India surrender lead to draw with France
M.S. Unnikrishnan

New Delhi, December 28
India seemed to have effectively sewed up the match when they took a 3-0 lead, but then inexplicably surrendered the advantage to enable France to fight back and draw the second hockey Test 3-3 at the Shivaji Stadium here today. After their humiliating 1-3 defeat in the first Test yesterday, India were determined to prove their worth, and they got on the right track when Arjun Halappa struck two fine goals in the space of 16 minutes as the hosts led 2-0 at the interval. India were on a roll when Tushar Khandekar played a brilliant solo to add the third goal three minutes in to the second half.

And then the slump began, as the French team mounted pressure and their brilliant penalty corner specialist Frederic Soyez hit the target with unfailing regularity to convert three of their five penalty corners to notch up a hat-trick and draw level.

India were thus forced to split honours from a winning position, and the hosts bolted into the dressing room, with their heads bent, for the second day running. IHF secretary general Jyoti Kumaran also did not take the risk of coming down to the field to distribute the prizes.

The captains of the teams were summoned to the VIP box to be presented with the trophies. France thus won five of the seven matches they played during their Indian tour. Their only defeat was against Indian Airlines in an exhibition match by 1-2 at the Shivaji Stadium before the Test series.

There was indeed a marked improvement in the performance of the Indian players today. They dominated the show in the first half, and with Arjun Halappa and Tushar Khandkar making their moves fast and furious, France, for once, found themselves on the backfoot. They were forced to play second fiddle, and an Indian victory looked imminent.

Arjun Halappa opened the floodgates in the ninth minute when his piercing shot ripped through the side netting and went out. French umpire Xavier Fenaert did not whistle for a goal instantaneously, thinking that the ball had gone wide. But the host players protested and the visiting umpire consulted his Indian counterpart Suresh Bhatia before awarding a goal (1-0).

India earned their first penalty corner in the 13th minute, but wasted it. In the 27th minute, Deepak Thakur took possession of the ball in the middle and ran down to take a rasping shot which came of French custodian Julien Thamin.

Arjun Halappa pounced on the rebound to blast it back into the goal (2-0). Halappa was unlucky to miss his hat-trick three minutes before the break as his poweful hit struck the post.

On resumption, Tushar Khandkar capped a fine move with a blinding shot which gave no chance to the French custodian (3-0). And then the French got into their scoring act, with captain Antoine Moreau playing a stellar role to crack the defence of India and create openings. They had squandered a penalty corner in the 29th minute of the first half, and flunked the second too in the sixth minute after resumption. But the second was quickly followed by the third, and this time, Frederic Soyez’s carpet drive completely foxed Indian goalie G. Kuttappa.

Frederic resorted to drag flicks off the fourth and fifth penalty corners to put the ball in the goal with remarkable ease and composure. Though India had a chance to get ahead five minutes before full time when they earned their second penalty corner, they failed in their task as Sandeep Singh was resting on the bench and others did not know how to score off a short corner. An interesting aspect of the match was that while the French made the most of the rolling substitions, India did not know how to make use of this facility.

ICC, FIFA express condolences

London, December 28
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has expressed deep sympathy to the people of India, Sri Lanka and other countries affected by the devastating impact of Sunday’s tsunamis and said it would help in the relief efforts.

“On behalf of the ICC, I pass on our deepest sympathy to the people of the region whose lives have been devastated by the earthquake,” council President Ehsan Mani said.

“The impact of the earthquake and tsunamis has been disastrous throughout the region and it will have a tragic impact on millions of lives,” he said.

“Sport will be the last thing on the minds of those affected by the earthquake, but over the coming days, we will be speaking to the sporting authorities from India and Sri Lanka to find out how we can help the relief efforts,” he said.

Sri Lanka had announced that there would be no competitive cricket in the island during the five-day period of national mourning. The Sri Lankan cricket team was currently touring New Zealand and its match scheduled for tomorrow had been postponed to January 11.

The dates of the other fixtures in the series remained unchanged.

ZURICH: The head of world soccer’s governing body sent his condolences to countries around the Indian Ocean devastated by tidal waves.

“My thoughts and prayers are dwelling today on the men, women and children who perished in this disaster and the multitude of families who are suffering untold grief and bereavement,” FIFA President Joseph Blatter said on Monday.

He said in letters to the presidents of the football associations of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, Maldives, Malaysia and Myanmar that he learned of the catastrophe “with deep shock and dismay.”

“On behalf of the entire FIFA family, I would like to convey our deepest condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy and to wish your people much strength and courage at this harrowing time,” Blatter said.

Murali narrowly missed tsunami

Sydney, December 28
Sri Lankan spinner great Muttiah Muralitharan declared himself “lucky to be alive” after narrowly missing one of the tsunamis that killed 11,000 people in his home country, The Sydney Morning Herald reported today.

Muralitharan, recovering from shoulder surgery in Sri Lanka while his team-mates tour New Zealand, told the newspaper that he had spent the weekend in the southern coastal city of Galle handing out cricket bats to underprivileged children with his manager Kushil Gunasekera.

Just minutes after Muralitharan drove out of the city, Galle was devastated by tidal waves triggered by a massive undersea earthquake thousands of kilometres away in Indonesia.

Sri Lanka was the worst hit of several nations stricken by the waves, with nearly 11,000 dead, many missing and hundreds of thousands left homeless.

“I missed the wave by 20 minutes,” Muralitharan was quoted as telling the newspaper.

“I had only just left Galle, so I am very lucky to be alive,” he said.

“The wave was over 20 feet high and it went two kilometres inland (more than a mile)”, he said.

“A lot of our cricketers are from there and we do not know how their families are. My manager barely survived. His house is gone,” he said.

“Galle is totally under water and a lot of people are missing or dead. There are people everywhere screaming,” he said.

Team manager Brendan Kuruppu, speaking in Napier, New Zealand, said one player had lost a relative in the disaster. —AFP

Australia seize the initiative against Pakistan

Melbourne, December 28
Australia were steaming towards a series-clinching win over Pakistan in the Boxing Day cricket Test after a major momentum shift on the third day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground today.

The Australians seized control of the match after Damien Martyn’s second consecutive century, a spirited 93-run eighth wicket stand with Jason Gillespie and a clatter of Pakistan wickets in the final session.

Pakistan, from having the world-beaters under pressure for the first two days, were fighting for every run against a resurgent home bowling attack and trying to avoid another heavy loss after their humiliating 491-run defeat in the first Test.

At stumps with two days to play, Pakistan were 85 for five, an overall lead of 47 with Shoaib Malik on 11 and Mohammad Sami on eight.

Martyn was Australia’s hero, batting for over six hours for 142 and the senior partner in a near-century stand with fast bowler Gillespie, which steered the home side past Pakistan’s first innings 341 for a pyschological 38-run lead.

Pakistan seemingly realised they had lost the initiative and both openers, Salman Butt (0) and Imran Farhat (5), were guilty of indisciplined shots while Shane Warne claimed the key wicket of first-innings centurion Yousuf Youhana for 12.

Youhana may have been unlucky with television replays suggesting the ball came off the Pakistan skipper’s pad to Ricky Ponting at silly mid-point leaving the tourists in strife at 60 for four.

Younis Khan, who scored 87 in a 192-run partnership with Youhana in the first innings, then played an miscued pull shot to Michael Kasprowicz and was caught by a diving Matthew Hayden in the gully for 23 leaving them at 68 for five.

Martyn scored his first Test century at the MCG, his 11th Test hundred, to symbolically take the initiative away from Pakistan, who also had injury and illness concerns to all-rounders Shoaib Malik and Abdul Razzaq.

Once again Pakistan could not finish off the Australians after they had them at 171 for five at one stage.

In the Perth Test, Pakistan had Australia flailing at 78 for five in the first innings only for the home side to wriggle away to 381 and then go on and humiliate the tourists by 491 runs before lunch on the fourth day.

Gillespie underlined his growing batting status at number nine by remaining undefeated on 50, his second Test half-century, off 108 balls with four fours and a six.

Express bowler Shoaib Akhtar bowled his heart out to take 5-109 and leg-spinner Danish Kaneria claimed 5-125.

Martyn refused to be goaded by Shoaib’s theatric attempts to draw him into a verbal exchange and often deliberately turned his back to avoid eye contact with the ‘Rawalpindi Express’.

Martyn was out leg before wicket to Kaneria shortly before tea. He batted for 370 minutes and hit 12 fours off 245 balls.

It looked so much better for Pakistan in the morning when they picked up the wickets of Adam Gilchrist and Warne.

Gilchrist looked in menacing form as he charged from an overnight 26 to 48 before he holed out to Mohammad Sami at deep mid-wicket off Keneria.

The outstanding number seven batsman, with a Test average of almost 52, batted for 66 minutes with four fours and a six off Kaneria.

In the last over before lunch, Shoaib caught and bowled Warne for 10 to leave the home side faltering at 254 for seven before Martyn and Gillespie’s restorative partnership.

Pakistan were a bowler short today after Abdul Razzaq was taken to hospital complaining of dizziness and shortness of breath.

Razzaq fell ill at the team’s hotel before the start of play and was to be kept in hospital overnight for observation.

Shoaib Malik, unable to bowl in the Test because of ICC concerns over his bowling action, was called to the crease late in the day after he didn’t field in Australia’s innings with split webbing.

Strauss, Trescothick lead fightback

Durban, December 28
England opening batsmen Marcus Trescothick and Andrew Strauss shared an attacking century partnership to bring their team back into contention on the third day of the second cricket Test against South Africa at Kingsmead today.

England, trailing by 193 on the first innings, were 137 for no wicket in their second innings at lunch. The batting of the two left-handers was in dramatic contrast to England’s effort in the first innings when they were all out for 139 after being sent in.

With the Kingsmead pitch maintaining a reputation for playing more easily in the middle stages of a match, both batsmen went for their strokes and 107 runs were added in 29 overs before lunch.

Trescothick was unbeaten on 59 and Strauss had 68. There was a high proportion of boundaries for both batsmen. Trescothick hit 10 fours and a six, while Strauss struck 11 fours.

After a quiet start on an overcast morning, Trescothick and Strauss picked up the scoring rate when left-arm spinner Nicky Boje and inexperienced fast bowler Dale Steyn came into the attack.

With Trescothick sweeping Boje for six and then hammering Steyn for three successive boundaries, at one stage 52 runs were added in five overs. The burst of scoring forced South African captain Graeme Smith to bring back the steady Shaun Pollock.

Steyn conceded 31 runs in three overs while Boje, whose first over of the day was a maiden, went for 39 runs off his next five overs.

There were no signs of the uneven and sometimes steep bounce that made batting more difficult in the first innings, while the South African bowlers did not achieve the accuracy and control which put England under pressure on the opening day.

Strauss was first to his fifty, reaching the mark off 78 balls as he continued to thrive on the South African bowling.

Strauss made 126 and 94 not out during England’s win in the first Test in Port Elizabeth and 25 in the first innings of the current Test. Trescothick took 92 balls to reach his half-century.

Scoreboard

South Africa (first innings): 332

Indian cricketers return

Kolkata, December 28
The Indian cricket team today returned home after a successful Test and one-day series in Bangladesh. There was utter chaos at the airport as a large number of onlookers and mediapersons surrounded the cricketers as soon as they came out of the international terminal.

Skipper Sourav Ganguly was the most inconvenienced. As a large number of lensmen, electronic media personnel and onlookers jammed the exit, security personnel had to take Ganguly back to the terminal building before leading him out through a separate door.

The security personnel literally shoved the scribes away before bundling Ganguly into his car, which immediately headed for his residence in South Kolkata.

The other team members took connecting domestic flights to their respective destinations.

3 benefit matches for Junior fund

New Delhi, December 28
The proceeds from three big matches of the ninth National Football League (NFL) will go to the Cristiano De Lima Junior Memorial Fund, the All-India Football Federation (AIFF) decided at its annual general body meeting here today.

“The money generated from two matches — home and away — between Mohun Bagan A C and Dempo SC and another between Bagan and East Bengal in Kolkata will go to the Junior fund. It remains to be decided whether the match will be a home match for which of the Kolkata giants, because it will be an NFL match,” said Mr Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi, who was re-elected today for yet another stint as AIFF president today.

Junior died just after scoring his second goal in the Federation Cup final in Bangalore on December 5 owing to an on-field collision with Bagan keeper Subrata Paul.

Paul was banned for two months by an AIFF disciplinary committee yesterday in the aftermath of the incident.

“I do not think anyone should question the decision,” Mr Dasmunshi said on the sidelines of a press conference today, “The committee had evaluated all aspects of the matter and it should be acceptable to all concerned”, he said.

The AIFF scrapped the customary dinner after its meeting today as a mark of respect to Junior. — UNI

Punjab cops in semis, served warning
Ravi Dhaliwal

Nabha, December 28
An errant Punjab Police stormed into the semifinals by scraping past Friends Club, Rumi (Jagraon), 3-2 while EME, Jalandhar, downed RCF, Kapurthala, by a solitary goal in the 29th All-India Liberals Hockey Tournament at the Ripudaman College grounds here today.

In the semifinals, Corps of Signals, Jalandhar, who downed Northern Railway 2-0, would square off with Punjab Police while EME would take on PSB Academy, who beat SC Railway, Secunderabad, 2-1.

Punjab Police, well known to pick up a fight at the drop of a hat when the chips are down, demonstrated the other side of their character when they verbally assaulted umpire P.S. Bhandari in their quarterfinal match which, however, they managed to win by the skin of their teeth. Trouble started brewing in the first half when the Friends Club striker Jugraj Singh deflected the ball home to notch up the equaliser after Kulbir Singh had put the cops ahead off a penalty corner.

The goal, which was clean as a slate, was vehemently protested by the cops, who took no time to lay siege to the umpires. As is their wont, the cops started showering the choicest of Punjabi expletives on P.S. Bhandari. Sensing that things could snowball into a major confrontation, both umpires walked out of the ground, leading to the match being suspended for nearly 10 minutes. The other umpire, Satinder Sharma, an international, could be seen packing his bags, but was later persuaded by the organisers and tournament director S.A. Khan to return to the field.

Earlier, Punjab Police coach Surjit Singh could be seen venting his ire from the sidelines at Satinder Sharma when the umpire, in an effort to placate ruffled feathers, flashed the green card to a couple of Punjab Police players.

Taking strict note of the happenings on the field and taking into view the cops’ not-so-good reputation of playing spoilsport when things fail to go their way, the tournament director shot of an angry missive to the Punjab Police manager, with a copy sent to the president of the tournament organising committee. In his letter, Mr Khan warned that if the cops indulged in similar behaviour in their semifinal clash tomorrow, he would be left with no option except to scratch the team from the tournament. On their part, the Punjab Police coach wrote to the tournament director, asking him to debar Satinder Sharma from doing duty in their semifinal clash tomorrow.

For the record, Kulbir Singh, Harnek Singh and Parveen Kumar netted for Punjab Police while Jugraj Singh and Gurpreet Singh scored for the losers.

Netball standard not good, says Gurbir
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh, December 28
Netball is a compulsory sports discipline for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Delhi and the main concern will be to get it included in the Priority A of the sports list of the Government of India. This was stated by Mr Gurbir Singh, President of the Netball Federation of India (NFI). He said being host to these games, India would automatically get entry in the above games, which was otherwise impossible since our standards were not at a par with various countries.

Mr Gurbir Singh said in the Commonwealth Games, top 12 countries of the world would take part and for the past many years, India could never qualify for these games. The reason was that our netball standard was not good and we needed to work very hard to prove our worth. He said netball had origin in the Commonwealth countries and it had been basically a women’s sport, though we had men’s competitions at various levels. He said it was a daunting task to compete with top countries like Australia, New Zealand and England.

He said the first thing would be to get it included as Category A sports discipline, which would help getting government grants, sending teams abroad for exposure, inviting foreign coaches and spending money on infrastructure. At present, netball falls in Category C of the government list. The Indian Olympic Association, under whose banner the Commonwealth Games would be held, had strongly recommended our case to the Government of India and to the International Federation of Netball Association for more exposure, said Mr Gurbir Singh.

He said at present, NFI had 26 affiliated units and for the past many years, we had been conducting the under-15, under-18, under-21 and senior championships. Delhi was playing host to the Senior National Netball Meet in men and women. He said during the various national meets, they had been scouting talent, but the gigantic task lied ahead when they would prepare the Indian team for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. He said NFI planned to target the under-21, under-17 and under-15 national meets so as to select a cream of 50 girls in the age group 14 to 20 years, who could be trained, polished and given specialised coaching to be ready by 2010. When asked which were the regions they would lay stress on, he said girls hailing from Punjab, Manipur, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh,Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh would be given preference. He said they had also submitted a long-term plan to the Government of India on their training plans.
