The APHC chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, here today alleged that the Central Government planned to eliminate him and his associates and that he had received threats to this effect. He was speaking on the occasion of the burial of his associate and political secretary, Peer Hissamuddin, who fell to the bullets of unidentified gunmen here yesterday.

Fencing has checked infiltration, says Vij
Srinagar, September 16
Describing the border fencing as a successful experiment to check infiltration, the Chief of the Army Staff, General N.C. Vij, said today that only 27 infiltrators had sneaked into this side during August.

Asserting that Manorama Devi, whose death in the custody of the Assam Rifles created furore in Manipur, had “questionable credentials”, Army Chief N.C. Vij said there were reports of her “underground” connections.

CRPF constable among four killed
Strike hits life in valley

Srinagar, September 16
A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan and a girl were among four persons killed while security forces arrested two militants in the Kashmir valley overnight, an official spokesman said today.

He said a CRPF constable Ashok Kumar, who was injured in a Fidayeen attack on a camp near Dal Lake on September 12, died in the hospital this morning.

Mr Kumar was injured after he killed one Fidayeen soon after they stormed the camp.

Two senior CRPF officers also lost their lives in the attack besides both the Fidayeen were killed in the night-long gunbattle.

The spokesman said militants shot dead Ruksana Anjum at Desson village in south Kashmir district of Anantnag this afternoon.

Militants also killed Bilal Ahmad Khan at Kreeri Pattan while another person, Mohammad Yousuf, was shot at and critically wounded at fruit mandi, Sopore, today.

Security forces gunned down a militant at Arang Gool last night.

He said security forces also arrested one militant each at Narkara Badgam and Rafiabad in Baramulla last night.

A Pakistani national was apprehended by the BSF at Gharana area in R.S. Pura sub-sector here, official sources said today.

Murid Hussain, 26, was cutting grass in a field last evening when a BSF patrol party spotted him, they said.

They said Hussain, a resident of Sialkot in Pakistan, was later handed over to the Pakistani Rangers.

A Junior Commissioned Officer was injured when an improvised explosive device planted by militants exploded in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir , official sources said here today.

Suspected militants had planted the IED in Limber Link road in Ramban area which exploded when an Army team was on patrol last night, the sources said, adding JCO Naib Subedar Romesh Gopal was critically injured in the blast.

Meanwhile, normal life was partially affected in the Kashmir valley owing to a general strike call by the breakaway Hurriyat Conference in protest against the killing of its leader Peer hissamudding by some unidentified gunmen at Qamarwari.

Shops and business establishments in the civil lines, including historic Lal Chowk and Budshah Chowk, the nerve centre of the summer capital, remained closed.

However, the strike did not have any impact on the transport services.

Work in the government run educational institutions and offices was affected because of the two-day pen down strike by several unions and federations of the employees in support of their demands, including merger of 50 per cent DA with the basic pay. — PTI, UNI

The APHC chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, here today alleged that the Central Government planned to eliminate him and his associates and that he had received threats to this effect.

He was speaking on the occasion of the burial of his associate and political secretary, Peer Hissamuddin, who fell to the bullets of unidentified gunmen here yesterday.

A large number of people were present on the occasion at Idgah here this afternoon. Geelani claimed that the government had newly constituted, what he called “territorial force” on the pattern of Ikhwan, a counter-insurgent force for the purpose.

“Its men have threatened that Geelani and his men would not be tolerated for long”, he said. Referring to that Indo-Pak talks, Geelani stressed the need to have Kashmir as the basis of the talks and reiterated his stand on the tripartite talks to resolve the issue. He expressed concern over the continued killings, excesses and harassment of the innocent in of Kashmir.

Fencing has checked infiltration, says Vij

Describing the border fencing as a successful experiment to check infiltration, the Chief of the Army Staff, General N.C. Vij, said today that only 27 infiltrators had sneaked into this side during August.

There had been heavy infiltration attempts by militants from across the border this summer.

Talking to mediapersons after the Colour Presentation ceremony to three battalions of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment here this morning, General Vij said nearly 500 militants were ready for infiltration.

Asked about the training camps on the other side of the border, the Army Chief said there was no change and the militants continued to get training.

Referring to the incidents of violence, he held that the militants were after soft targets and “killed their own men”.

The Army Chief said the number of foreign militants presently operating in the state was about 800 and the member had come down by about 50 per cent.

After his arrival here yesterday, he visited forward areas and interacted with commanders and troops.

He was accompanied by Lt Gen Hari Prasad, GOC-in-C Northern Command, and Lt Gen Nirbhay Sharma, GOC of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps.

Earlier in his address, General Vij commended the role of the troops of JAK LI. He also presented a trophy to the JAK LI and was presented with a memento by Lt Gen Hari Prasad.

The Colours were presented on behalf of the President. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, DGP Gopal Sharma and senior police officers, were present on the occasion.

Manorama had underground links: Army Chief

Srinagar, September 16
Asserting that Manorama Devi, whose death in the custody of the Assam Rifles created furore in Manipur, had “questionable credentials”, Army Chief N.C. Vij said there were reports of her “underground” connections.

“The credentials of this woman are concerned, they are questionable. She had from all accounts links with the underground. There are reports available on that,” he told reporters here.

“Even the state Chief Minister was on record having said this,” he added.

Referring to the post-mortem report of Manorama which reportedly ruled out her rape in the custody, the Army Chief said “It has come out clearly that there is no rape and I

think this is one fact which must reach everyone.”

Strong protests were made by the locals after the body of 30-year-old Manorama Devi, who was picked up from her house by the Assam Rifles after serving an arrest memorandum on July 10, was found on July 11. The incident also triggered a series of agitations against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. — PTI
