BCCI awards telecast rights to Prasar Bharti

Kolkata, October 20
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today awarded the telecast rights for the one-day international series against Sri Lanka and South Africa to Prasar Bharti.

The state broadcaster clinched the deal after offering the BCCI a deal of Rs 7.5 crore per match.

Television house TWI was given the production rights for the two series.

India would play seven matches against Sri Lanka and five against South Africa. The series against Sri Lanka would start at Nagpur on October 25.

BCCI President Ranbir Singh Mahendra, also the chairman of the marketing committee, said while the board had received an offer from the TWI for the production of the two series, the attention of the committee had been drawn to an offer for production by Nimbus Sport.

The committee considered both offers and noted that while the production cost quoted by the TWI was $ 1.54 million (Rs 69.30 crore) for 12 matches, the quote of Nimbus Sport was $ 1.95 million (Rs 87.75 crore).

Since there was a difference of over Rs 17 crore, the committee decided that the responsibility of TV production for the two home series be given to the TWI, Mahendra said.

“The committee felt that in order to reach out to the largest possible Indian audience, the national broadcaster would be the best possible option for the Indian terrestrial and cable rights, more so since the same arrangement had been made in 2004,” he added.

Prasar Bharti had given an offer of Rs 7 crore per match for the terrestrial and cable rights, but after further negotiations with the committee today, it agreed to increase it to Rs 7.5 crore per match.

As far as overseas rights were concerned, the BCCI President and other office-bearers of the committee were authorised to negotiate with the prospective parties. — PTI

Differences persist on observer’s powers
Legal Correspondent

New Delhi, October 20
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and three state cricket bodies today failed to get Supreme Court approval for former Election Commissioner T.S. Krishnamurthy’s name as observer to the board’s annual general meeting as differences persisted over the powers to be given to him.

The main objection of the Rajasthan Cricket Association, the Netaji Cricket Club of Chennai and the Bihar Cricket Association was that whether the observer would have wide-ranging powers to decide who would participate in the meeting and vote and who would not.

Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for the Netaji Cricket Club, told a Bench comprising Mr Justice B.P. Singh and Mr Justice S.B. Sinha how the observer would be able to decide that who was a full member of the BCCI as there were disputes over at least three members and cases were pending in the court.

BCCI counsel K.K. Venugopal told the court that the differences between the parties had narrowed down and only two or three issues needed to be sorted out.

Mr Justice Sinha, who had been a member of the five-Judge Bench that had decided last year’s Zee TV case against the BCCI, agreed with Mr Salve that it would be difficult for the observer to decide the issue in the face of cumbersome BCCI rules.

“From my experience of being associated with the earlier case, I find it difficult to interpret BCCI rules as these are so cumbersome,” Mr Justice Sinha said.

The court gave the parties time till October 25 to sort out the matter and directed them to place on record the list of BCCI members and a copy of its rules and procedure.

Mr Venugopal said the BCCI was for sorting out the differences and not in favour of further complications as it would be of no use.

North shot out for 178

Rajkot, October 20
East Zone, marshalled well by Sourav Ganguly, shot out North Zone for a paltry 178 in the first innings before being reduced to 77 for four in reply on a dramatic opening day of the Duleep Trophy match here today.

At stumps, the left-handed Ganguly was batting on 19, which included four boundaries, while Laxmi Ratan Shukla was yet to score after North’s medium-pacers Gagandeep Singh and Amit Bhandari sent the top four batsmen back with only 59 runs on board.

Fourteen wickets tumbled during the day on a wicket with a greenish tinge on it after Ganguly won the toss and put North in to bat.

Tailender V.R.V. Singh topscored for North with his lusty hits, that fetched him 46 off only 35 balls with the help of two huge sixes and six fours, before becoming one of the two victims claimed by Ganguly. Earlier, North stuttered to 41 for four against a lively new-ball spell by Shiv Sunder Paul and Ranadeb Bose before Pankaj Dharmani (35 with six fours), Yashpal Singh, who hit five fours in his 25, and Sarandeep Singh (26 with five fours) helped them make a partial recovery. But a clutch of wickets later reduced North to 129 for 8 before V.R.V. Singh used the long handle to good effect.

East’s openers Shiv Sunder Das and Arindam Das were dismissed cheaply by Gagandeep Singh.

Bhandari bagged the wickets of Vasant Saravanan (30 with six fours) and Rohan Gavaskar (15) before Ganguly and Shukla denied North any more wicket.

Spinners restrict South Zone

Vadodara, October 20
Riding on a splendid spin spell by Ramesh Powar (4/78) and skipper Sairaj Bahutule (3/65), West Zone restricted South Zone to 219 all out in their first innings on the opening day of their four-day Duleep Trophy match being played at the Motibaug Palace ground here today.

However, by the end of the day, the smile in the West Zone dressing room had almost disappeared with the side losing two quick wickets — Satyajit Parab and Rakesh Patel — to South's main striking bowler Laxmipathy Balaji with only four runs on the board.

Offie Powar and leggie Bahutule, who took complete charge of the bowling barely an hour after lunch, wrecked the South Zone batting line up by continuing the double spin attack unchanged for 35.4 overs until the opponents lost their remaining seven wickets with only five overs of the day's 90-over quota to spare.

V V S Laxman-led South Zone, which was put to bat first on a bouncy track after Bahutule won the toss, would have been in a precarious situation had not Tamil Nadu southpaws Sridharan Sriram (43, 167 balls) and Hemang Badani (42, 109 balls) paired up to salvage the innings with their 81-run fourth wicket partnership. The duo, who were together after South crashed to 54 for three wickets, 22 minutes before lunch, held on to the crease till Bahutule dismissed Sriram through Satyajit Parab at mid-off at the stroke of Tea break.

The post-tea session however saw South Zone batsmen dancing to the tunes of the double spin attack of Powar and Bahutule, who shared the remaining six wickets conceding 84 runs as Powar chipped in with his four wickets of Badani (42), Anirudh Singh (7), Dinesh Karthik(34) and K S Shahbuddin (16) in quick succession.Balaji, who came at number ten, entertained the crowd hitting 19 off 28 balls with a four and a lofty six. — UNI

ICC mulls global Twenty20 tourney

London, October 20
Purists may scorn at the idea, but the slam-bang version of the game has forced the International Cricket Council (ICC) to consider hosting a global Twenty20 tournament, BBC Sports has reported.

The report has said a feasibility study is at an advanced stage and the ICC is gaining some idea from research carried out by the boards of England and South Africa.

The report has quoted the England and Wales Cricket Board as saying there is a move to embrace it on a controlled basis. The ICC is expected to consider the matter at its meeting in March.

Since its introduction three years ago, Twenty20 has proved a smashing hit in England before the version making its way to South Africa, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Australia and New Zealand have included Twenty20 tournaments in their domestic cricket.

Gibbs set to return as opener

Johannesburg, October 20
Herschelle Gibbs, set to make a comeback as an opening batsman, has challenged some of his star team-mates to regain their best form for South Africa’s first 20-overs international, against New Zealand at the Wanderers Stadium here tomorrow. Gibbs, back from injury, said he expected good performances from the five South Africans who played in the World XI one-day and Test teams against Australia.

South Africa started their preparations for tomorrow’s match without captain Graeme Smith, wicketkeeper Mark Boucher and allrounders Jacques Kallis and Shaun Pollock, who were due to return from Australia yesterday.

Fast bowler Makhaya Ntini, who played in the Super Series one-dayers, had returned earlier. Gibbs said new coach Mickey Arthur had suggested that he might open the batting after a stint in the middle order last season. “I will be happy to move back up the order. Some of my best cricket has been as an opener. I will not necessarily open, but I will like to be in the top three.”

A knee injury had kept Gibbs out of the Afro-Asia Cup in August and forced him to withdraw from the World XI one-day team.

South Africa squad: Graeme Smith (captain), Jacques Kallis (vice-captain), Nicky Boje, Mark Boucher, A.B. de Villiers, Boeta Dippenaar, Herschelle Gibbs, Andrew Hall, Justin Kemp, Charl Langeveldt, Albie Morkel, Andre Nel, Makhaya Ntini, Shaun Pollock, Ashwell Prince.

New Zealand team: Stephen Fleming (captain), Daniel Vettori (vice-captain), Andre Adams, Nathan Astle, Shane Bond, James Franklin, Hamish Marshall, James Marshall, Brendon McCullum, Craig McMillan, Kyle Mills, Jacob Oram, Jeetan Patel, Scott Styris, Lou Vincent. — AFP

Irina Brar tears ligament
Not to play in Punjab Open golf
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 20
Irina Brar, the reigning golf queen, is in for another phase of ill luck. Yes, while practising for the Punjab Open Ladies Amateur Golf Championship, which gets under way next Tuesday, she tore a ligament to end up with a plastered left hand. And Dr Vijkay Goni of the PGI advised her rest for three weeks.

Two days back she was practising on the greens rearing to make it a seventh title win in the Punjab Open. But the ligament injury has made the seventh-in-a-row dream a nightmare for her.

Last year she had sent the officials scurrying for their record books when she set a course record by returning a five-under card in the Northern India Open Ladies Amateur Golf Championship. And that was despite the nagging lower back pain which had forced her to lay off the game for several months.

She was eager to make it again this year as the lower back pain was not giving her that much trouble. But the ligament tear came at a time when she was executing a difficult drive on the second hole yesterday.

As she narrated the painful experience of yesterday, Irina appeared dejected. But she said she would definitely make it for the Noida Ladies Open scheduled for November 15. She will try and make it in the other matches of the ladies circuit. The plastered left hand did not stop the golf icon from practising putting and chipping with her right hand. A MA Part I student of DAV College, the five-foot-eight Chandigarh girl, has had a stint in modelling. But her first love remains golf. Adidas has sponsored her kit.

Samarvir Sahi golf set for close finish
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 20
The Royal Challenge Samarvir Sahi Golf Tournament was set for a close finish with five teenagers poised within striking distance of the coveted trophy — a margin of just three strokes — on the penultimate day of the amateur event on the lush course of the Chandigarh Golf Club here today.

Anirban Lahiri from Bangalore and defending champion Gaganjeet Bhullar from Kapurthala played a similar two-under card of 70 with just one stroke dividing them after the third round.

After 15-year-old Rahul Bakshi of Chandigarh had hogged the limelight for the first two days, Lahiri made his move to grab a one-stroke lead. The 18-year-old fired a two-under of 70, the best round in the tournament thus far, for a 54-hole total of one-under 215.

Seventeen-year old Bhullar returned a similar card to be in the second place at level par 216. Manav Jaini’s 71 put him in the third spot at 217.

Overnight leader Bakshi was tied for the fourth position along with Jaskeerat Dullet. Jasjeet Singh and Gagan Verma shared the sixth place at 219. Shaurya Singh, who also matched the day’s best, was sole eighth at 220.

Lahiri took some time before striking form. After a sole birdie on the third, the 18-year-old ran into trouble with his drives and lost three strokes in four holes, courtesy his bad driving. Those bogeys came on the seventh, ninth and the 10th. However, a chip-in from the edge of the green on the 11th for a birdie got him going.

He followed it up with successive birdies on the next two holes, an effort of his short game. After missing another birdie on the 15th, Lahiri with a driver-3 wood approach was just short of the green on the par-5 16th. He chipped to four feet for his fifth birdie of the day.

Bhullar scripted a similar story. Beginning with a bogey, which was nullified on the second hole, the 17-year-old made two more bogeys on the fourth and eighth, with three-putting on the latter, to be two-over for the front nine.

Successive birdies on the 11th and 12th put him back on track. After a series of pars, he finished strongly with back to back birdies on the last two holes to be tied for second.

“I could have made more birdies, but a couple of putts lipped out,” he said. With the players bunched closely, it would be an interesting final day’s play.

Top scores (after 54 holes): 215 Anirban Lahiri (71, 74, 70); 216 Gaganjeet S. Bhullar (74, 72, 70); 217 Manav Jaini (71, 75, 71); 218 Jaskeerat S. Dullet (73, 73, 72), Rahul Bakshi (71, 73, 74); 219 Jasjeet Singh (74, 73, 72), Gagan Verma (71, 74, 74); 220 Shaurya Singh (75, 75, 70); 221 Vikram Rana (76, 73, 72); 222 Amit Nigam (72, 75, 75), Himmat Singh Rai (71, 75, 76); 224 Amanjyot Singh (77, 75, 72); 225 Joseph Chakola (73, 77, 75), Raj Randhawa (75, 75, 75), Balpreet Ghuman (74, 76, 75), Simarjeet Singh (73, 75, 77).

Jyoti Randhawa tied 12th

Chiba (Japan), October 20
Jyoti Randhawa carded a three-under 69 to finish tied 12th while Jeev Milkha Singh finished one stroke behind to be at the tied 27th place after the first round of the Bridgestone Open here today.

Jong-Duck Kim fired a sparkling seven-under 65 to grab the sole lead, ahead of the duo of David Smail and Katsuyoshi Tomori, who were breathing down Kim’s neck after identical six-under 66.

At the par-72 Sodegaura Country Club, Randhawa was consistent and barring two bogeys — one in each nine — had a fairly good outing. His string of six par shots was intercepted by a birdie on the second before Randhawa stumbled on the first bogey on the seventh.

He completed his halfway journey in style with a birdie on the ninth and the back nine turned out to be better. Randhawa was almost flawless as he fired birdies on the 11th, 13th and 15th with par shots in between and just when he was looking to wrap up a fruitful day, a bogey on the 17th pulled him back. Jeev put up a better show on the back nine to card two-under 70. — UNI

Bhupathi-Damm in second round

New Delhi, October 20
Mahesh Bhupathi and Martin Damm of Czech Republic caused the biggest upset of the tournament when they ousted top-seeded Bob and Mike Bryan of the USA in the first round of the Masters Series in Madrid yesterday.

The unseeded Indo-Czech pair rallied to a 6-3, 6-7(8), 6-2 win to advance to the second round.

They would next meet Leander Paes and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia and Montenegro, according to information received here today.

Bhupathi and Damm took full advantage of the lacklustre form of their American opponents and pulled off the first set with ease, but the top seeds levelled the issue in the second set, which was stretched to a tie-breaker.

Sania Mirza eyeing top-15 spot

Jaipur, October 20
Having gone beyond her stated goal of breaking into top-50 in world rankings in her debut season, Sania Mirza is now eyeing a spot among the top 15.

Sunil sails into semis
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, October 20
Former champion and top seed Sunil Kumar Sipaeya maintained his fine form when he beat back the challenge of Navdeep Singh 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 33 minutes to sail into the men's singles semifinal of the DSCL Open National Tennis Championship at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association deco-turf court here today.

Sunil Kumar played solid, consistent tennis and operating from the baseline with powerful backhand returns, overwhelmed Navdeep, who had threatened to take the battle to the wire, but failed to match wits with Sunil when it came to hitting the big points to lose in straight sets.

Sunil will take on fifth-seeded Kamala Kannan in the semifinal tomorrow.

Kamala Kannan posted an upset 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory over third-seeded Arjun Goutham of Karnataka. But the biggest upset was caused by unseeded Tushar Liberhan of Chandigarh who knocked out second-seeded Vijay Kannan of Tamil Nadu 7-6, 7-6. Tushar will meet fourth-seeded Ashutosh Singh of Delhi in the semifinal. Ashutosh toyed with qualifier Siddharth Patil of Maharashtra 6-1, 6-2 in a lop-sided match.

In the women's section, top seed Isha Lakhani breezed past Anushree Thamanna 6-1, 6-1 to enter the semifinal.

However, second seeded Sonal Phadke had to draw out her best to survive and beat seventh seed Geeta Manohar 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Sixth seed Parul Goswami shocked third seed Archana Venkataraman 6-3, 6-3 to meet Sonal in the semis.

JCT Academy, PSEB enter last four
Ravi Dhaliwal

Nabha, October 20
For JCT Academy, runners-up in the last edition, everything went according to the script as the Phagwara-based outfit notched up a facile 3-0 win over RCF Kapurthala to enter the semifinals of the 30th All India Gurdarshan memorial football tournament played at Ripudaman College here today. In the other quarterfinal match played today, PSEB, powered by a 35 yard pile driver, scored by veteran Amritpal Singh, in the first half, knocked out the challenge of S.N. College, Banga 1-0 to make it to the last four.

The other two semifinalists will be decided tomorrow when Sultan Sports Club, Jodhpur, will square off against CRPF while the youngsters of Khalsa College, Jalandhar, will clash with BSF, Jalandhar.

For JCT Academy, the spotlight was on Asim Hassan who was made to play as a striker instead of a winger by the academy coach. After yesterday’s show against SGGSC, Mahilpur, where he gave a polished display, the player once again demonstrated his tactical abilities in ample measure against the railmen.

In the opening minutes of the first half, Asim combined with Hardeep Singh beautifully and both repeatedly tore into the rival defense. However, they were not able to get past RCF’s defenders. Minutes before half time, Asim headed home the first goal. In the second half RCF went on the defensive but to no avail as Asim struck again.

Down by two goals and with time fast running out RCF simply faded away making way for the academy boys to book a semifinal slot. For the record, Navtej Singh, up against a lethargic defense, scored in the last minute to wrap up the game 3-0 for the academy lads.
