Power supply
: The Kisan Sangharsh Committee (KSC) has criticised the state government for providing two-hour power supply to farmers. Mr Kanwalpreet Singh Pannu, convener, KSC, said crops of basmati and potato were suffering. He sought eight-hour supply for farmers. He alleged that government officials were harassing farmers.

Foundation day: The Chief Khalsa Diwan will celebrate its foundation day on October 28. A special programme will be held at Sri Guru Harkrishan Senior Secondary Public School. Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti will be the chief guest.

Protest: The Punjab Health Department Subordinate Offices Clerical Association (PHDSOCA) has threatened to hold a state-level protest on November 9 at Chandigarh if their demands are not met. This was decided at a meeting of the association held under the chairmanship of Sushil Kumar here on Saturday.

Meeting: The regional committee of the All-India Overseas Bank Employees Union held a meeting here on Saturday. Mr S.S. Dhillon, a member of the committee, said they discussed the anti-employee policies of the government, including privatisation, and transfer of employees.

Honoured: Six persons were honoured with annual Vocational Excellence Award by the Rotary Club at a function organised here on Friday. Mr Navjot Sidhu, Member of Parliament, honoured Dr Harshbir Singh, Mr Kewal Dhaliwal, Mr Balwinder Singh, Ms Rashmi Talwar, Ms Poonam Singh and Mr S.K. Mukerjee. Dr Kiran Duggal, president, Rotary Club, presided over the function.

Grievance redressed: The grievance of a student, Akhil Sharma, was redressed during a ‘Jan Sampark Divas’ here on Thursday. According to information, Akhil Sharma had got admission in IITT College, Pojewl, and submitted original certificates along with fee. Meanwhile, Akhil had got admission in Chandigarh. So, he submitted an application on October 5, for the return of the certificates and refundable fee. The college management had adopted dilly-dallying approach. Akhil Sharma had filed a complaint at a ‘Jan Sampark Divas’. The Deputy Commissioner asked the SDM, Balachaur, to take an action. Mr Pankaj Srivastva, Chairman, Principal, and Establishment Officer of the institute returned the certificates to Akhil Sharma on Wednesday. The college management is yet to refund the fee.

Inaugurated
: Dr Kamlesh Chandra Chakrabarty, CMD, Indian Bank, inaugurated the administrative block of Rayat Institute of Engineering and Information Technology at its campus here on Saturday. He was accompanied by Mr Gurvinder Singh Bahra, vice-chairman, Rayat Educational and Research Trust.

MULTIPLEX: Suraj Theatre in Sector 1 here is all set to be converted into a multiplex. The bhoomi pujan for beginning the work was held with much fanfare here on Sunday. The multiplex, Suraj City, will have four cinema halls, banquet hall, eating joints and a shopping arcade.

LOTTERY DRAW: Parents of students of New India Senior Secondary School, Sector 15, on Sunday held a meeting and later met the SDM, Mr Virender Dahiya, urging him to abstain the school authorities from holding a draw for a lottery. They alleged that the school authorities were forcing their children to sell tickets and the draw was to be held on Monday. The parents also formed a parents association by electing Mr Ramesh Sharma its President.

Ambala
Youth fest: The All-India Mahatma Hans Raj Aryan Youth Festival will be organised at DAV Public School, Ambala city, from October 24 to 26 in which a large number of DAV institutions will participate. The Principal of the school, Ms Renna Nagrath, said the Commissioner Ambala Division, Dr Mahavir Singh, would inaugurate the festival. Ms Sujatha Gupta CEO Cantonment Board, would preside over the cultural function to be organised on October 25 while Senior Superintendent of Police, Rabjir Deswal would be the chief guest on the concluding day.

Drainage work: State Excise and Taxation Minister Vinod Sharma will launch the construction work of two main drainages of Ambala city on Monday. According to the media in charge of Ambala Congress, Mr Dalip Chawla Bitu, the cost of the construction would come to Rs 76 lakh.

Championship: Students of Vishvash Public School, Ambala city, won medals in the district-level karate championship which was organised at War Hero Memorial stadium at Ambala Cantt on Sunday. According to Ms Indu Kapoor, Principal of the school, Amanpreet and Abhishek won the gold medals while Ashmeet and Harsh Wardan won silver, while Daksh and Naval won bronze medals in the championship.

BLOOD DONATION: A blood donation camp was organised at Railway Hospital, Ambala Cantt, on Sunday. Divisional Railway Manager Rakesh Kumar Tandon inaugurated the camp. As many as 51 persons donated blood, including Additional DRM Anoop Gupta, Mr Vijay Kumar Chopra, according to Medical Superintendent MC Srivastava. The camp was organised by the Uttar Railway Mahila Kalyan Sangathan.

QUIZ: An inter-school quiz competition was organised by the Chunmun Club here on Saturday. Mr Ashok Sharma, director of club, said DC Model School team stood first, KV No. 3 was second while SS Little Angels School team grabbed the third position. KV No.1 team stood at fourth position. Mr Sharma said the quiz was held in four rounds, including individual round, buzzer round and rapid fire round.

Looted:
Three armed youths looted a petrol station situated on the Kaithal-Jind road at gunpoint here on Saturday. According to an information, three youths with covered faces came on a motor cycle to the petrol station of Reliance company and pulled out their pistols and threatened the staff to hand over the cash. The staff reportedly handed over the cash to the miscreants. The police has registered a case.

Elected: Mr Devi Dayal Mittal was unanimously elected president of the Municipal Committee, Kalayat town, on Friday. The post had become vacant after a non confidence motion was passed against the former president, Ms Sushila Rana, two months ago.

Directive to LIC: The District Consumer Forum has directed the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) to pay a sum of Rs 1 lakh along with 9 per cent interest to the wife of a deceased person. According to information, Rashmi Devi had filed a complaint before the forum in which she alleged that her husband Prem Singh had purchased an insurance policy for Rs 1 lakh from the LIC. However, Prem Singh died of a heart attack on July 17, 2002. The family members requested the company for payment. However the company refused to entertain their claim. After hearing, the forum president, Mr I.S Punia, and Mr Partap Singh directed the company to pay her Rs 1 lakh.

Two killed
: Two migrant labourers were killed at Tau Devi Lal Thermal Power Station, Panipat, on Saturday. The deceased have been identified as Chamak Yadav and Ashok Yadav of Jamaui district in Bihar. According to information, they were killed during unloading of coal from a wagon.

Patwari caught: The Vigilance Bureau has caught Krishan Lal, Patwari, while accepting a bribe of Rs 1,500 from Mr Ajmer of Salpani village for distribution of compensation amount for damaged crops. A case has been registered.

BILASPUR
Ban orders: The Deputy Commissioner-cum-Magistrate, Mr Manish Garg, has put a ban on burst of crackers between 10 pm to 6 am. He also banned the use of crackers within 100 metres radius of schools and hospitals.

CHAMBA
Sanitation drive: Mr Harsh Mahajan, Animal Husbandry and Urban Development Minister, Himachal Pradesh, launched a district-level total sanitation campaign at Batalwan temple here on Friday. The campaign was organised by the District Rural Development Agency.

NAHAN
Inaugurated: The Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha Speaker, Mr G.R. Musafir, inaugurated a 2.7 km link road to Shamlati and laid foundation stone of Devkoti irrigation scheme here on Friday. Addressing a meeting, Mr Musafir said Rs 28 crore was being spent on different and drinking water schemes in Sirmaur district.
