Traders protest against murder

The livid traders and people of Dhukna area had downed their shutters in protest against the sensational murder of a utensil trader, Ajay Goel who had been shot dead in broad daylight near Dhukna trijunction.

Later, the traders blocked Delhi-Meerut highway for more than an hour. The police had arrested three criminals under suspicion.

The criminals, Ajit Singh, Rajinder and Sunil told the police that Ajay’s murder was planned in district jail Dasna. One Naresh is already in jail for a murderous attack on Ajay.

According to police, Ajay was killed in a dispute over lending money. All the four criminals used to assist him in his money-lending venture. They had also taken Rs 4 lakh as loan which soured their relationship with Ajay and led to his murder ultimately.

Ajay was an insurance agent and senior warden of civil defence. He was killed as his scooter reached the trijunction where two criminals lay in wait for it. As the assailants fled, Ajay Goel was rushed to Yashoda Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. The BJP women cell president, Ms Samita Dayal, also reached the spot with some party workers.

Though murderous attacks had been made on Ajay earlier also, he was not provided with police protection.

Delhi migrant mantra: Turning numbers into political clout
Raghubansh Sinha
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 26
The celebration of the chhath puja in the national Capital in the last decade has become a conspicuous event with political leaders of all shades making efforts to be associated with the occasion.

Taking a cue from the media, which has provided high-profile coverage to the festival, the Delhi administration and political leaders across the spectrum have facilitated the celebration by getting water bodies and waterfronts in and around the city cleaned up, so that the devotees find it convenient to worship the Sun God while taking the holy dip.

Surely, these steps have gone a long way in assuaging the sentiments of the devotees, mainly from Bihar, Jharkhand and Eastern UP, who had felt slighted in the past owing to the apathetic attitude of the Punjabi-Jat dominated city government.

The moot question, however, is whether this change of heart is truly religious and sentimental or something more earthly, related to the natives of the Poorvanchal region being seen as an important vote bank in the national Capital.

According to reports, there are 30 lakh people from Bihar and Eastern UP now staying and working in the city. Constituting nearly 25-30 per cent of the voting population, they form a formidable vote bank, particularly in the 30-odd Assembly segments in East and Outer Delhi Parliamentary constituency.

“There are at least 30 Assembly seats, where this section has the capacity to make or break a candidates prospects,” claims second term Nasirpur MLA Mahabal Mishra, who wears his Poorvanchali affiliation on his sleeves.

Acknowledging the growing importance of the voters from this region, the Delhi Congress chief, Mr Ram Babu Sharma, said: “It is no secret that it is the Poorvanchali vote bank that has brought this government back to power. It is the make or break factor and we must show our support to them.”

Even as they constitute the underbelly of the city, forming much of the labour force, they have a formidable presence among the upper-middle class, including the bureaucracy, academics, journalists, corporates and other professional classes. Among the youths, their presence is conspicuous in the schools, colleges and universities and their native lingo has become increasingly familiar on the campuses.

As such, it was not surprising that Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, her Cabinet colleagues and party leaders from across the spectrum, including godman Chandraswami, parked themselves at one or the other puja celebrations to register their presence in the mind of the Poorvanchali voters.

“Four years ago,” the Chief Minister said, “no one knew what Chhath was. Now it has become one of the major festivals of Delhi.” Responding to the large-scale participation of the devotees in the Chhath puja, the Chief Minister even announced her resolve to increase the Rs 20 lakh spent by the government in 2004 and construct permanent ghats at appropriate places in the city for the next year’s celebrations.

Even as there are a number of socio-cultural organisations claiming to represent the region in the National Capital Region — such as Bihar Lok Manch, Poorvanchal Vikas Sangathan, Poorvanchal Mahasangh etc — they have failed to conceptualise any sort of socio-economic agenda for the community.

The need is to steadily convert their numerical strength into a formidable political clout, so as to improve their bargaining position to extract economic concessions, rather than being satisfied with symbolic gestures that appeal to ethnic, regional and similar parochial identities.

There is no doubt that the process has already begun in recent years. The natives from Bihar and Eastern UP are slowly beginning to redefine what the city is all about. “The DANICS cadre is more like the Bihar Civil Service, there are so many Bihari officers,” says the former Delhi Police Commissioner and MP from Aurangabad, Mr Nikhil Kumar. For him, Bihar has not just provided “good labour”, it has also given “good intellect” to Delhi.

He said DSIDC proposes to set up an environment-friendly 15-acre ecological park and a 200-acre ‘knowledge park’ in the Capital. It also proposes to set up a Business and Investment Forum to cater to business and investment opportunities.

Woman SI caught in unsavoury controversy
Parmindar Singh

Ghaziabad, November 26
The UP police department is caught in an unsavoury controversy over the pregnancy of a woman Sub-Inspector.

She allegedly became a mother a month after her marriage. This has caused a lot of embarrassment to the police department and her family.

The DIG police said, “Though it was not a crime to become a mother before marriage, this is a proof of the loose character of the police woman.” The fact has been confirmed by the Ghaziabad SSP Jai Narain Singh also.

The woman SI, posted in Hindon area, had joined the police force as an unmarried woman, it is learnt.

During her long posting in Ghaziabad, the SI is reported to have developed a liaison with a builder which resulted in her pregnancy. She had taken leave to give birth to the child whom she is reportedly bringing up now.

An inquiry was started when her family and the police department came to know of the development. Police Circle Officer Dinesh Yadav has conducted the probe, it is learnt.

In his report, CO Yadav has said that legally no action can be taken against the lady SI, yet a departmental action can be taken.

The DIG police Meerut, whom the file was sent by the Ghaziabad SSP JN Singh, is learnt to have taken a grim view of the matter.

12-km-long Modi Nagar bypass to ease traffic snarls
Our Correspondent

Ghaziabad, November 26
The Highway Division of the Public Works Department has found a solution to the traffic snarls at Modi Nagar on the National Highway No. 58.

A proposal for a 12-km-long bypass at a cost of Rs 60 crore has been sent to the state government for approval.

After getting its consent, the project will be finally submitted to the Central government for clearance. The PWD Highway division is understood to have already started action on completing the bypass by next year.

According to the Divisional Engineer, Mr I.S. Yadav, the 12-km-long bypass is estimated to cost Rs 60 crore.

The bypass will start three km short of village Sikri and join the National Highway after Kadarabad. It will touch en route Sikhoda, Hazari, Phapharana, Makarmatpur Sikhedoda and Yakutpur villages.

The proposed bypass will be a great relief to the vehicles plying between Delhi, Meerut, Muzzafarnagar, Hardwar, and Dehra Dun which have to face traffic jams at Modi Nagar.

The district administration has been approached for the allotment of free land for the bypass. The district administration has promised to make it available soon.

Modi Nagar has been a prominent industrial town of the state on this highway, but gradually encroachments have taken place in the area. This had a bad effect on industries. Encroachments have reduced the highway to a narrow path.

The traffic has to crawl in this place literally. In view of the substantial encroachments on the roadside, bypass seems to be the only alternative available to the authorities.

Karnataka Utsav celebrated in Faridabad
Bijendra Ahlawat
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, November 26
The people of Karnataka, settled here for the past several decades, have not lost their identity despite becoming a part of the semi-metropolitan lifestyle in this premier industrial hub of the National Capital Region.

They celebrated their annual function, known as ‘Karnataka Utsav-2004’, under the aegis of the Faridabad Kannada Sangh. It was celebrated at the auditorium of the National Council of Cement and Building Materials at Sector- 6 here yesterday evening.

Though the number of Kannada people is not that high in ratio to the total population here, the bond between the 100-odd members of the Sangh has been quite strong, as they hardly miss a chance to attend get-togethers.

The highlight of the function was the special dance ballet. ‘Bhramari’, a troupe of young dancers from Bangalore, cast a spell on the audience.

The presentation was described as an amalgamation of the flexibility to move between all genres of dance, be it classical, folk, contemporary or cinematic.

While ‘Manuja Matha Vishwa Patha’ had been the folk and semi-classical type of dance form, the Jai Jai Mataram was the semi-classical type.

According to Mr Vasantha Shetty Bellare, vice-president of the Faridabad Kannada Sangha, nearly all the Sangha members and even from the neighbouring city of Gurgaon took part in the celebration.

He said the association of the Kannada people with Faridabad is as old as the city. Over the years, banks like Canara Bank, Syndicate Bank, Vijaya Bank, Vysya Bank and Karnataka Bank, have entered the city one after another.

As these banks have their origin in Karnataka, a large number of employees from the parent state migrated to this place, he added.

One of the oldest members of the Sangha, Mr K.N. Prabhu, who had been one of the founders of the Sangha, recalled that he had landed here in 1961 after getting an appointment in the Thomson Press.

Many more have made Faridabad their home over the past decades.

‘Parantha’ of contention
Our Correspondent

Greater Noida, November 26
A sweetshop in Gama sector, widely known for the quality of its ‘paranthas’, draws gourmets even from the distant places.

Last night two groups of students from the local management institute had come to blows at this restaurant. The bone of contention? Each group wanted to be the first to savour the delicious ‘paranthas’. One group had placed the order earlier, but the students who came a little later said they would have them first as they were feeling very hungry.

The arguments led to fisticuffs soon and some students then had their teeth broken, while others were nursing broken bones and bruises in the free-for-all.

The restaurant, just opposite the Ishan Management Institute in Gama sector under Kasna police, is thronged by people from different sectors–mostly students or bachelors living alone.

The second group of students, who were numerically stronger, had an upper hand in the brawl. As the young men came to blows, many shopkeepers in the market downed the shutters and fled. However, some shopkeepers intervened and brought peace among the students.

This is the fourth incident during the last few days. In all the incidents, the students just flee before the police reach the spot. Residents and shopkeepers are feeling insecure due to frequent clashes among the student community.

New garment care methodology
Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, November 26
The corporate companies here are coming up with innovations to boost their business prospects.

While food courts, fast food joints, specially designed apartments and malls are already making changes in the lifestyle of Gurgaon and other constitutive parts of the NCR, commercial laundry based on the sophisticated technology and scientific method is being launched to cater to every section of society such as domestic, hospital and hotel in the region.

Gem Kleen Kare Pvt Ltd, billed as a garment and fabric care unit, with the technical support of a Swedish multinational firm, Electrolux and another company, Ramsons, has set up a plant in Manesar, which is to begin functioning soon.

Mr Neal Milch, the vice-president of Electrolux, considered a pioneer in garment and fabric care technology, said in his presentation here today that Gurgaon was chosen for the plant as a sort of experiment due to its special characteristics.

There is a rising trend in Gurgaon where both husband and wife are being office-goers thanks to the high rate of industrialisation and urbanisation, the study suggested.

There is also a large-scale upward mobility in the social ladder, leading to the bulge in the middle class spectrum of society in the city.

This new group in society has an increased purchasing power and the day is not far when people will get their garments laundered through a high-class technology as is the case in advanced European countries, Mr Neal Milch added.

Mr Rohit Jain, director of Gem Kleen Kare Pvt Ltd, said that his firm would soon set up it plants with the technical support of Electrolux and the plan was to cater to the NCR zone. Later, the catchment area of the firm would be expanded, he added.

Mr P.K.Jain, the immediate past president of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), who was present at the presentation by Mr Milch, is said to be behind the idea of introducing the new project of garment care in the country.

He said that the business of garment care that began in Gurgaon, is likely to catch up in other parts of the country.

Mr Sunder Balani, director of Ramsons, which is a specialised firm in the upkeep of the technology involved in Gem Kleen Kare Pvt Ltd, also echoed the same views.
