Protesters block traffic

Ludhiana, September 3
Demonstrations against Gohana incident continued in the city for the second day today. An unruly mob burnt an effigy of the Haryana Government and blocked traffic on Cheema Chowk for almost an hour causing inconvenience to the commuters.

Two sisters commit suicide
Ludhiana, September 3
Deeply upset over the allegations of killing her mother-in-law, a woman and her sister allegedly committed suicide after eating some poisonous substance in Gurpal Nagar here today morning.

Post offices to accept payment of power bills
Ludhiana, September 3
Post offices in Ludhiana will henceforth accept payment of electricity bills. At the same time, the Department of Posts intends to offer several other value-added services to the residents.

New power wires for Civil Lines

The Punjab State Electricity Board started replacing loose hanging wires at Kundanpuri in the Civil Lines here today. The action comes in the wake of a Tribune report on the residents complaints to the board regarding the danger posed by loose wiring in the area.

Couple killed in mishap
Jagraon, September 3
A couple was killed and their driver was wounded in a bus car collision on the Jagraon-Ludhiana road, 8 km from here, near Chowkiman, today. Harjinder Kumar 35, son of Banarsi Das of Balbir Basti Guru Har Sahi and his wife were being driven by Bhagwan Das to Ludhiana in their Esteem car (No. HR-17-2127).

Disturbed over the rising steel prices, cycle and cycle parts manufacturers have urged the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, to come to the rescue of the “already ailing” industry and take measures to regulate the prices.

Hosiery units sore over power cuts
Ludhiana, September 3
A delegation of the Knitwear Club today submitted a memorandum to the Parliamentary Secretary Mr Surinder Dawer, on the worsening power situation in the state. Members said hosiery industry was a seasonal industry and since it was the peak production period, the industry would fail to meet its target for exports and domestic orders.

Importance of eye donation

The state government will launch an awareness drive to promote eye donation in the state in collaboration with NGOs and other institutions. This was stated by Mr Ramesh Chander Dogra, Health and Family Welfare Minister, addressing a function organised by the Punarjot Eye Donation Bank on the eve of national Eye Donation Awareness Fortnight here today.
