Special prayers mark birth anniversary of Guru Nanak
New Delhi, November 15 Gurdwaras decorated with flowers, flags and posters depicting various aspects of Sikhism were holding congregations with special prayers, kirtan or musical recitation of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib, and katha or religious lectures as part of the day-long celebrations here. Forty-eight-hour continuous readings from the beginning to the end of the Sikh holy scriptures ended at almost every gurdwara early morning in traditional ceremonies marking the event. Led by the Panj Pyaras, representing the armed guard instituted by the tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, festive processions called Prabhat Pheris moved around the localities early morning across Delhi in honour of the Guru. At Gurdwara Rakab Ganj, the programme began with recitation of the Sukhmani Sahib and the Nitnem. Asa di Var and Shabad Kirtan were performed by Bhai Sarbjeet Singh Durg Wale and Gianai Jaswant Singh Parwana presented the historical background on Guru Nanak Dev ji. President of the DSGMC, Paramjit Singh Sarna and General Secretary, Ravinder Kumar extended greetings to the whole community on this occasion. They also urged people to attend the Nagar Kirtan at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib on the 27th of this month, which is proceeding to Nankana Sahib in Pakistan with a palki sahib of pure gold. Born in 1469, Guru Nanak denounced the caste system and taught that everyone is equal, regardless of caste, gender or religion. |
JNU students decry ‘handful of miscreants’
New Delhi, November 15 “These people who talk of affording a place to opinions of various kinds and eulogise democracy and the freedom to speak, acted contrary to what they verbalise. Having raised their point, they should have let the Prime Minister speak. They continued to create a racket even as the Prime Minister tried to address them,” said a group of students from the School of International Studies. These students who are in favour of “penalising those responsible” said, “It is not for the first time that an Indian leader has been embarrassed on campus. Forget about what had happened in the 70s or the 80s, this year beginning with President Kalam and Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder S Hooda, this is the third such attempt.” Students’ union too has expressed its objection, “We had decided that no such incident will take place. The president of the union who is also the leader of these handful of agitators is missing. But we want to clarify that the JNUSU condemns the incident,” said Vice-President Dhanajay. Drawing a comparison between yesterday’s incident that left the university community shamefaced and the reception that was extended to Hugo Chavez, the President of Venezuela in March this year, NSUI activists said, “We are tolerant when they invite the Venezuelan Premier, but when it is our own PM, they wave black flags. This is unacceptable. Tolerance has to be reciprocated.” Chavez was greeted by a standing ovation. Taking an extreme view, a senior faculty member even went to the extent of saying, “If this continues…dignitaries will decline invitations to JNU and the tradition of debate, discussions and deliberations will become history.” With the Vice-Chancellor having ordered an inquiry and assured to take action against the guilty. The university community is now waiting for the report to be submitted by the internal inquiry committee. |
Lack of clear policy leading to revenue loss
Faridabad, November 15 It is learnt that though the State Transport Department had launched a drive recently to check the violations and increase the revenue, it had resulted in a near ‘chaos’, and acute corruption involving the various agencies due to the absence of well-defined policy. It may be recalled that the Apex court had recently objected to allowing the passage of overloaded trucks on payment of penalty. Though the Transport Department do challan the overloaded commercial vehicles, much of it goes into the private pockets. Faridabad is the largest industrial and commercial centre in the state and hundreds of trucks and other vehicles pass from here daily and a large number of them are found overloaded or violating some norms or the other, said a source in the department concerned. Claiming that if all the sources of illegal income and corruption were plugged, the state government would be richer by several crores each year. It may be recalled that the State Transport Department had launched a special campaign to detect such violations and to increase the revenue from such violations. It is stated that this drive, which lasted for just a month, had been able to recover an additional amount of about Rs 50 lakh from the illegal movement and overloading of vehicles. The drive had been launched in Yamunanagar also where it is reported that the recovery was around Rs 30 lakh. It is claimed that if the government do not come out with a strict policy soon, the violations would not only increase but would continue to deprive the government of huge share of
revenue. |

Sitting in jail, Sirohi makes Rs 10 lakh extortion demand
Ghaziabad, November 15 The trader had been advised to “see Jatan in Bulandshahr jail”. The police, on learning of this threat, provided security to the panicked trader. According to the SP City, electronic surveillance of the trader’s mobile had been ordered. The SP City confirmed Gopal Singal had indeed received this message and threat. Singal manages an electronic parts business. The SP City said two days ago the trader had received a phone call from the criminal, asking him to cough up Rs10 lakh as extortion money. The caller said Jatan Sirohi had asked for the amount and he should keep it ready. The trader was stunned on receiving the message. He got in touch with the Ghaziabad police. Though the police tried tracing the number through electronic surveillance, the criminals were also very smart. The police have now enhanced the security being provided to Singal. Jatan Sirohi had made a similar demand for extortion money from a steel trader of Mahanagar though the trader had not disclosed his name. In view of the indifferent attitude of the police the criminals have started using their own network from inside the jail also for such nefarious works, ringing alarm bells in business circles. |
Appointment to legal panel mired in controversy
Gurgaon, November 15 The government has recently appointed 30 advocates for Gurgaon district in the various departments including HUDA, Marketing Committee, Haryana Financial Corporation (HFC), HSIDC, Daskhin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN), Corporative Bank, Hafed, Haryana Ware House, Haryana Agro, Haryana Pollution Control Board, etc. The appointments on the legal panel have allegedly been done on the basis of nepotism and ulterior motives, said a senior advocate Ashok Verma. Some of the advocates on the panel have no experience in the particular field where they have been appointed. Some have to come from nearby districts to defend the departments. This would go against the interests of the departments as they might loose the cases, observed advocate Verma. Mr Verma was surprised to find the name of a person in the panel, who is not even qualified for practising. Advocate Arun Sharma, who was the general secretary of the Haryana Vikas Party, which merged with the Congress, said the Congress party did not keep its words. |
Barakhamba-Indraprastha segment: DMRC may miss deadline
New Delhi, Nov 15 The 3-km section, which connects Connaught Place with the institutional area near ITO, is an eastward traverse of the Delhi metro’s 32-km line III that joins the central hub of the Capital with the Dwarka sub-city. If this happens, it is going to be the first time the DMRC will miss a deadline. In fact, on all previous occasions, including while constructing the technically very difficult underground segment in old Delhi through Chawri Bazaar, the DMRC managed to complete its work on time. At times, it was also able to finish an assigned task before the deadline. As per DMRC Director (Projects and Planning) C.B.K. Rao, the land for the metro alignment across the railway line, near the Pragati Maidan crossing, was made available to the DMRC by the Railways just about a month back and that too after some high-level interventions by the government. Which means that even though the Delhi metro has been trying its best to meet the March 2006 deadline for the section, there is a likelihood of the section, where the line emerges from underground and rises to run elevated, getting delayed by a couple of months. However, Mr Rao assured ‘The Tribune’ that the DMRC is trying its level best to ensure that this does not happen. The main segment of the Line-III that connects Connaught Place with Dwarka is scheduled to open by the end of December. The deadlines for segments between Dwarka and Dwarka sub-city and Barakhamba and Indraprastha are in March 2006. |
India leading nation that sends students to US
New Delhi, November 15 Open Doors 2005, the annual report on international academic mobility published by the Institute of International Education (IIE) with support from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, said that all of the five leading countries who send students abroad experienced increases in enrolment in 2004-05, and these five countries account for almost half (47%) of all international students in the United States. India remains the largest sending country for the fourth year in a row, with a total of 80,466 students, one per cent increase over the previous year’s enrolments. China, the second-largest sending country with 62,523 students, had one per cent increase in enrolment, after experiencing a decline of five per cent the previous year. The Republic of Korea, which remained the third leading sender for the fourth year in a row, was up by two per cent to 53,358. Japan, the fourth leading sender with 42,215 students in the U.S., experienced an increase in enrolment of three per cent reversing a trend in declining enrolments that began three years ago. Enrolment of students from Canada, the only non-Asian country in the top five, increased by four per cent to 28,140. The slight overall decline in international students enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities has been attributed to several factors, including real and perceived difficulties in obtaining student visas, rising U.S. tuition costs, vigorous recruitment activities by other English-speaking nations, and perceptions abroad that it is more difficult for international students to come to the United States. In addition, universities in students’ home countries and other regional host countries have been increasing their capacity to provide high-quality education. |

squatting and kneeling may also deteriorate the condition, said Dr Bachani. “Do not stress an already painful joint, diseases

keep these diseases in check,” he added. Use of drugs like steroids, prolonged use of antibiotics can also lead to progression of arthritis and doctors should be
consulted for alternatives, said Dr Bachani. He warned against the use of
intraarticular injection like steroid injections as it can cause irreversible damage to arthritis joints. |
