewari, November 18 The battle of Rezangla was fought between the Charlie company of the 13th Kumaon Regiment and the Chinese army at the Rezangla post at the height of 16420 ft in the Chushul sector of Ladakh on November 18, 1962. Nearly 1,300 Chinese soldiers were killed while India sacrificed 114 soldiers which included the company commander Major Shaitan Singh, and two Junior Commissioned Officers. Out of 114 martyrs, 111 were Ahirs, mostly from Haryana. The celebrations commenced with the laying of wreaths at the Rezangla war memorial near the Dharuhera chowk here by Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Lt-Gen Amrik Singh Bhaiya, Colonel of the Kumaon and Naga Regiment, Irrigation and Revenue minister Ajay Singh Yadav and a host of others. Floral tributes were also paid by the Chief Minister and others at another war memorial near the Pragati chowk here. Later in his keynote address at the Rezangla Shauriya Divas Samaroh held in the KLP college complex here, Hooda, who was the chief guest of the function, said the battle of Rezangla, in which the jawans fought to the proverbial “last man last round”, was unparalleled in the annals of war not only in India but in the world as well. In response to a demand raised by the samiti brass, Mr Hooda announced that a war museum would be constructed at Rewari. Simultaneously complimenting the samiti for organising such a function, the Chief Minister also announced a financial assistance of Rs 1.51 lakh for the Rezangla trust. Prior to this Lt-Gen Amrik Singh Bhaiya paid tributes to the Rezangla heroes while giving a graphic account of this epic battle which, he asserted, had no parallel in the war chronicles of the world. He said the company Commander, Major Shaitan Singh, was posthumously decorated with the country’s highest gallantry award, Param Vir Chakra, whereas four other jawans were given Sena Medals for their exceptional bravery and devotion to duty. He said they all preferred to die fighting than surrender even an inch of land. He also presented the Rezangla trust a cheque for Rs 1 lakh on behalf of the Army headquarters. As many as 103 war widows and other dependants of the war heroes from various parts of Haryana and Rajasthan were also honoured by the Chief Minister and Lt. Gen. A.S. Bhaiya on this occasion. Besides, Miss Arti Singh, won a gold medal in the Asian Games recently, was also honoured by the Chief Minister. |
