Allegations rife over hike in prices of flats

Ludhiana, June 30
After allegations of irregularities in allotting tenders in city centre project, the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) is once again in the eye of a storm over raising of price of MIG flats in Rishi Nagar and remitting of non-construction charges levied against some residents.

Monsoon hits Punjab
Ludhiana, June 30
The monsoon has hit Punjab. The normal onset of monsoon in Punjab is around first week of July, but this year the onset was early and northern limit of monsoon covered the entire state on June 29, according to Dr L.S. Brar, Professor and head of the Department of Agronomy-agrometereology of Punjab Agricultural University. Due to the high temperature prevailing during the last week, low pressure area was developed in the North-Western India and it speeded up monsoon activity in these regions.

Most of the parents of the schoolchildren and hiring people to do the “job work” for their children. With summer vacations in most of the schools about to come to an end, the parents have started feeling the load of the pending vacation homework of their wards.

Exonerated, yet jailed
Jagraon, June 30
The release of Balwinder Singh, alias Binder, and Gurpreet Singh, both of Butahari village, on bail by the Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate Jagraon, Ms Jitender Walia, in a criminal case has brought to light serious lapses on the part of the Punjab police and its functioning.

Bus overturns, 18 hurt
Jagraon, June 30
A Punjab Roadways bus overturned on the Jagraon-Ludhiana G.T. road yesterday in which 18 passengers were injured. Two of the injured are serious and had been shifted to a hospital in Ludhiana while others were discharged after providing first-aid.

Farmers demand restoration of free power
Ludhiana, June 30
Hundreds of farmers today staged a demonstration at Mini Secretariat here. They were demanding scrapping of loans of the debt-ridden farmers and the restoration of free power to the tubewells. The demonstration was jointly organised by five Leftist kisan organisations which included Kul Hind Kirti Kisan Sabha, Jamhoori Kisan Sabha Punjab, BKU Ekta (Sidhupur), Punjab Kisan Sabha and Punjab Khethri Kisan Vikas Front. The speakers at the convention pointed out that the plight of farmers was the worst in Punjab.

First IT help centre opens in city

Mr SJS Pall, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, today inaugurated the first ‘aayakar sahayata kendra’ (help centre) at United Cycle Parts Manufactures Association office building near Campa Cola Chowk on Gill Road here.
