Self-esteem makes kids perform better, parents told
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, June 24
Parents should find something to praise children. A child who feels good about himself, performs better. Self-esteem is the core element of inspiring a child to deliver peak performance. This was stated by Dr Gurmeet Kaur Miglani, Director, Gee’s Finishing School, during a seminar on “How to make your child a winner” at Sutlej Club here yesterday.

Dr Miglani advised parents not to compare children with others as it brought out negative feelings giving rise to insecurities, fears and complexes. For developing positive behaviour, they should be given regular hugs, smiles, pat on shoulder and sweet words. Fathers played an important role in shaping children’s personality. They should teach them physical competence and impart confidence.

At the end of the seminar, there was a question-answer session and a discussion by the audience. Everyone was of the opinion that children were overloaded with lots of information through television, computers, Internet, etc. Parents should spend more quality time with children and encourage them to communicate more so that they don’t feel bottled up.

Children should be discouraged from watching television for a long time. Instead they should be encouraged to play outdoor games. Games help in inculcating qualities like confidence, quick decisions, team spirit, discipline, etc.
