Two sisters commit suicide
Ludhiana, September 3 The women, Tejinder Kaur and Hardeep Kaur, allegedly took the extreme upset after suffering alleged harassment at the hands of Tejinder Kaur's father-in-law, Bhag Singh, who suspected them of killing his wife, Harjit Kaur, in May this year. While Tejinder was her main suspect, her sister was suspected of helping her in the alleged crime. Bhag Singh had alleged that Tejinder had murdered her mother-in-law to gain complete control over the family. The police had also allegedly questioned the two women several times on the complaint of their father-in-law, Bhag Singh. The women had been living in their parents' house for the last few weeks due to the confrontation with their father-in-law. Their brother, Manjit Singh, rushed them to the hospital but it was too late. The SP City-II, Mr Kuldip Singh, told Ludhiana Tribune that a case of abetment to suicide had been registered against the father-in-law, Bhag Singh, and Mandeep Kaur, his second daughter-in-law. They were absconding. Bhag Singh had also spent several years in Kuwait and had recently returned here. The women had left a suicide note before consuming poison in which they alleged that he and Mandeep Kaur had made their life hell. Later, in their dying statement before the police, the women reiterated that despite their clarifications, Bhag Singh did not believe them. The women said the police had questioned them several time but they were found innocent. Baldev Singh, husband of Tejinder Kaur, was away to Mumbai at the time of the tragedy. Police sources said he had been informed about the incident. Tejinder Kaur had a 10-year-old son Amandeep Singh while Hardeep Kaur had a one-year-old daughter. The suicides had further deepened the mystery surrounding the death of their mother-in-law, Harjit Kaur. Till now, police officials were suspecting that some family member could have murdered her. In this context, both the women were questioned but no headway was made in the investigations. Harjit Kaur, 58, was reportedly found strangulated to death with a pillow. She seemed to have bore a lot of pain as suggested by the struggle marks found on her bed. The accused had reportedly tied her legs and arms and her mouth to control her. All this reportedly went on while her four-year-old granddaughter slept by her side undisturbed. His two sons and their wives sleeping in two adjacent room in the house also remained unaware of the happening. Despite examination of certain clues from the crime scene, the police was still unable to decide the way the woman was murdered. The motive of the crime was not robbery as only Rs 1200 was found missing from the room. The jewellery worn by the deceased was found intact. No effort was made to break open the almirah or enter the other rooms in the house. The case has become intriguing now with the suicides. |
Parties prepare for MC byelection
Ludhiana, September 3 The Congress is, however, yet to name its candidate. There are reports that Mr Puri, who did not resign from the Congress, was trying to get some of his close relatives nominated for the ward. However, other people have also staked their claim to the seat. Mr Puri had won in 2002 with a handsome margin. The party appears to be confident about repeating its performance this time. Mayor Nahar Singh Gill asserts that given the performance of the Congress government during all these years victory in the ward was a forgone conclusion. He said, the name of party candidate would be announced soon. He said, choosing a candidate for ward number 66 would not be a problem. He, however, refused to comment on the performance of Mr Puri by saying he had been duly elected obviously on the basis of his past performance. The going appears to be getting tough for the opposition SAD-BJP alliance with both the partners staking claim to the seat. In 2002 the ward had been allotted to the BJP. BJP leaders claim that it was the right of a candidate of the party to contest once again since the seat had been allotted to the party during the seat sharing arrangement in the previous elections. The party leaders have been maintaining that the result of the contest should not be a deciding factor for this time. On the other hand Akali leaders are maintaining that the area is predominantly the party’s base. They argue that the BJP candidate has performed very badly during the last elections as the candidate was a poor third in those elections. The party has been maintaining that the BJP must cooperate in the interest of the alliance. However, both parties appear to have left great scope for reconciliation. Both the parties are saying that in case they fail to reach a consensus at the local level then the issue would be referred to senior leaders whose decision would obviously be binding on everybody. |
MC meeting cancelled
Mandi Ahmedgarh, September 3 Mr Shamsunder Jain, an opposition councillor from Ward Number 10, had disappeared under mysterious circumstances on May 3 and his body was found in a canal near here the next day. As the election to this ward was scheduled to take place on September 18, the commissioner suggested the cancellation of meeting. Dr Indu, SDM, Malerkotla, and convener of the meeting, informed that the meeting was cancelled after receiving a written communication from the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Sangrur, this morning. Perusal of the letter revealed that the commission had suggested holding the meeting after September 18, when the process for electing councillors in local ward number 10 would be completed. The office of the President of the local municipal council had been vacant since March 7 when 11 councillors out of total 15 councilors had voted in favour of a no-confidence motion against the former President, Mr Rajnish Sharma. The SDM had assumed the charge of the council as Administrator. The Director, Local Bodies Department, had directed the Deputy Commissioner, Sangrur, Mr Hussan Lal, to make necessary arrangements for electing a new President. Factionalism among local councilors is well-known. Mr Sharma had been elected as President unanimously in 2002. A no-confidence motion was against him in May last year. It failed but the opposition ultimately succeeded in removing the President on March 7 this year. |

Is modeling a good profession for girls?
No profession is good or bad. It is the way you look at things. Modeling, otherwise is a very challenging and glamorous profession. A good model can earn both name and fame in a very short span. But one has to adopt a realistic and professional approach to be on top. And the job demands dedication and hardwork. How do you feel while walking on the ramp? Oh! you feel great when so many eyes watch you and appreciate the way you present yourself. Meanwhile, a lot depends on audience. If the audience is good, one feels encouraged, but if it behaves in undesirable manner, you feel like finishing the event at the earliest. Sashaying down on the ramp is a wonderful experience. What difference you find while showcasing dresses for the top designers and budding designers? Not much. I personally feel that budding designers need more of our attention. Top designers have already established themselves, the budding needs to be promoted. We should feel proud of them and encourage their creativity. — Shivani Bhakoo |
Post offices to accept payment of power bills
Ludhiana, September 3 This was stated by Ms Manisha Badal, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices (SSPO), Ludhiana Division, while addressing mediapersons here yesterday. She said the department had taken the initiative in the wake of heavy rush at PSEB receipt counters. The post offices are already accepting payments of telephone bills on behalf of BSNL and Connect. “In fact the Department of Posts is developing the post office as one point collection centre where customers can deposit all their bills in a single instance. We are also thinking in terms of authorising the postmen to collect payment of telephone and electricity bills from the doorstep of the customer.” Giving details of other value-added services being provided by the post offices, Ms Badal said people could purchase any type of insurance policies of Oriental Insurance through the post office, besides investing in UTI Mutual Funds. In addition, the services of the department for address verification of the people were being availed by BSNL and several other companies. She said yet another innovative scheme to be launched soon by the department was “direct post”. Under the scheme, unaddressed articles like letters, cards, questionnaires, pamphlets, samples and even promotional items like CDs, floppies, cassettes, coupons, posters and direct-mailers could be sent throughout the country with specific instructions on areas for distribution. The senders of “direct post” could specify the numbers and particular areas, whether in the city or outstation, in which these articles were to be distributed and the service would be undertaken at a nominal charge. Claiming that more and more people now preferred to receive money from abroad through Western Union Money Transfer from the post offices, she said even though Western Union Money Transfer had a large number of private agents, yet the people opted for post offices for reasons of security and credibility. The Western Union Money Transfer transactions from abroad had registered a significant increase of 200 per cent during the past six months. According to Ms Badal, the scheme launched earlier in the year for the sale of stamps and stationery through postmen, as well as booking of registered letters and “speed post” articles through postmen at the doorstep of the people, had proved a big success. In August alone postal stamps and stationery worth nearly Rs 4 lakh was sold through postmen and more than 6,000 registered letters and speed post articles were booked. Moreover, 22 post offices in the Ludhiana city division are being computerised which will enable the post offices to provide better and speedier service to the customers. |

Regulate steel prices, demand manufacturers
Ludhiana, September 3 A memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister 1,800 members of the United Cycle and Parts Manufacturers Association mentioned that small and medium steel consuming enterprises, that were already facing a stiff competition, were in no position to absorb any further hike in price of steel. “The reports of the Indian Steel Alliance contemplating another price hike are very disturbing. Internationally, steel prices have stabilised to around $425-$430 per tonne, whereas in India these are being unreasonably hiked. We are already facing stiff global competition with little or no margins and are in no position to absorb a further price hike.” According to the association the Indian Steel Alliance’s move to approach government to get import duty on steel raised from 5 to 20 per cent, was only a move to justify the hike in price of the local produce. The association also condemned the “efforts” of major steel producers to get anti-dumping duty re-imposed on long products and on HR coils, especially those imported from China and CIS countries. “Such moves are detrimental to the interest of steel consuming industry, which is already reeling under the impact of high input costs, including runaway increase in the prices of raw materials.” |
