Meaningful verses need of the hour, says Nikku
Lovleen Bains

Inderjit Nikku
Inderjit Nikku

Doraha, June 30
Renowned Punjabi singer Inderjit Nikku, who is all set to release his new album in the coming days, is determined to present it as a masterpiece of meaningful verses replete with poetical overtones and thoughtful expression.

Strongly opposed to “remixes”, he prefers natural talent carrying weighty ideas. Sharing his views on his upcoming cassette, the name of which has been still undecided , he says. “ The incorporation of a song written by my favourite singer Gurdas Mann will add flavour of its own to it”.

Inderjit Nikku seems to make no compromises when the question of providing quality songs and authentic picturisation is concerned. Negating the common version of the singers regarding their ignorance about objectionable videos, he says,” This is sheer duplicity. Why should the singers pose to be unaware of the video’s that mar their own image as a singer ?

As we are fully known to the story, we can at least make efforts to minimise the nudity that perverts our psyche and make us look down upon our rich Punjabi cultural heritage. The singers should rather raise collective voice against such picturisations that is lowering the self-esteem of Punjabis.

From a minor T.V Star, Nikku rose to be a popular singer. Till none his 23 cassettes have been released in which 11 have been his individual contribution while 12 of them are in joint collaboration with other singers. Two of his cassettes “Nasebo Chete Kardi Aa” and “Panjeban Wali” are close to his heart.

His songs “Chinda Khatra Soniya,” “Jattan De Munde”, “Jan Jan Da Khatra,” “Sunn Ve Rabba” and others have won universal acclaim. Associated presently with Rupinder Singh Ruby, Nachattar Gill, Harbhajan Shera, Jaspinder Narula, Master Salim, Nikku is confident of his future endeavours.

Never had his father, Mr Budh Singh, a factory worker, realised that his son shall rose to be a popular figure by dint of his melodious voice.

Anti-anaemia campaign by IMA from July 1
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, June 30
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) will launch an Anaemia-Free India Campaign on Doctors’ Day — July 1 — all over the country.
According to Dr Gursharan Singh, national vice-president, the findings of the recent DLHS-RCH survey jointly conducted by the Ministry of Health, the Family Welfare and the Department of Women and Child Development were mind-boggling.

It showed a very high prevalence of anaemia in pre-school children, adolescent girls and pregnant women, to the tune of over 90 per cent in all these vulnerable groups.

Field experiences of the ICMR and the East Delhi Gyanecologist Forum also shared the same concern.

Anaemia is a silent epidemic that spoils children’s growth and makes them stunted and affecting their school performance. Anaemia is the biggest cause of school dropouts in India and caused economic loss to the country to the tune of 4-5 per cent of the GDP i.e. billions of dollars.

In contrast, in developed countries like the USA, less than 3 per cent children and hardly any adolescent is anemic.

The IMA has started creating nationwide awareness to sensitise doctor/nurses/paramedics and aims to sensitise teachers, ICDS workers and NGOs to take their active support and participation.

But to make India anaemia-free, the body needs to pool resources to bring about lasting noticeable change at grass-roots level.

“It is our endeavour to carry out sustained effort to eliminate anaemia from the country. The IMA is giving a national call — ‘Let us make India anemia-free’ — on the Doctors’ Day i.e. July 1. The all-India launch of the programme will be through all 1,700 IMA branches to create nationwide awareness to root out anemia,” he said.

The main components of this launch:

1. Public awareness programmes through rallies and walks involving various section of the society like teachers, social workers, paramedics, personalities and health conscious citizens

2. Involvement of NGOs

3. Posters/hoardings at prominent places

4. Anaemia detection camps

5. Awareness programme in schools/colleges/community

6. TV/radio talks

7. Articles to local dailies/articles in IMA bulletin

8. Joint meetings of doctors/nurses/teachers/ICDs staff/NGO at each IMA branch
