BSF annex football title
Nabha, October 23 In an absorbing final, the Jalandhar security men downed PSEB 2-1 to win the trophy for the fifth time. BSF had won the Governor’s Cup in Sikkim early this month. “Two titles in less than a month augur well for the team’s prospects in forthcoming tournaments,” said BSF coach Avtar Singh after the match. BSF opened the scoring through medio
J. Ouseph, who made his way speedily in from the right flank and chipped the ball home over two defenders and goalkeeper Bhupinder Singh. BSF could have increased the lead but striker Amarjit Rai’s power-packed shot hit the woodwork and the ball was cleared out of harm’s way by Rajkumar Gill, who sprinted in from the top of the box to near the goal line to help PSEB ward off what appeared to be a certain goal. Led admirably upfront by veteran Gurjit Atwal and Amarjit Rai and supported neatly in the midfield by Sarabjit Singh, the Jalandhar security men held the upper hand for almost the entire first half. Their defenders did a fine job, the midfielders gave good passes to the frontline, while the strikers made their presence by taking shots at the goal. Gurjit Atwal scored the team’s second goal after he was set up by Deepak Kumar. The Punjab power men made a mess of at least four clear chances in the first half. Much against the run of play, with BSF completely dominating the proceedings, PSEB managed to reduce the margin through half-back Parminder Singh, whose banana kick found the net. The second half saw BSF completely bottling up PSEB danger man Gurpreet Singh, a tactical move initiated by the BSF coach which aimed at throwing the frontline out of gear. Towards the end of the contest, BSF were reduced to 10 men when Deepak Kumar was shown the red card for rough play. The Jalandhar team was more content to retain the one-goal advantage, although PSEB did come close to scoring in the last minute. |
