Minnows Bangladesh stun India, level series Dhaka, December 26 India were caught napping by an opposition which gave the packed Bangabandhu Stadium a chance to celebrate the home team's first victory on home soil in 36 one-day internationals. Chasing Bangladesh's modest total of 229 for nine in 50 overs, India were bowled out for 214 in 47.5 overs, crashing to their first ever defeat to the minnows in any form of the game. Bangladesh, playing their 100th one-day international and having won only five of these before today's day-night encounter, belied their greenhorn status by some excellent display with the ball and in the field. The Indians, who fielded a new look team after being hardly tested in any of the matches of the series so far, paid the price for over confidence and in the end made a heavy weather of chasing a modest Bangaldesh total which was built around an enterprising 67 by Aftab Ahmed. For India, Sridharan Sriram, seeking to make a comeback, topscored with 57 while Mohammad Kaif also made a fluent 49 but that was about all as the visitors capitulated against a supremely determined opposition. The Indian chase never really took off after they lost Virender Sehwag off the third ball of the innings, and a series of bad strokes led them to their worst defeat since losing to Kenya in a triseries in South Africa in 2001. The brightest phase of the innings came when Kaif and Sriram featured in a 63-run stand for the fourth wicket. Joginder Sharma showed pluck in unleashing audacious shots to remain unbeaten on 29 but the lower order cracked under pressure. The jam-packed stadium erupted in delirium after Aftab Ahmed's direct hit knocked the non-striker's stumps to run last man Murali Kartik out in the 48th over. Paceman Mashrafe Mortaza, declared Man of the Match for his all-round display, provided a thunderous start as he broke through the defence of Sehwag. But more shock was to follow as Yuvraj Singh's full blooded drive off Tapash Baisya then landed straight in the hands of Rajin Saleh at cover. At seven for two, Bangladesh smelled blood. It also meant captain Sourav Ganguly had to curb his attacking instincts and with Sriram also taking his time to settle down, it was a period of lull. Bangladesh tasted another success when Ganguly, trying to improve the scoring rate, drove off the medium pace of Khaled Mahmud and ended up with a simple catch to Mortaza (2 for 36 in 9 overs) at point. The arrival of Kaif injected some vigour as he found the gaps consistently. It also spurred Sriram, who had gone into a shell, to open up. India's second 50 came in 10 overs and although Dinesh Mongia fell cheaply, there was no let up in the shot making. Mahendra Singh Dhoni adopted a slambang approach, but after striking two boundaries, played a pull shot off Mortaza that was taken low at midwicket by captain Bashar. Joginder Sharma and Zaheer Khan then struck four boundaries between them, and the 200 came in 45th over. But just when things seemed to be under control, Zaheer went for a big one against Mahmud and Mortaza, who has been the face of Bangladesh's new found confidence, took a well judged catch at long on. Team was not complacent, says defiant Ganguly
Dhaka, December 26 Bangladesh, who made 229 for nine in 50 overs in the second one-dayer played under lights, recorded their first-ever win over India after the visiting batsmen threw away their wickets to be bowled out for 214 with more than two overs to spare. "There are a lot of youngsters in the side who are keen to play well and keep their place in the side. So there was no complaceny," Ganguly said after the match. "We lost wickets early on and kept losing them. Bangladesh also play an outstanding game and fielded brilliantly under pressure." With the three-match series level at 1-1, Ganguly said India would have to have a rethink on the composition of the team for tomorrow's decider. "We have to play better tomorrow. Better that what we did in the first two matches. We have to think about our team composition." Home captain Habibul Bashar gave credit to his side for the "big win" and said that it was fielding which made all the difference in the end. "It was not a big score so we knew that if we had to win we would have to field well. I am happy that we fielded quite well," Bashar said. "I am also happy with the performance of the lower oder batsmen. They chipped in valuable runs and also when their turn came for bowling, they did very well." Mashrafe Mortaza, who was declared Man of the Match for his all-round performance, said he tried to maintain a good line and length in a bid to tie down the Indian batsmen. Mortaza made 31 with the bat before taking two wickets, including that of opener Virender Sehwag who was castled for zero in the third ball of the Indian innings. He also took two catches including that of Ganguly to play an important role in the home side's first ever win over India. — PTI |
Youhana’s ton props up Pakistan
Melbourne, December 26 Youhana, who took over from sidelined captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, revelled in his new responsibility to hammer a spirited century, his 12th overall and first against the Australians, who humiliated Pakistan by 491 runs in the first Test in Perth a week ago. Inzamam did not recover in time from a stiff back but the beleaguered tourists found an inspirational replacement leader with 30-year-old Youhana taking to master leg-spinner Shane Warne, hoisting him for three of his four sixes. Pakistan went to stumps at 318 for six with wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal on 16 and Abdul Razzaq not out on one. Pakistan’s miserable second innings capitulation of 72 off 31.3 overs before fourth-day lunch in Perth became just a memory as Youhana combined in a record 192-run fourth-wicket stand with Younis Khan. Youhana was imperious in his 117-ball hundred as he and Younis gave back some of Australia’s own medicine on what is regarded as the showpiece day of Australian cricket year before 61,552 fans at the cavernous Melbourne Cricket Ground. Warne (1-100) finally snared Youhana 12 overs from the end for his 556th Test wicket when he had him stumped down the leg side by Adam Gilchrist for 111 off 134 balls with 11 fours and four sixes. Youhana was given a generous ovation from the Australian crowd as he left. Younis missed out on his century when Gilchrist snapped him up off Gillespie for 87 off 157 balls eight overs before stumps. Gillespie had 3-72 off 22 overs. At the close of an uplifting day for Pakistani cricket, the tourists lost another wicket with Gillespie claiming youngster Shoaib Malik for six, caught at the second attempt by second-slipper Ricky Ponting. Ntini, Pollock wreck England
Durban, December 26 After Graeme Smith had won the toss and asked England to bat, Ntini made the initial breakthrough in the 10th over when wicketkeeper AB de Villiers clung on to a thick inside edge that flew rapidly from the bat of Marcus Trescothick after the England opener had scored 18. Eight overs later, England were 32 for two when Mark Butcher dragged a delivery from fast bowler Dale Steyn on to his stumps and was out for five. Left-arm spinner Nicky
Boje, who missed the first Test in Port Elizabeth while recovering from thyroid surgery, was introduced into the attack and had England captain Michael Vaughan dropped by De Villiers with the third delivery he bowled. Strauss, who scored 126 and 94 not out in England’s first Test victory, drove Boje’s next ball uppishly to Ntini at mid-off and was out for 25, including five fours. Fast bowler Shaun Pollock bowled the second over after lunch, which England reached on 58 for three, and trapped Graham Thorpe lbw for one with his first ball. Scoreboard England (first

Fleming leads Kiwis to easy win
Auckland, December 26 Sri Lanka’s lack of batting preparation for New Zealand conditions was underlined as they lasted just 42 overs before being dismissed for 141, and the Black Caps comfortably cruised to 144 in the 33rd over for the loss of only three wickets. After a dismal batting performance, the pressure was on the Sri Lankan bowlers to perform, but after striking early to dismiss Nathan Astle they were at the mercy of the New Zealand batsmen thereafter. Backing Fleming’s unbeaten 77, Mathew Sinclair chimed in with 31 in a 57-run partnership for the second wicket, and Hamish Marshall was not out 14. It was New Zealand’s 19th win from 23 completed one-day internationals and boosted their chances of overtaking Sri Lanka as the world’s second-ranked one-day side behind Australia. Fleming, whose 77 in 92 balls included eight fours and two sixes, had fortune on his side from the start when he won the toss, put Sri Lanka into bat and saw Daryll Tuffey dismiss Saman Jayantha on the third ball. After only 10 overs at the crease, the Sri Lankan batsmen were obviously out of sorts and after 13 overs were four for 35. Only Sanath Jayasuriya (43) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (48) put up any resistance, cautiously forging a 35-run partnership for the fifth wicket before Cairns outwitted Jayasuriya. Dasmunsi set to be re-elected AIFF chief
Chandigarh, December 26 In fact, the election to all posts of the AIFF as well as members of the executive body will be unanimous since for every post single nominations have been filed. For the executive committee, which will have two members from the five zones — west, south, north-east, east and north — the exact number of nominations have been received. This is the first time that the AIFF elections are being conducted as per the new constitution of the federation, adopted at a special general body meeting held on November 7. The constitution of the AIFF has been amended and adopted on the advice of the international body, FIFA. For the post of Vice-President from the North Zone, politician-turned-sports promoter Sanjay Singh from Uttar Pradesh is the choice while for the two posts of executive committee members from North Zone, nominations have been received from former international Inder Singh of Punjab and S. Nasir Ali of Delhi. Other issues which will come up for discussion at the AIFF annual general body meeting include finalisation of the accounts, approval of the budget for the coming year, appointment of various committees and drawing up the programme for the coming year. Also, the unfortunate death of Brazilian footballer Cristiano Junior during the final of the Federation Cup at Bangalore on December 5 will obviously be discussed by the members attending the AGM. But prior to the AIFF annual general body meeting, the disciplinary committee of the AIFF will meet tomorrow at Delhi to discuss the issue of Junior’s death. Junior died of cardiac failure after colliding with Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Subroto Paul while scoring a goal for Dempo Club of Goa. The disciplinary committee headed by Hardev Jadeja and comprising N.A. Khan (member of the executive committee), L.R. Natarajan (former FIFA referee), Mohan Raj (Secretary of the Karnataka Football Association) and Rakesh Bakshi, Secretary of the Chandigarh Football Association, will examine all aspects of the issue and also meet Subroto Paul, who was placed under suspension after the incident. The committee will study the report of the referee, the match commissioner and also view videoclips of the incident. It will also examine if the medical facilities available at the ground were adequate. The findings of this committee, if finalised in time, will probably also be placed before the AIFF annual general body meeting. |
IA scrape past France
New Delhi, December 26 Indian Airlines, packed with a number of former and current internationals — a virtual India team — looked lost and struggled to find their rhythm in the beginning, but pulled themselves back to knock in two goals, once in each half, to ground the visitors, who were on a high after their successful outings in Mumbai and Hyderabad. Indian Airlines took the lead four minutes before the interval when Bimal Lakhra powered in true and hard, after Sandeep Singh’s stiff shot off their first penalty corner had rebounded off rival custodian Bruno Loossif. Bruno was responsible for denying two sure goals to Indian Airlines but Lakhra’s shot came all too quickly for him to save. As the match was heading for an Indian Airlines victory, France equalised through Branquard G. Within seconds, Indian Airlines mounted another fast move to restore the lead with veteran Dhanraj Pillay giving a deft finish to a Ravinder cross from the right. The win saved the skin of the star-packed Indian Airlines, but the French team displayed the quality of hockey they would be unfolding against the Indian XI tomorrow and the day after. The visitors had recorded 4-2 and 4-0 wins against Mumbai XI and 5-0 and 2-1 wins against the Indian Under-21 team before coming to Delhi. With nothing to lose, the French team played clean, fast hockey which put the Airlines players, depending on their dribbling skills, on the wrong foot. Dhanraj was effectively marked and Indian Airlines took quite some time to decipher the pattern-weaving passes of the French team. The visitors forced their first penalty corner in the eighth minute, but Stephane Jaquet’s scoop narrowly missed the mark. Indian Airlines forced their second penalty corner nine minutes after resumption, but muffed it and a few minutes later, Birender’s shot was deflected by the goalkeeper. Dhanraj came out in the 20th minute, and the French kept on pressing for a goal. But their labour bore fruit only two minutes before the final hooter following their second penalty corner. Branquard effected a hard shot but Airlines custodian Jagdish Ponnappa chested away the ball. The French latched on the ball again, and took it back into the D, to give Branquard an opportunity to redeem his earlier lapse and he made no mistake this time, as his gentle tap found the ball inside the goal (1-1). But before the French could celebrate, Ravinder and Dhanraj made a quick-silver move to score the match-winner (2-1). |
Punjab survive, Chandigarh eves win Ludhiana, December 26 The hosts Punjab survived some anxious moments before emerging winners 102-81 against Karnataka in a pool ‘A’ match of the 55th Dhanoa Senior National Basketball Championship which began at Guru Nanak Sports Complex here today. The visitors started the proceedings in style. They gave tough time to Punjab players and went neck and neck. Till the half time, Karnataka players were matching with Punjab cagers and conceded a thin 2 point lead 40-42. After changing ends, Punjab men reoraganised themselves and started playing aggressive game which paid dividends. Once they got the rhythm, they never looked behind and kept on increasing the lead and finally wrapped up the issue by 21 points margin. For the hosts, Amit Prashar was outstanding. He scored 40 points, followed by Talwinder Singh and Jagdeep Singh who contributed 20 and 17 points, respectively, while skipper Parminder Singh accounted for 14 points. For the visitors, the main scorers were
Srinivasan, Uma Shanka and Basavaraj who chipped in with 23, 18 and 15 points respectively. In the men’s section, last year’s losing finalists, Indian Railways and the current champions Tamil Nadu won their respective matches to begin their title hunt on a sound note. In a pool ‘B’ encounter, Indian Railways came out triumphant against their spirited rivals from Rajasthan 72-36. Till half time, Rajasthan players matched their opponents and conceded only two-points (28-30) lead. However, from the third quarter, Railways’ men were simply unstoppable and they continued to gather points at will and eventually won the verdict in their favour at 72-36. For winners, Trideep Rai played well, scoring 16 points besides attempting two offensive and defensive rebounds each while Riazdin and Ranjit Singh chipped in with 13 and 12 points, respectively. The only notable scorer for Rajasthan was Mod Singh who netted the ball thrice. Defending champions, Tamil Nadu, in a pool ‘A’ match defeated Haryana 86-55. The main contributors for the holders were Chander Shekhar (19), M. Puneshwar (10) and Sukaneshwar (13) while Manoj and Deepak fought well for the losers netting 18 and 8 points, respectively. In another pool ‘D’ match (men), Delhi prevailed over West Bengal 70-57. |

Northern Railway, EME in last 8
Nabha, December 26 The other teams to reach the quarterfinals after today’s matches were EME, Jalandhar, who beat Patiala-based Centre of Excellence 2-0, and SC Railway, Secunderabad, who downed Punjabi University, Patiala, 2-1. The fourth match, scheduled to be played in the evening between AMU and Friends Club, Rumi (Jagraon), had to be called off as the former failed to make it to the venue. Earlier, Pakistan’s Ideal Hockey Club and Shahjahanpur XI failed to keep their appointments in the tourney forcing the organisers to field second-grade club teams to complete the programme. Air Force were grounded not by any diligent display put up by their rivals but rather they crashed as they failed to put up a cohesive game plan. The players, after notching up wins in the earlier matches against Wanderers, Bhopal, and IHF (Juniors) today looked tired. The defence, particularly in the second half when their opponents struck twice, looked leaden-footed as railway strikers made repeated sallies into the rival territory. It was only in the first 10 minutes that Air Force jelled as a team and during this period they scored off a penalty corner taken by defender Baldev Singh. The railmen managed to equalise a minute later when skipper Brijnev made his way past two defenders before sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and the ball into the netting. The railmen went into the lead through striker S.Raju. Midway into the first half, Northern Railway’s domination was visible but Satvir Singh scored a freak goal to enable Air Force to draw level. However, a tired-looking Air Force defence later crumbled against the sustained pressure put by the railmen, who slotted in two more goals to knock Air Force out 4-2. |
