UT set to launch ‘Apni beti, Apna dhan’ scheme
Chandigarh, March 24
For improving the status of the girl child in the families living below poverty line in the city, the Chandigarh Administration has chalked out “Apni Beti Apna Dhan Scheme-2005” under which Rs 5000 shall be deposited in the name of the girl child on her birth in the children career plan, which will be payable after the girl completes the age of 18 years.

Education board to bar private examinees

The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) proposes to bar students from appearing as private candidates in the matriculation and senior secondary examinations. Nearly 1.35 lakh students will be affected if the proposal is cleared.

Degrees conferred on 775

As many as 775 students were awarded degrees at the 33rd annual convocation of MCM DAV College, Sector-36, here today. Sixteen students were conferred their post-graduate degrees in Hindi, 36 in B.Com. (Honours), 35 in B.Com., 64 in B.Sc. (Vocational), 52 in B.Sc. (non-medical) and 50 in B.Sc. (medical).

Exams over, students heave sigh of relief

Class X students, appearing for the Central Board of Secondary Education, today heaved a sigh of relief with their Board examinations concluding with the science and technology paper. They emerged from the examination centres smiling, happy that the burden of the boards was off their shoulders.

Anticipatory bail plea of chemist rejected
Panchkula, March 24
The anticipatory bail application of chemist C.P. Sharma was rejected by a local court today. Sharma, who is accused of misbehaving with the Medical Superintendent of General Hospital here, had filed for an anticipatory bail earlier this week. He has been booked under various criminal charges by the local police.

Gracy Singh graces Rose Garden
The Rose Garden in Sector 16 has never seen a gathering as thick as it saw today. Making a beeline for a glimpse of actress Gracy Singh were hundreds of visitors who stayed put on the site until the song sequence being shot was over and done with. Gracy Singh has been in the city for a day to shoot for the film “Chanchal” which also stars, among others, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Bindu.

Rallies mark World TB Day
Mohali, March 24
A rally was organised by officials of the Health Department in connection with the World TB Day here today. The rally, which started from the Primary Health Centre, Phase III B 1, was flagged off by Dr Sunalini Suri, SMO, in charge of the Civil Hospital. Nearly 50 students of Mata Sahib Kaur Institute of  Nursing took part in the rally which culminated at Gurdwara Amb Sahib in Phase VIII.

Indo-Pak wrestling meet on March 26

Mohali, March 24
The bonhomie between India and Pakistan continues and now it’s time for wrestlers of the two nations to wrestle with each other. An Indo-Pak wrestling championship will be held on March 26 at Singhpura village, near Kurali, 15 km from here. In the contest, eight and 12 bouts will be held for the international championship and national championship, respectively. All the bouts will be held on mat, set up on the ground of the local gurdwara. These bouts will be conducted under international rules.
