Chittagong, December 20 India, who had won the first Test at Dhaka by an innings and 140 runs, completed the formalities, bowling out the hosts for 124. Bangladesh, who collapsed in their second innings to be placed at 118 for nine overnight, added just six runs this morning when Talha Jubair sent the second ball of the day from Harbhajan Singh over the ropes for a six. But that was all the number 11 batsman could do. He holed out to Irfan Pathan at long on just two balls later, bringing an end to the ordeal of his side which suffered its 31st defeat in 34 matches since gaining Test status in 2000. The series win capped India's fine run this year during which they won two more series - against Pakistan and South Africa. It also improved India's tally to 108 in the ICC Test rankings and brought them one point closer to second-placed England and three ahead of Pakistan (105). Bangladesh had raised hopes of putting a fight against their superior opponents when they made 333 in their first innings, built around a superb unbeaten 158 by eventual Man-of-the-Match Mohammad Ashraful. But a familiar collapse in the second innings after Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly enforced the follow-on, meant India achieved a victory with almost two days to spare. The hosts had come quite close to avoiding the follow-on after bowling out the Indians for 540, but they fell short by just eight runs. It was Indian left-arm pacer Irfan Pathan (5 for 32) who ripped through the top order before the spinners, led by Anil Kumble, shared the remaining wickets to fashion India's comprehensive win. Bangladesh could have been bowled out well under the 100-run mark but for the 40-run last wicket partnership between the number 10 batsman Nazmul Hossain and last man Jubair, who emerged as the innings top scorer. Pathan, who finished with 18 wickets from the two Tests, was named Man-of-the-Series. India now have an extra day of unscheduled rest but the intense security measures could also mean more time to kill ahead of the first of three one-day internationals starting at the same venue on Thursday. The second and third one-dayers are back-to-back matches under lights in Dhaka on Sunday and Monday. Bangladesh, though, have more serious problems to worry about. The dazzling century by 20-year-old Mohammad Ashraful caught the Indians unawares but equally bizarre was their collapse in the second innings which lasted less than 27 overs. Ashraful's innings was a perfect example of counter attacking batsmanship but the inability of the top order to handle the new ball brought their downfall in the second innings. But the batting collapse also pointed to the prodigious talent of Pathan who claimed his third five-wicket haul of the series. Zaheer Khan was a bit off colour on the third day but like his new ball partner, the Baroda seamer found the right length in his second and third spells to claim his 100th Test wicket. The Test would be remembered for the important individual landmarks achieved by the Indian batsmen. Rahul Dravid became the first to score a century in every Test playing nation, and that put him in the company of Gary Kirsten, Steve Waugh and Sachin Tendulkar who have hit a hundred against all the nine competing teams but not in every country. It was some achievement and ended a not-so-good start to the season on a positive note for Dravid who would now look at the Pakistan series ahead with added confidence. Opener Gautam Gambhir struck his maiden ton, having fallen short by four runs against South Africa at home earlier. The Delhi left hander's strokeplay was a welcome contrast to his state teammate Akash Chopra's studied defence but he would have to prove himself against tougher opposition. For Bangladesh, Mashrafe Mortaza was the other find of the series. The 21-year old right arm pacer proved to be more than a handful to the Indian top order, and he seemed to cherish the fact that he got Dravid both the times. The average age of the Bangladesh team is less than 24 and that should be a good reason to hope for a better future. It was also a bold and appreciable thing by Bangladesh to lay out a good sporting wicket for both the matches. That is probably one aspect of the game the Indians might have to learn from the hosts. We must carry on in same vein: Ganguly
Chittagong, December 20 India ended the season with six wins from 11 Tests which included three series wins — against Pakistan, South Africa and Bangladesh. “We played very well in 2004, especially in Test cricket. We need to continue in the same vein. We are playing well for the last two-and-half-years. We must carry on,” Ganguly said after India’s innings and 83-run win over Bangladesh in the second and final cricket Test here. The Indian captain credited his teammates for the fine run in Test cricket but said the side needed to be a little more consistent in one-dayers. “They have all done very well. It’s really difficult to single out any one person. (Virender) Sehwag, Rahul (Dravid), Sachin (Tendulkar), (VVS) Laxman and (Gautam) Gambhir all played well. “There were failures here and there but that is part and parcel of the game. (Irfan) Pathan was also outstanding,” he said. With the Indians scheduled to play three one-dayers against the hosts, Ganguly said the players needed to apply themselves a little more. “We have been a bit inconsistent in one-dayers. Fielding needed to be a bit better. We need to apply ourselves more in the one-dayers,” he said. Although Bangladesh crashed to their 31st defeat in 34 Tests, Ganguly said the minnows have the talent to make a place for themselves at the highest level. “There is enormous talent in the team. India had also taken a few years to settle down at the highest level. Everyone should be patient with them. Chopping and changing won’t help,” he said. Pathan, who bagged the man of the series award for his 18-wicket haul in the two Tests, said he was happy the way his career has progressed since making the debut against Australia just over a year back. Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar said his side drew a few positives from the series loss against India. “One of them is Md Ashraful, who is a fine player and came up with an outstanding performance in the first innings here,” Bashar said. — PTI |
Whatmore happy with performance
Chittagong, December 20 “I am pretty happy with the performance of my players but not with the outcome of the matches,” Whatmore said during the post-match media conference. He said the Bangladesh cricketers had potential like any other player in the sub-continent and they needed some more time to grow as a team. Whatmore praised Indian fast bowler Irfan Pathan and said the bowler made a big difference. “I think the difference between the two sides really is the Man of the Series — Irfan Pathan. I think it’s clear to see that we have to see off the new ball. We have to play better to get a score that is competitive,” he observed. He also commended India for touring Bangladesh with full team. Whatmore also praised Bangla middle order bat Mohammad Ashraful for his superb knock of 158 not out. Whatmore, however, regretted that despite Ashraful’s defiant knock, his team could not avoid the follow on.

Cut bowling run-up for team’s sake, Shoaib urged
Perth, December 20 The Pakistanis are licking their wounds after an embarrassing 491-run shellacking in the first Test against Australia here. One area where Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer wants improvement is for Shoaib to cut his 40-metre approach to bowl more overs, get through them quicker and accelerate the team's over-rate. In the Perth Test match, Shoaib could only bowl five-over spells because of the energy he expended running in and when he was out of the attack, Australia's batsmen looked more comfortable. When Shoaib, 29, does bowl, it takes between five and six minutes to complete an over -- meaning Pakistan treads a fine line as captains can be suspended by the International Cricket Council for letting their teams dawdle in the field. India's Sourav Ganguly was recently banned for two Tests for letting the over-rate slip in a one-day clash with Pakistan, but had the penalty quashed on appeal. Woolmer said Pakistan's over-rate against Australia was "ridiculous and very poor" and urged Shoaib to consider a change. "We've looked at that and we've discussed it already with the bowler concerned because he runs a long way and it takes a long time for him to finish an over," Woolmer said today. "He's an important part of the side because he takes wickets and he's quick, but we have to work out how we can just change that over rate." Woolmer was confident Shoaib could bowl equally as well with a shorter approach, as he had bowled well with a new approach in limited overs matches. "Mainly, he's got to look, and we've got to look together, at how we can help the team and how he can prevent us from having to rush our overs like we had to the other day just to get our over rate down," he said. "If our over rate had got up to minus five, Inzy (captain Inzamam-ul-Haq) would have been banned for two months so we have to look at that as a specific thing in our strategy." Shoaib should play in the second Melbourne Test from Boxing Day after being cleared of shoulder damage when he dived in the field on Saturday. Australia have put an emphasis on pacemen using shortened approaches yet still maintaining explosive power at the point of release and Jason Gillespie and Michael Kasprowicz have had great results with remodelled run-ups. "That's working for our bowlers, it may not work for Shoaib," Australian coach John Buchanan said. "He is their key strike bowler so he needs to be on the park for a start, he needs to be able to deliver three or four very good overs for Pakistan or longer spells, if need be, for his captain when required." — AFP |
Imran flays team for huge defeat
Karachi, December 20 "It's deplorable to see Pakistan going down like that," Khan, a celebrated allrounder and the country's most successful captain yet, told AFP. "Until and unless we correct our faulty system -- and that I have been saying for the last 25 years -- our batsmen will not be technically and temperamentally equipped to face a quality bowling side like Australia," said the 52-year old. Australia posted the fourth highest victory margin in Test history after Pakistan crumbled on the penultimate day for a paltry 72 in their second innings at Perth yesterday. Paceman Glenn McGrath recorded a career-best 8 for 24, with only Yousuf Youhana (27) and Younis Khan (17) reaching double figures. "We will continue to blame coaches and captains for each defeat and sack them, but the real remedy is to develop batsmen technically by overhauling our faulty system," said Khan, who played 82 Tests and 176 one-day games for Pakistan between 1971 and 1992. "Either correct it by improving the system or send the batsmen to play in county cricket. "I think the coach can make a marginal difference and it's the captain who makes the team fight, but how can he make a team fight whose base is weak?" Khan said: "Batting has always been Pakistan's bane on tours of Australia. Our batsmen thrive against lack of quality bowling but when they come up against world class bowling of Australia, they are exposed." Australia showed the stuff of champions on day one when they were caught napping at 78 for 5 but recovered, Khan said. "The hallmark of a champion team is that they hung in during bad times and when they got an opportunity, showed the killer instinct. Pakistan should have been a pack of wolves once they caught Australia, but they weren't," he said. Another former captain and chief of selectors Wasim Bari said the manner in which the team lost was disappointing. "This team is professional comprising talented players who are capable of fighting back, but the manner in which they lost was disappointing," he said. Leading English daily 'Dawn' ran a headline on its sports page saying: "Perth: Pakistan cricket's Waterloo". "The result of the first Test was not unexpected but what was frustrating and shocking was the disgraceful performances of Pakistanis, allowing the Australians to practically pull the rug from under their feet," said the newspaper. — AFP

Simon Jones takes England close to win
Port Elizabeth, December 20 South Africa were all out for 229 at tea, leaving England a target of 142 to win. Jones took four for 18 in a spell that wrecked South Africa’s hopes of setting a big target. Earlier the Glamorgan player played a major role in the key breakthrough of the day when he sprinted in from fine leg and dived forward to hold an exceptional catch to dismiss South African captain Graeme Smith. Smith and Jacques Kallis, South Africa’s leading batsmen, had put on 88 runs and were gradually getting on top of the bowlers before Smith hooked Andrew Flintoff and Jones held a catch which had his team-mates racing across the field to exchange high fives with him. After Boeta Dippenaar was bowled by left-arm spinner Ashley Giles, Jones was brought on to bowl in mid-afternoon and had almost immediate success when, with his second and third balls, he dismissed Kallis and Shaun Pollock, South Africa’s most experienced players. Zander de Bruyn was caught at slip off Flintoff before Jones followed up by bowling Thami Tsolekile, who was totally deceived by a slower ball, and trapping Makhaya Ntini leg before wicket. Relief plan for Junior’s family
Kolkata, December 20 “We want to raise Rs 10 lakh for Junior’s family. This can be raised from the proceeds of a NFL match between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan,” Chakraborty said. The minister, who held a joint press conference with Indian Football Association secretary Subrata Dutta, said he has asked the state’s apex soccer body to seek AIFF’s consent for the novel plan and to schedule the East Bengal-Mohun Bagan match as the inaugural tie of the high profile tournament. Dutta, on his part, said “I will put a request to the AIFF in this regard”. The IFA secretary, scheduled to attend a meeting convened by the AIFF in Delhi tomorrow to discuss the situation arising out of the death of Junior, said he would raise the issue there. The AIFF, however, was already considering donating the entire proceeds of two NFL matches between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan and Dempo and Mohun Bagan for Junior’s family. Chakraborty said while the proceeds of a derby clash between the city giants should be enough to raise the targeted amount, “we can also approach some sponsors, if needed”.
