Grievance redressal committees to be set up
New Delhi, September 3 At a meeting today, chaired by Chief Secretary S Regunathan, it was decided that committees will be set up under each of 27 SDMs, which will comprise among others one representative each from the Consumer Council and RWAs. Officials said that under each of these committees would be 5 teams, which will have a trained technical person from the concerned Discom, a Consumer Council representative and a RWA representative. The committees are being formed in pursuance of the decisions taken at the Delhi Cabinet meeting earlier this week, in which it was also decided that the power tariff hike be rolled back. The teams are expected to become functional in a week or two and the meter-testing exercise will take place every Saturday. In addition to this, it was also decided the Discoms would form consumer forums to redress complaints from the citizens. Meanwhile, Delhi government today wrote to the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) seeking directions on disbursement of 5 per cent subsidy announced by it to facilitate rollback of the electricity tariff hike. Meanwhile, a new survey has revealed that although a majority of Delhiites felt that power supply has improved after privatisation, the Delhi government’s decision to roll back the 10 per cent hike in power tariff was forced by the intense pressure from Resident Welfare Associations. The survey conducted between August 30 and September 1 by Centre for Market Research & Social Development showed that out of 3,452 respondents, 57 per cent felt that opposition from RWAs was the prime reason for the roll back. Only 16 per cent credited it to Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, while just 9 per cent believed it was due to the efforts of Congress MLAs, the survey disclosed. About 59 per cent of those surveyed said power supply has improved after privatisation against 27 per cent who thought otherwise. Further, 57 per cent of those polled said there was no need to reverse the privatisation. While over half (52 per cent) did not approve of the decision to raise tariffs, a majority 71 per cent said that Sheila Dikshit government took a “timely” decision to roll back the tariff hike. Sheila Dikshit found unprecedented support from the respondents, 69 per cent of whom said she need not resign as against 18 per cent who wanted her to quit. A similar percentage of people (69 per cent) believed that the issue was unnecessarily politicised, the survey said. |
NSUI makes clean sweep in DUSU poll
New Delhi, September 3 The NSUI’s sweeping comeback was, however, a surprise to many within the party itself. Routing arch rivals the ABVP, the NSUI managed to retain its hold on the DUSU panel for the third consecutive time. While ABVP’s Gaurav Khari had managed to win the post of joint secretary last year, the party could make no such claims this year. The NSUI’s presidential candidate, Ragini Nayak, polled 13,447. Coming a close second was the ABVP’s Sundar Dagar, who polled 9,212. Arun Sorot of the INSO polled 1156 and Harpreet of the USF 1,393. Amrita Dhwan, living up to expectations polled 17,483, the highest amongst all candidates and also won by a huge margin. She won the vice president’s post defeating her closest rival Rahul Arya, who polled 4,933 votes. Deen Dayal of the USF and Sonia Sehrawat of the INSO polled 1,577 and 2,994 votes respectively. Ramit, who won the secretary’s post, bagged 9,230 votes, while Deepak Chaudhary, who won the seat of the joint secretary, bagged 9,939 votes. While the Congress bigwigs, including party president Sonia Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit were prompt in sending complimentary messages, the ABVP on their part reiterated that NSUI’s win is a reflection of how campus politics has been overshadowed by the presence of political bigwigs. “We were fighting against the Congress party, not the NSUI,” said ABVP’s state secretary, Nakul Bhardwaj. |

The official had been accused of providing a no-objection certificate (NOC) to a building in Sector 31, which never existed. The certificate was provided even before the application was moved to the department in December 2001. The complaint in this connection was lodged by a resident of Sector 21 on March 25, 2002, who had given details of this irregularity to the then Deputy Commissioner, Mr Arun Kumar, who had been holding the charge of the office of the Commissioner, MCF, additionally. It is reported that Mr Kumar visited the site and found that there had been no building on the plot for which the NOC was given by the official concerned. The Deputy Commissioner had then sent the report to the office of the Chief Secretary, Haryana, for further action against the accused, but the matter kept hanging fire for a long time due to laxity on the part of the police officials who had been investigating the case. The complainant, who had nothing to do with the case personally, was not only harassed but was also reportedly threatened several times. Though an FIR was lodged many months ago, the suspension was finally ordered recently. |
