GNEC students meet Vedanti
Principal rules out removal of ‘erring’ teacher

Ludhiana, September 16
Agitating students of Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College (GNEC) met Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti at Alamgir Gurdwara since it is run by the SGPC management. They claim that Mr Vedanti gave them assurance that if an inquiry indicted Dr J.N. Jha, his services would be terminated.

PAU suspends two employees
Ludhiana, September 16
Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has suspended its two employees who were allegedly booked in May this year in a dowry harassment case.

PAU institutes award for extension worker
Ludhiana, September 16
The PAU Academic Council has approved the institution of an award in the memory of Dr (Ms) Satwant Kaur for the best extension worker. Dr V.K. Sharma, Registrar, said the award will be given every year to the best extension worker which includes Rs 3100 in cash and a citation. The amount for this award was deposited last year by Col Chanan Singh Dhillon, father of Dr Satwant Kaur Bhangu.

Congress hits back at BJP over flag burning
Ludhiana, September 16
Reacting to the burning of its flag by some activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Congress today hit back at the party describing it as an act of "sheer frustration and madness". Congress leaders, including district president Jagmohan Sharma, senior vice-president of the Pradesh Youth Congress Pawan Dewan and secretary of the Pradesh Congress Committee Mr Parminder Mehta flayed the BJP for burning the Congress flag.

Kalakh hospital a picture of neglect

The hospital in Kalakh village has been without power for more than two years.The hospital, according to official records, has to cater to the needs of at least eight villages of the area - Kalakh, Majri, Rangoowal, Jurahan, Narangwal Kalan, Narangwal Khurd, Assi Kalan and Kote Aggan.

N.K Mehta Motivating youth to join armed forces through cinema

Pak MP to visit city
Ludhiana, September 16
Member Parliament and Chairman of the Tourism Department of Pakistan, Mr Rai Aziz Ullah Khan, would be visiting Ludhiana on September 24. This was stated today by Mr Gurcharan Singh, chairman of the Baba Bulleh Shah Foundation, who said that the ADGP, Dr G.S. Aujla, and the Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana, Mr Anurag Verma, would preside over a function organised by the trust to honour the guest from across the border.

2 crushed to death by train
Doraha, September 16
Two persons were crushed to death under a train while two others were injured by a car at Kaddon chowk, early this morning. Dharampal Singh of Doraha town committed suicide by throwing himself before the train. He was mentally upset over the past few months. The police has initiated investigations under section 174 of CRPC. Also Surjit Singh who was coming back to his village after dropping his children at school, was caught unawares and crushed to death under a train.

Complainant ‘beaten up’ by police
Jagraon, September 16
A complainant who went to a police station to lodge a report against a tractor driver whose vehicle had hit the jeep in which he was travelling was allegedly beaten up by police personnel.

Police-public interface organised
Machhiwara, September 16
A police-public meeting was held here yesterday. The meeting was presided over by the DIG, Ludhiana, Mr Prag Jain and the SSP, Khanna, Mr Parmod Bann. The speakers at the meeting raised issues like the sale of drugs and the safety of the arhtiyas on the Samrala-Machhiwara road.

Dr Hamrahi’s book on city released

“Ludhiana Bolda Hai,” a book authored by a Punjabi writer, Dr Atam Hamrahi, depicting all aspects of the city, was released here today by Mr Anurag Verma, Deputy Commissioner, at a function organised by the Baba Bulle Shah Foundation.

Gold, cash looted from dera
Khanna, September 16
Six robbers attacked a dera in Jarg village last night and looted 130 grams of gold and cash. At about 1am, the robbers entered the dera of Baba Shah Tota Ji and tied up two persons of the dera in a room. Four robbers went into the bedroom of dera chief Baba Swarn Dass and his wife Jasbir Kaur and forced them to get the room of their son and daughter-in-law opened.

Proclaimed offender arrested
Khanna, September 16
A proclaimed offender, who had been on the run for the past eight years, was arrested yesterday. Karnail Singh, son of Gurmeet Singh of Mulan Pur, under the Dakha police station, was arrested in 1994 under Section 304-A. But he absconded.

Stress on sharing farm knowledge in Asia 
Ludhiana, September 16
Farm scientists, extension specialists and farmers from India, Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka today underlined the need for preserving natural resources and cutting the input costs in the production of crops like wheat and rice. For this they suggested that the countries in the region could cooperate and share their knowledge and expertise.

PSHRC order on private-aided schools

The Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) has recommended to the state government to direct the state Education Department to ensure that the aid given to the private-aided schools is not misused.

DHO askes vendors to keep eatables covered
Mandi Ahmedgarh, September 16
The district health authorities have asked the traders and the establishments engaged in preparation and sale of eatables to maintain hygienic conditions at their places, besides maintaining quality of the products. The team collected 14 samples from various shops from here and surrounding villages. The samples were sent to a government laboratory for testing the purity of the products.

Govt college boys finish third
Ludhiana, September 16
The students of the local Satish Chander Dhawan Government College for Boys finished third in the Panjab University Inter College Softball Tournament held at the university campus at Chandigarh.
