City teacher to get state award
Ludhiana, September 3 She
started in 1989 with Government Model Senior Secondary School, Pheel Khana, Patiala. She was transferred to Multipurpose Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana. She was promoted principal of Government Senior Secondary School, Tharike, on July 3, 2003. Ms Kamaljit says, “at Tharike , my staff cooperated and we were able to improve the results. I encouraged children to participate in cultural activities and my students came up to the district level. Even in science exhibitions, students participated up to the National level.” Ms Kamaljit Kaur got the present posting on January 19, 2004. With the help of Pendu Vikas Sikhye Committee (PVSC) she has got constructed seven rooms and four toilets for students. She got developed a hockey ground in the school at the cost of Rs 5000 against an estimate of Rs 20,000. Ms Kamaljit is the mother of three children. Her husband, Mr Kuldip Singh is District Transport Officer (DTO). |
Teachers to stage black flag march
Ludhiana, September 3 The teachers from all over Punjab will walk the streets of Mohali carrying black flags against the commercialisation and privatisation of education by the state government. The chief spokespersons for the Morcha, Mr Piara Singh Dhillon, Mr Charan Singh Sarabha , Mr Rajinder Singh Garcha stated this in a press note. Members of four organisations, the Democratic Teachers’ Front, Govt Teachers’ Union, Adhyapak Dal, SCBC Union, under the banner of Nijikaran Virodhi Adhyapak Sangarsh Committee, Punjab, have decided to organise a Shiksha Bachao rally in front of Mini-Secretariat, here from 2 pm to 4 pm. The committee in charge of Doraha, Mr Surinder Singh, has urged teachers to join the rally. He has stated in a written statement that the teachers were protesting against the government’s decision of privatising, and commercialising and panchayatikaran of education. The posts for ETTs should be regularly advertised; those on contract should be regularised and the teachers transferred to far off places should be brought closer to their homes. SAMRALA: On Teachers’ Day September 5, Sant Kirpal Singh Sewa Panthi Senior Secondary School, Neelon, 9 km from here, will celebrate the installation ceremony of the software Euroka I.O. which will help the students to get lessons in science and Math on the TV screen, Ms A. Bakhshi, the Director of the school, said here on Saturday. Ms Bakshi also said that on Teachers’ Day the teachers with very good performance would be honoured. |

Ludhiana, September 3 Talent show at Kamla Lohtia:
The annual talent search show of Kamla Lohtia S.D. College, Daresi Road, was held at the college auditorium here today. More than 100 students participated in various contests. The Principal, Mr Deepak Kaushal, presided over the function and told the students to excel in the areas of their respective interests.
He stressed that such a participation was must in a student’s life. Students participated in singing, dancing, dramatics and fine arts competitions and impressed the audience with their skills. Dr Yograj Angrish, Prof Minakshi Garg and Prof Anil Sharma from S.D.P. College for Women, were the judges. Prof Dinesh Malik, in charge, co-curricular activities, conducted the programme. Teachers’ Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at DD Jain Memorial College for Women. The Principal, Dr (Ms) Prem Singla presided over the function. Students presented a cultural programme on this occasion which included speeches, songs and dances. Surprise games were also arranged for teachers.
Talent search competitions, including rangoli, mehndi, cooking, embroidery, fabric painting, pot-painting competitions were held. Many students unearthed their talents. The best performances were also given prizes. The programme ended with National Anthem. Welcome

Students of MA II (geography) of S.C.D. Govt College here gave a warm welcome party to the students of MA I year. The function was organised under the chairmanship of Principal D.S. Gill. Students participated in different cultural activities. Jagdeep Kaur of MA II formally welcomed the freshers and Twinkle of MA I year thanked the seniors for giving them warm welcome. The head, Department of Geography, Prof Darbara Singh, too, extended welcome to the students and
speak on various aspects of the department.
The department, being the oldest department of the north zone, has a tradition of excellence. This year Mandeep Kaur of MA II got first position and Varinderpal and Rajneet Kaur of MA I got IInd and IIIrd position, respectively, in Panjab University annual examination. Prof D.S. Gill promised to provide all kinds of facilities to the students. He said the Geography Department was one of the best departments of the college which was always for to the all-around development of the students. |

Lecture: Dr B K Jain, Head of the Pediatrics Department, DMC, delivered a lecture on Dietary Habits and Obesity at Tagore Public School. Dr Jain highlighted the various causes of obesity. According to him improper dietary habits, stressful life, lack of physical exercise, T V and computers were the main causes of obesity. He gave a detailed description of the diseases related to obesity.He gave tips to tackle these problems and to improve dietary habits. Road, Ludhiana. The college would be set up in an area of 8 acres. The foundation stone of the college will be laid by Mr Shamsher Singh Dullo, Presidentof the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, on September 5.The college building will be constructed within six months at an estimated cost of Rs 20 crore. The college will offer B,Ed., B.Sc. (nursing) and degree courses. B.Sc. nursing course is proposed to be affiliated with a Canadian university. . A 200 bedded hospital will also come up at the proposed site. The foundation laying ceremony of Green Land College will be followed by the prize distribution function for Green Land School students. September 3 The Bench headed by Ms Priya Sood, Chairperson, Sub-divisional Legal Services Committee, disposed of 25 cases, out of 40 cases placed before her. Another Bench headed by Mr K.K. Goyal, Civil Judge, Junior Division, settled 22 cases out of 41. Mr Arvind Markan, Assistant District Attorney, Legal Services Authority, said that the members of Lok Adalat and of Khanna Bar Association participated in the Lok Adalat. |
Importance of eye donation
Ludhiana, September 3 The minister said the Health Department would launch an awareness drive to promote eye donation in the state so that the blind people could regain their sight. The help of social personalities and NGOs active in this field would be sought, he added. Mr Dogra, appreciating the contribution of Punarjot Eye Bank in educating the people to go in for such a sacred service, said eye donation was the biggest gift we could offer to our fellow brethren. He said the awareness level had increased with the involvement of NGOs. Referring to steps taken to improve the health facilities in Punjab, the Minister claimed that a World Bank project of Rs 460 crore had been launched to revamp 157 hospitals in the state. A Balri Rakshak Yojana has been launched to check the declining sex ratio. He said that the government had also given its nod for the recruitment of more than 1374 doctors and 2500 para-medical officials to improve the functioning of hospitals. Dr Dogra said that in the war against the blindness, the state had very strong allies who were arranging and sponsoring eye camps for the poor and needy patients in remote areas of Punjab. He thanked Mr H.K. Ahuja, Mr Varinder Jain (Malerkotla), Baba Ramji Ghawaddi, Mr Deepak Arora, Mr Happy Joshi, Mr Gurdeep Singh Grewal, Nishkam Sewa Ashram, Mr Varinder Chawla (Kidwai Nagar), for creating awareness about blindness. Ms Tanuja Joshi, president, Eye Bank Association of India, said that every third blind person in the world was an Indian. She added that 80 per cent of the blindness in India was reversible. There were 11 lakh people who had lost their sight to corneal diseases and most of these were children and young adults. She said that the achievements of the Punarjot Eye Bank for the past 12 years were commendable. |
KVM, Sarswati School win
Ludhiana, September 3 In the match played at the SDP College for Women grounds, Kundan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School thrashed Sanatan Vidya Mandir School by 72 runs. Batting first, KVM School made 107 runs for the loss of four wickets in the allotted 16 overs. The main scorers were Akhil Aggarwal and Salil Sharma who contributed 29 and 22 runs, respectively. For Sanatan Vidya Mandir School, Chtean and Shallu grabbed two wickets each conceding 20 and 18 runs, respectively. In reply, SVM School’s innings folded at 35 runs in eight overs. The successful bowlers for KVM School were Abhijit, Parth and Jatinjit. Abhijit chipped in with three wickets for nine runs, while Parth and Jatinjit claimed two wickets each for 10 and 6 runs, respectively. In the second match, played at Government Model Senior Secondary School grounds, PAU, Saraswati Modren School, Partap Singh Wala, defeated Bhartiya Vidya Mandir School by two wickets. Sarswati School won the toss and put BVM to bat. In 20 overs, BVM made 100 runs for the loss of seven wickets. Sunny Pandey remained unbeaten on 45 which came off 29 deliveries, while Rajit scored 21 in 18 balls. For Saraswati School, Karan took three wickets for 22 runs, while Gaurav took two wickets for 17 runs. Saraswati School achieved the target losing eight wickets after 17.4 overs. Nikhil made 23, followed by Rahul who scored 39 runs. Sunny Pandey took three wickets for 18 runs, while Karan grabbed two for 23 runs. |
Everest school team wins first match
Ludhiana, September 3 In the under-19 years category Everest Public School lost the first set tamely at 5-15. However, in the next set, hosts bounced back and won it 15-12. They maintained the tempo and wrapped up the match quite easily at 15-4. In the boys section (u-19), however, Everest Public School fought a spirited battle against Pothohar School before going down in straight sets 7-15 and 8-10. In other matches (u-16) , Ryan International School drubbed HVM School 15-4 and 15-1 while Dyal Public School overcame Nankana Sahib Public School 15-7, 13-15 and 15-4 and Nankana Public School defeated HVM School 15-11, 11-15 and 15-5. In the girls section, Evening Christian Public School beat Kalgidhar School 9-15, 15-1 and 15-4 while Sargodha Public School outplayed Kalgidhar Public School 15-1 and 15-3. PAU school enter semis
Ludhiana, September 3 PAU School lads, batting first set a target of 140 runs before their opponents. They scored 139 runs for the loss of five wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. Yovan top scored with 22 runs, followed by Surinder Mohan who made 20 while Rahul contributed 12 runs. For Saraswati School, Kanav took two wickets for 16 runs while Rohan and Manjeet claimed one wicket each conceding 22 runs each. In reply, Saraswati Modern School could muster only 73 runs in 18 overs. Abhilash and Rohan made 12 and 6 runs, respectively. Sarabjeet, Abhishek and Akshay Kumar grabbed two wickets each for the winners. |
