Situation under control, says Ramdoss
New Delhi, May 5 Authorities in the hospitals confirmed that in the last week four persons died of the disease, which could cause brain damage and learning disabilities. The head of Hospital Administration, Delhi Government, Dr. J.N. Banwalikar, said, “we have decided that all people falling in the highly susceptible group, such as hospital staff in direct contact with the patients will be vaccinated. Patients’ relatives will be given tablets.” He said that all hospitals in the Capital have been asked to set aside at least 10 beds for meningococcal meningitis patients. The authorities have banned vendors from selling cut fruits and vegetables. Patients suffering from the fatal disease came to light last week. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Delhi hospitals recorded six new cases, most of them from the congested area of the Walled City. The medical experts are of the view that the government should declare the meningitis as an epidemic. However, the NCT government of Delhi has yet not declared it an epidemic. The authorities concerned claim that the situation is under control. There is better awareness about the disease, better availability of drugs and the government has acted timely. If it is declared an epidemic, the government has to make a lot of arrangement for schoolchildren and affected groups. The Union Health Minister, Mr Anbumani Ramdoss, said in Parliament, “we have taken steps to prevent and cure the disease. The situation is under control and there is no cause for panic at this point of time.” The meningitis is caused by the Neisseria meningitis bacteria serotype A. The last outbreak of the disease was in 1985 when 6000 cases and 800 deaths were reported from different parts of the country. |
Asthma helpline at Metro Centre
Noida, May 5 In the USA, approximately one lakh people die annually from asthma. According to Dr Deepak Talwar, chairman of Metro Centre for Respiratory Diseases Hospital, “Today effective treatment options are available and it is our endeavour to ensure that the asthmatic patients get a good control of their disease.” According to Dr Deepak Talwar, the centre has studied 1180 new asthmatic patients attending the asthma camps between May 2000 and April 2005. “We also conducted 50 continuous medical education programmes (CMEs) for general physicians, paediatricians and family physicians, emphasising that asthma is a chronic disease, which needs spirometry for diagnosis, peak flow for monitoring and inhaled medication for treatment in North India,” he said. Asthma camps were also organised for patients where they were educated on the same lines. Our patients, who had constant follow-up for nearly three years and above, showed that repeated programmes and activities involving patients had improved compliance to nearly 50 per cent. In view of these findings, a ‘Metro Breath Club’ was launched. The members of this club will be given 25 per cent discount on all asthma-related expenses in the hospital as OPD consultation, indoor admissions and investigations. These patients will also have the benefits of bi-monthly educational programmes related to asthma, to be organised by the centre, Dr Talwar informed. Our asthmatic members would also have an opportunity to participate in international programmers and trials for which Metro Hospital is among the few institutes recognised in India, he said. An ‘Asthma helpline’ has been established, where experts including Dr Talwar himself will be available. This facility is open to patients of Faridabad, South Delhi, East Delhi and Meerut at the respective Metro Hospitals, where branches of Metro Centre for Respiratory Diseases exist with its full-time respiratory faculty. Free registration for this club will begin at Lajpat Nagar (May 7) and Meerut (May 8). Meanwhile, 367 persons turned up for the free check-up on the World Asthma Day camp, organised by the Metro Hospital and Heart Institute, Noida, recently. Of these, 345 persons were diagnosed as asthma patients. As many as 245 patients, who enrolled as life members of the ‘Metro Breath Club’, will be entitled to facilities like 24-hours helpline, bi-monthly educational programme on asthma, 25 per cent and discount in all asthma-related expenses. |
Cong imposing economic burden on citizens: BJP
New Delhi, May 5 Ms Anita Arya accused the Congress-led Delhi Government of imposing economic burdens on the citizens. She said now the government was bent upon ruining the traders by implementing VAT arbitrarily. Due to VAT, the articles of daily use have become costly by about 30 per cent, making the traders shift their business to the neighbouring states, she alleged. The general secretary of Delhi BJP, Mr Pawan Sharma, accused the Sheila government of “forgetting all democratic Values” and behaving in a despotic and anti-people manner. Now, the government is not allowing even the representatives of the public to present their views in the Legislative Assembly. In such a condition, he asked where should the people go for the ventilation of their grievances. Atrocities on the people shall continue till the Sheila government remains in power, he said. The people will get relief only when the Sheila government is removed from power, he said. The secretary of Delhi BJP, Mr Yogendra Chandoliya, said that the life of the citizens of the Capital had become difficult due to new taxes, hike in the rate of power and water, and now by the adverse affect of VAT. The price rise and corruption in the Capital are at its climax, he added. The articles of general use are beyond the reach of the people. Moreover, the public facilities are decreasing. In such a situation, the government has no moral right to continue in power even for a single day, he said. |
DCP summoned in petition seeking removal of encroachment
New Delhi, May 5 Chief Justice B. C. Patel and Justice S. K. Kaul directed Additional DCP, SHO, Defence Colony and a Sub-Inspector to be present to explain the state of affairs on May 11 otherwise the court would take coercive measures. The association said the land worth more than Rs 45 crore was meant for the construction of group housing flats for the members, but due to some reasons the land was lying vacant. In the course of time, it was encroached upon by the scrap dealers. Now the land has been grabbed by the land mafia, who have raised unauthorised construction in violation of the building bylaws. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the Municipal Corporation
of Delhi (MCD) have turned a blind eye to the illegal constructions, said the petition. The Delhi Vidyut Board had also given electricity connection to the residents violating the norms. ‘’This is causing undue hardship and inconvenience to the residents, who are entitled to lead a peaceful
and healthy life in a congenial environment. It is a clear violation of Article 21 of the Constitution,’’ said the petition. The association prayed that the unauthorised occupation should be removed and given to the rightful owners for the construction of a housing society. |
3 power towers uprooted, Noida sectors plunge into darkness
Noida/Greater Noida, May 5 The storm has also caused considerable loss to the farmers. Their harvested wheat crop, which has not been fully stored indoors, was damaged by rain and wind. Even the wheat straw, where thrashing operations had been completed, was blown away by the strong winds. The damage caused by the storm to the power system will at least take a week to repair, said B. B. Singh, the General Manager, UP Power Corporation, Noida. The collapse of the power towers yesterday has affected electric supply in about 40 per cent of the Noida and Greater Noida areas. This has also seriously affected water supply in the town. The tower no 29, 30, 31 of 132 KV lines to Bhangel were suddenly uprooted under the impact of the storm last night, resulting in snapping of power supply in five feeders out of eight. The power supply to Noida sectors 29, 38, 39, 44, 47 and 50 has been stopped. The lines were connected with some other lines as temporary measure and power restored to VIP sectors. As a result of the power crisis, six rainy-wells, supplying potable water to the city, could not be run to the optimum level. The rainy-wells no 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 built along the Yamuna bank could not be supplied enough power to run them fully with the result water supply has also been seriously affected in the area including Bhangel. |
No respite from power cuts for Noida residents
Noida, May 5 According to the Chairman and Managing Director of the UP Power Corporation, Deepak Singhal, and the Chairman of the Noida Authority, Mr Dev Dutt, the UP Power Corporation, which has drawn up plans in a big way for solving the power shortage problem in the state, will receive Rs 2,200 crore from the Centre for supplying power to the rural areas. While Rs 1,000 crore under APDRY plan has been earmarked for the improvement of electrification in the urban areas, Rs 35 crore for Ghaziabad and Rs 65 crore for Noida have been made available by the state government to improve the power generation and infrastructure in the area. In next three years, 30,000 villages in the state will be electrified. Besides repairing and improving some sick powerhouses, a number of new power projects have also been planned for the next couple of years. The UP Power Corporation was generating 2,500 MW of power every month, but the demand in the state was for 7,000 MW, thus leaving a gap of 4,500 MW. According to sources, three new sub-stations are being set up in Noida. Private investment in power sector is also on cards, Mr Singhal said. Anupara C Project of 1000 MW will be ready within the next two years and Roja plant, which is lying closed, will be revived to generate 600 MW. The Tatas are likely to set up two power plants of 500 MW capacity each in Bulandshahr and Allahabad. During 2005-06, Rihand Ganga project will supply 773 MW while Teri Hydel Project will supply 392 MW. Another 1,000 MW power is likely to be supplied by ONGC to UPPC. The UPPC, which is losing Rs 800 crore annually on power thefts, has decided to introduce ABC technology and high-voltage density system (HVDM), which will make power thefts impossible. With the introduction of new technology, those hooking power could get electrocuted, Mr Singhal warned. The corporation and the Noida Authority have for the first time have decided to collaborate for improving the power supply in the area. The Chairman of the UP Power Corporation, however, said there will be no respite till Pali Powerhouse is commissioned in July. |
