All eyes on Ganguly in Duleep Trophy tie
Rajkot, October 19 Ganguly, who missed the Challenger Trophy due to a tennis elbow, was declared fit by BCCI-appointed doctor Anant Joshi and Indian team physio John Gloster yesterday in Mumbai and joined the rest of his team-mates this morning for the pre-match practice session. The match is crucial for the deposed India captain, who is striving to regain his berth in the one-day squad against Sri Lanka after not being considered for the first two matches of the seven-match series by the selection committee. “This is my first domestic cricket tournament of the season and I am looking forward to it to do well,” he told reporters today. “This wicket has always been a good batting wicket and it has been proved so by some high-scoring international and domestic games,” Ganguly said. Besides Ganguly, East Zone are depending on Rohan Gavaskar, opener Shiv Sunder Das, Arindam Das and allrounder Laxmi Ratan Shukla to shore up the batting, along with experienced wicketkeeper-batsman Deep Dasgupta. North Zone, led by Dinesh Mongia, have some talented batsmen like Ravneet Ricky, Shikhar Dhawan, Yashpal Singh and Pankaj Dharmani. But the team will miss the services of Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh, who have been chosen in the Indian one-day squad to take on Sri Lanka in the first two ODIs. North Zone’s bowling looks slightly more penetrative than their rivals’, especially in the medium-pace department, to be handled by V.R.V. Singh, who worked up good pace in the Challenger Trophy, and the more experienced Amit Bhandari and Joginder Sharma. Teams (from): East Zone: Sourav Ganguly (captain), Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Arindam Das, Rohan Gavaskar, Sanjeev Satyapal, S.S. Paul, Ranadeb Bose, Manoj Tiwari, S.S. Das, Niranjan Behra, Deep Dasgupta (wicketkeeper), S.S. Rao, Shahbaz Nadeem, Vasant Saravanan, Sujit Roy. North Zone:
Dinesh Mongia (captain), Ravneet Ricky, Pankaj Dharmani (wicketkeeper), Gagandeep Singh, V.R.V. Singh, Amit Bhandari, Shikhar Dhawan, Sunny Singh, Sarandeep Singh, Joginder Sharma, Amit Mishra, Yashpal Singh, Manvinder Bisla, Sangram Singh, Vishal Bhatia.

Cricketers’ camp begins
Bangalore, October 19 Captain Rahul Dravid and opener Virender Sehwag, who had just returned from Australia after playing in the ICC Super Series, were expected to join the camp tomorrow. All other players, including Sachin Tendulkar, back after a gap of six months after undergoing surgery, took part in the training under the close watch of coach Greg Chappell. Physio John Gloster, trainer Gregory King and kinesiologist Ian Fraser were present. In the afternoon, the players went in for net practice, though rain played spoilsport a couple of times. Chappell refused to talk to mediapersons, saying it was only a camp and he had nothing to say.

Cricket board for Krishnamurthy as poll observer
New Delhi, October 19 Counsel for the BCCI, Rajasthan Cricket Association, Netaji Cricket Club of Chennai and Bihar Cricket Association told a Bench of Mr Justice B. P. Singh and Mr Justice S. B. Sinha that Krishnamurthy was their unanimous choice. The three state cricket bodies were at loggerheads with the BCCI over the manner the AGM was to be conducted. The court had on previous hearing sought a name of a non-judicial member for observer after the appointment of two former Chief Justices of India and a retired Supreme Court judge had run into a controversy. The apex court had taken exception to the way the two former CJIs were treated in the whole episode when their appointment had become a subject matter of an unending legal proceeding in Calcutta High Court on September 23, the day AGM was convened. The AGM, supposed to elect BCCI President and its new executive, was later deferred by two months by an unanimous decision by the BCCI members, following the legal battle. The contest between Union Minister Sharad Pawar and Ranbir Singh Mahindra for the BCCI President's post had become a prestige issue for both of them as well as former BCCI chief Jagmohan Dalmiya, supporting Mahindra. The Court fixed further hearing in the matter tomorrow, after counsel for litigating parties said Krishnamurthy would be empowered by them to decide all disputes pertaining to the BCCI affairs as they did not want to approach the courts every time. |
BCCI slams PCA for not giving accounts
Chandigarh, October 19 BCCI chief Ranbir Singh Mahendra told reporters here that the PCA was yet to submit details pertaining to the Challenger series, played from October 10 to 13 and involving India Seniors, India A and India B. “The PCA has not written to the board. They are supposed to give details of all accounts,” Mahendra said on the sidelines of a Congress function here. He said the PCA would have to adhere to the rules of the board, under which a state association could not get away without giving financial and other details on the pretext that it had organised and marketed the event.

Rahul grabs one-stroke lead in Samarvir Sahi golf
Chandigarh, October 19 The other overnight leaders, Gagan Verma and Anirban Lahiri, shot an identical two-over par 74 to be tied for the second place while defending champion Gaganjeet Bhullar shot a level par round of 72 to catapult to a tied-fourth position after being tied for the 12th spot overnight. He also returned the best card of the day. Sharing the fourth spot with the Kapurthala lad were Jaskeerat Dullet, Himmat Singh Rai and Manav Jaini, who all were at two-over 146. Jasjeet Singh and Amit Nigam were tied for the eighth place at three-over 147. Fortythree players made it to the last two rounds after the cut was applied at 15-over 159. Keshav Kapoor matched Gaganjeet’s best round of 72, but was tied at 12th spot. Rahul Bakshi played with such cool that his senior counterparts should take a lesson or two. Playing with a bit of pressure of the leader’s tag, he adopted a defensive approach. A 10th tee starter, he made an ominous start with a bogey. He nullified it with a nice birdie on the par-5 13th. With a bogey on the penultimate hole of his front nine, he made the turn at one-over. On the back nine, Rahul was more consistent, making pars on the first four holes, before losing a stroke on the par-4 fifth. After a hat-trick of pars, he signed off with a birdie on the finishing hole. “It is great to be in the leader’s position. Hope I maintain it till the end,” said a confident Rahul. “I am used to this position in the junior circuit. I was a bit nervous for the first few holes and then I stuck to my game,” he added. Gaganjeet Bhullar had a disastrous start, losing four strokes in the first three holes. The 16-year-old then made amends by making three birdies on the 14th, 16th and 17th before making the turn. Three birdies and two bogeys on the back nine saved him from going over for the day. His birdies came on the third , sixth and eighth while he went over on the first and fifth. Top scores (after 36 holes): 144 Rahul Bakshi (71, 73); 145 Gagan Verma (71, 74), Anirban Lahiri (71, 74); 146 Gaganjeet S. Bhullar (74, 72), Jaskeerat S. Dullet (73, 73), Himmat Singh Rai (71, 75), Manav Jaini (71, 75); 147 Jasjeet Singh (74, 73), Amit Nigam (72, 75); 148 Simarjeet Singh (73, 75); 149 Vikram Rana (76, 73); 150 Shaurya Singh (75, 75); Raj Randhawa (75, 75), Balpreet Ghuman (74, 76), Joseph Chakola (73, 77). |
Khalsa College, JCT Academy in last eight
Nabha, October 19 Five of the six teams, which had their pre-quarterfinal matches today, had one common factor. All of them have their roots in the Doaba region which has produced numerous international and national-level football players. Khalsa college, Jalandhar, and JCT Academy made it to the last eight beating Khalsa College, Garhshankar, 4-3 and SGGSC, Mahilpur, 1-0 , respectively. However DFA, Kapurthala, yet another Doaba- based outfit, missed the bus when they went down to CRPF 0-1. The spotlight on day four was on last year's runners-up JCT Academy who started the proceedings on a defensive note against SGGSC, , who taking advantage of defensive lapses by the millmen, came close to scoring on a couple of occasions in the first half. Striker Balwant Singh after receiving a through pass from winger Satinder Singh dribbled the ball past the defense but in his eagerness to score he shot the ball wide. On the second occasion, it was again Balwant who turned the villain when, after doing all the hard work in the rival territory, he had only the custodian S.P. Singh at his mercy. However, much to the chagrin of his colleagues, Balwant again fumbled before an empty goal mouth. In the second half, JCT Academy players, with a reputation to defend, pulled up their socks and went on the offensive. Strikers Sikander Singh and Gurvinder Singh combined well and repeatedly raided the rival citadel but found S.P. Singh, playing under the Mahilpur bar, raising his game by a couple of notches to time and again thwart the duo. However, towards the fag end of the second half, the Academy players started attacking vigorously and scored the all important goal when winger Asim Hassan, son of Malerkotla-based Punjab Sports Department coach Ali Hassan, ran down the left flank and dodged past his way inside the danger area and unleashed a power- packed left footer which sailed into the goal. Try as they did JCT went all out to score the second goal which would have acted as a cushion but S.P Singh had a wonderful day and saved his team the blushes of going down by more than one goal. In the last match of the day, DFA, Kapurthala youngsters put in a spirited performance but ultimately it was the experience and expertise of the CRPF men that carried the day for them. |
Tony Roche to train Sania
New Delhi, October 19 The Australian great would work on specific areas of weaknesses in Sania’s game, particularly her serve, as the 18-year-old Hyderabadi starts the new season from an event which catapulted her to the big league. It was at the Australian Open last year when Sania shot into limelight, becoming the first Indian woman ever to reach the third round of any Grand Slam. “Sania will start training in late December after a short winter break. She will train with Roche for three weeks in Sydney,” Sania’s father Imran Mirza told PTI over phone from Hyderabad. Imran said it was only after former Indian Davis Cupper Jaideep Mukherjea put in a word that Roche agreed to take up the assignment. “Roche accepted to coach Sania only after Mukherjea put in a word. He normally does not take up assignments just like that and definitely not for someone like Sania who is up and coming talent,” he said. Roche signed up as the part-time coach of Federer at the beginning of this year only after great insistence from the Swiss multiple Grand Slam winner.

Paes-Zimonjic in second round
New Delhi, October 19 The 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 victory at the eighth Masters series event of the year boosted their chances of qualifying for the season ending Tennis Maters Cup in Shanghai. Paes and Zimonjic are currently sixth in the ATP Doubles Race. The Indian ace and his partner breezed through the first set with the loss of only one game but Dent and Ginepri came roaring back to take the second with an identical margin to push the encounter played at the Madrid Arena into a decider. The third set was closely contested and went to the tie-breaker where Paes and Zimonjic kept their cool to edge it 7-4, according to information received here. Dent and Ginepri were filling in as alternates in the draw after Rafael Nadal and Feliciano Lopez withdrew from the doubles due to a knee injury troubling the second ranked singles player in the world. The other Indian stalwart in the draw, Mahesh Bhupathi teams up with Martin Damm of the Czech Republic to take on the Bryan brothers, Bob and Mike, in the first round. If they get through the tough encounter, the Indian Davis Cup teammates will face each other in the next round.
