SALARIES: Thousands of teachers have not been paid salaries for the past four months due to the non-allotment of budget by the Finance Department for Plan posts. Mr S.S. Ajnala, Secretary, Government Teachers Union, said this here on Wednesday.

ARRESTED: The police has arrested Chaman Lal of Dahkla village for allegedly carrying 17 kg of poppy husk in a bag. He was arrested from Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar. A case has been registered under the NDPS Act.

Sangrur
BUDGET PASSED: The local Zila Parishad has passed budget estimates of Rs 8.07 crore for 2005-06. The meeting was held under the presidentship of Sham Singh Makror, Chairman, Zila Parishad. The parishad also passed budgets for 12 block samitis of the district. A sum of Rs 1.05 crore was released for various development works in villages.

CAMP: The Agriculture Technology Management Agency, the District Rural Development Agency and the Welfare Department here on Tuesday organised an awareness camp for the rural women. More than 1,000 women belonging to about 250 self-help groups participated in the camp. Mr Husan Lal, Deputy Commissioner, was the chief guest. Ms Nandita Bakshi, secretary, Bisnouli Sarvodaya Gramodyog Seva Sanstha, an NGO, presided over the function.

One arrested
: A Pinjore resident Shiv Pankaj has been arrested by the police for his involvement in a hit and run case. The man has been arrested on the complaint of Mr Trilok Singh, a resident of Pinjore. The complainant had alleged that a scooterist had hit his mother Mrs Shakintla, while was crossing the road on March 19. The suspect today produced before a court and was granted bail.

ELECTED: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Jagadhri District Courts Bar Association: president — Mr B.S. Chauhan; senior vice-president — Mr Sanjeev Gupta; vice-president — Mr Bhupinder Singh; general secretary — Mr Navneet Kaushal; and cashier — Mr Ram Karan.

CITIZENS’ CHARTER: From now onwards department heads will have to fix time daily to meet members of the public. The district administration will implement the Citizens’ Charter and inter-departmental communication would be streamlined. This was stated by Mr R.K. Rao, Deputy Commissioner, during his first interaction with mediapersons here on Wednesday.

ARRESTED: The district police has arrested 53 persons under the Gambling Act during a special drive which started on March 18. The SP, Dr Suman Manjari, said a drive had also been launched to check motorists who were driving without proper documents.
