Roadways staff stop private buses

Agitated and irritated employees of the Punjab Roadways today stopped some of the illegally plying buses on various routes in Punjab. The employees said it was because of these illegally plying buses that the Punjab Roadways was running into losses.

Act against tipsy Patwari, says SDM
Mandi Ahmedgarh, August 25
The SDM, Malerkotla, has forwarded a case seeking disciplinary action against a Patwari, who was found drunk on duty by the local revenue authorities. The revenue officer has acted on the complaints of farmers and panchayat of Kanganwal village, where he was posted.

5 held for kidnapping youth
Ludhiana, August 25
Close on the heels of the murder of a youth allegedly by four persons belonging to well-settled families, a youth was allegedly kidnapped and beaten because of an old rivalry between two groups of youths over their assertiveness in the Punjab Mata Nagar area.

Residents protest against lack of civic amenities
Ludhiana, August 25
Sick of “lackadaisical” attitude of the authorities of the Ludhiana Improvement Trust, the residents of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, Block-E, today staged a dharna outside the office of the LIT chairman to protest against lack of civic amenities and mushrooming of slums around the residential area.

Two booked for assault
Jagraon, August 25
Ajit Singh Bhola and Amarjit Kaur of Talwandi Rai allegedly assaulted Kulwinder Singh of their village after entering his house with sharp-edged weapons. The injured has been admitted to the hospital. The Raikot police has registered a case under Sections 452, 323, 324, 506, 34, IPC.

Private college teachers observe strike
Doraha, August 25
Teachers of private aided colleges in the district observed “Poll Manifesto Reminder Day” today following a call given by the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union. A two-hour strike from 12 noon was organised by the union members to press the government to implement their long-pending demands.

Teej was celebrated with great fervour at the Government College for Women here today. The college wore a festive look with teachers and students attired in traditional tikka, bangles and phulkari. Girls sang songs of sawan and enjoyed swings.

Raikot zone win kabaddi title
Ludhiana, August 25
Gujjarwal and Raikot zones emerged champions in kabaddi u-17 and u-19 years categories, respectively, in the Ludhiana Schools Inter-Zonal Tournament for girls which concluded today. Mr Rupinder Singh Ravi, general secretary of the tournament committee, was the chief guest today.

Cricket trials postponed

Trials to select the Ludhiana probables for the Punjab State Inter-District Tournament for the Katoch Shield scheduled to be held here at the Arya College for Boys ground on August 27 have been postponed, according to Mr Vinod Chitkara, honorary general secretary, Ludhiana District Cricket Association.
