Woman loses kidneys, seeks help
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 26
Rakesh Kumar has sold off all he had so he could ease the pain of his suffering wife Ritu. Having lost both her kidneys, Ritu increasingly feels she is a burden on Rakesh and their two children who have not eaten decent food for days.

For the couple, the nightmare began few months ago when PGI experts tested Ritu for repeated gastric problems. “I used to vomit occasionally and vomiting would often be accompanied with pain. I took the problem casually but I still took medicines. I don’t know what happened, why the problem continued and I decided to show it to a doctor in the PGI. Ultrasound confirmed the loss of both kidneys,” said Ritu who has nowhere to go.

But she is overwhelmed by the support Rakesh has given her. She tells, “He has sold off all his belongings, even utensils of the house. We have already spent Rs 2 lakh on the treatment and Rakesh is heavily in debt. I don’t know how we will survive like this. Children are also growing weaker by the day. I have no money to feed them.”

The worst problem which Rakesh is facing is lack of a kidney donor for his wife. “My kidney has not matched. I have no help and I don’t understand where to go for a kidney. I am now at the mercy of donors. I cannot get her dialysis done anymore and she starts feeling breathless after every week,” Rakesh said, pleading incessantly for help.

Chandigarh, July 26
The monsoon gives caretakers of cricket ground more than a month to prepare the outfield with a fresh green look. During monsoons, the caretakers sweat and toil in the intense humidity and prepare the ground for the new cricket season which starts after the rains.

“The soggy conditions help to revitalise these tracks as well as the outfield as the grass grows, said Harish Sharma, coach at the Sector 16 cricket stadium, here. Utilising these conditions, the stadium, has been ready to conduct any kind of domestic or international level match, added Sharma.

However, installation of nets for practice and work on water tank for the sprinkle system are still pending as the proposal has been in the pipeline with the Engineering Department of Chandigarh. “We have sent a proposal to the department concerned and after the clearance the system will get ready within two months”, said Mr. Sharma. There was a proposal to erect two-storey structure on the old gymnasium building in which media box and a restaurant would come up, he said.

The JP Attrey Tournament, an annual feature in which more than 10 teams of different states participate, will start in the third week of September at the stadium.

“We are also expecting to get some Ranji matches along with All-India under-19 tournament, conducted by the BCCI, in the coming season”, hoped Mr Sharma.

SAI draws flak over transfer of coaches
G.S. Paul
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 26
Infrastructure worth crores of rupees may get damaged due to unplanned transfers of as many as nine coaches of Panjab University. One of the coaches is Gurcharanjit Singh, whose trainee Puneet Rana has been selected recently to represent Indian universities’ contingent in the World University Games scheduled to be held at Izmir (Turkey) from August 11 to 21.

Surinder Mahajan’s, a badminton coach, contributions also cannot be ignored. The university has imported two howa courts for badminton apart from three wooden courts to train the players who have brought laurels to the university on national and international levels. Similarly, Bhupinder Singh (football), KDS Nagra (weightlifting), P.P. Singh (judo), Gurinder Kaur (hockey), Sanjeev Sharma(kho-kho), Narinder (handball) and Sukhwinder Singh (athletics) also have good results to show.

In fact this was the biggest ever reshuffle of the coaches by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in two decades, which has invited a lot of flak from the sports fraternity.

However, PU is not alone in facing the mass transfers of coaches, majority of SAI coaches in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, J&K and Chandigarh have also been transferred to various state coaching centers, SAI training centres or centers being run at schools and colleges in the region. The worst hit apparently is the PU, where as many as nine serving coaches had to face unplanned transfers.

“We had asked SAI to provide us two additional coaches for cricket and lawn tennis, instead they have ordered the transfer of the existing lot with no substitution. Crores of rupees have already been spent on generating the infrastructure but with these new orders the entire effort will come to a naught now,” rued Prof D.S. Toor, director of the PU sports campus.

The SAI corporate office, New Delhi, had ordered the transfer of coaches on July 5. In all 741 coaches have been transferred and 25 are from Chandigarh.

In fact, the PU sports director had earlier written to the Director-General , SAI, and a copy was sent to the Regional Director, SAI, Sonepat, highlighting the achievements of the coaches and asking them not to transfer them or at least provide a replacement in case of transfers.

“I am not averse to the idea of transfer but there has to be a system. I relieved the coaches with effect from July 20 but till date there is no replacement,” said Professor Toor.
