Proxy war between government, Chancellor hots up Rohtak, June 11 According to reliable sources the pro-Chancellor lobby in the university was cut up with Dr Rajan as it felt that he had while recording the minutes toned down the decision of the council of May 31 which amended the statute governing qualifications for the post of VC. This was considered an effort to help the government whose hands would have been bound after the amendment. The pro-Chancellor lobby stepped up its campaign against Dr Rajan and non-teaching employees staged a demonstration against him. The university late last evening issued a press release saying Dr Bhardwaj had been given charge of the post of Registrar. Throughout the day today, rumours were circulating on the campus regarding the status of Dr Rajan. Yesterday an impression had been given that he would be sent back to his parent department (IMSAR). This, however, did not come about at least today. The pro-government lobby tried its best to create an impression that he was to go on a study tour of certain states to assess the examination systems of different universities and that he would be back in the saddle on his return. But Dr Rajan was very much in town. It is now learnt that the government is planning to hold interviews for the post of registrar shortly. The applications for the post were invited late last year. The pro-government lobby hopes that Dr Rajan will be back after the interviews as a regular Registrar thus thwarting the designs of the pro-Chancellor lobby. Another possibility being discussed is to post IAS officers as registrars of all universities of Haryana to ensure that the Chancellor does not have his way. Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding the search panel for selecting the new VC refuses to die. It is learnt that the Chancellor’s nominee Dr Ramesh Chandra, has now sought to know from the government the statute — amended or the original — which should be taken into consideration for the appointment of the new VC. Amidst all this the academic community is unhappy at the manner in which the government is undermining the autonomy of the university to prove its supremacy and also the games the pro-Chancellor lobby is playing to counter the government’s efforts. A senior professor said that instead of a place of teaching and research, MDU had become a hotbed of palace-type intrigues and dirty politicking. |
Campaign
to field Ajay for RS seat Chandigarh, June 11 The sources say the MLAs will ostensibly go to the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, from Mr Kadian’s residence to inquire after his health. Mr Chautala is reportedly suffering from a urinary tract infection. But the MLAs have been reportedly told by a powerful leader of the INLD that they should impress upon Mr Chautala to field his elder son, Ajay, for the Rajya Sabha elections. The INLD is sure to win one of the two seats falling vacant in Haryana. The party had earlier authorised Mr Chautala to nominate the party candidates for the Rajya Sabha poll. Mr Chautala had said at that time that the ticket would be given to those persons who firmly believed in and followed the policies of the former Deputy Prime Minister, the late Devi Lal. The sources say in a repeat of what had happened in the Congress when Mrs Indira Gandhi had brought her son, Rajiv, into politics “under pressure from the party rank and file”, the INLD MLAs are expected to “force” Mr Chautala to throw the dice in favour of Ajay. Mr Chautala may bow to their wishes as a true democrat. |

Orders to avoid harassment to motorists Yamunanagar, June 11 Checking of motor vehicles for the purpose of payment of taxes, including excise and sales tax, and compliance with the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 (MVA) will be conducted by joint teams, comprising the Departments of Transport, Police and Excise and Taxation. The checking of vehicles will be done at various tax collection points
(TCPs) of the State Transport Department located on entry – exit points on the state boundary. In Rohtak district (which does not have boundary with any other state), the District Transport Officer in consultation with the SP and Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner will fix the schedule of checking. Sources said the order had been issued to “avoid harassment to the public and duplication of efforts on the part of the various state government agencies” in checking of vehicles under the MVA. Now the checking would be carried out in a coordinated and integrated manner by the various government agencies, claimed an official. The official claimed that the state government had taken the step to avoid harassment to the public. A banner bearing the names of the officers and their departments would be displayed at all checking spots. He added that at times checking could be conducted at suitable points within the state by joint teams. However, such checking would be conducted only during the daytime. The sources added that now individual government officials, including cops, had been prohibited from checking vehicles in the name of the MVA. It was alleged that cops, especially posted at Police Control Room (PCR) vehicles, were harassing public. Meanwhile, the Yamunanagar Deputy Commissioner, Mr Vijayender Kumar, said to curb the unauthorised plying of motor vehicles like maxi-cabs would be checked jointly by the police, Transport Department and Haryana Roadways. A special campaign in the connection would be launched on June 15 in the district.

YC men protest against erratic power supply Rohtak, June 11 Mr Batra said the district was being discriminated against because it had elected a Congress legislator and Lok Sabha member. He said while other districts were being supplied ample power, Rohtak was not getting enough to meet even half of its requirements. He criticised the Chief Minister for singling out the district for such maltreatment. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner which alleged that the town was not getting power continuously for even eight hours. There was an acute shortage of potable water and roads and streets were in a state of disrepair. Unhygienic conditions prevailed in the town and heaps of garbage could be seen all over. Sewers were overflowing and mosquitoes were breeding despite it being the peak of summer. There was no check on pollution caused by hundreds of three-wheelers plying for almost 20 hours a day on the main roads passing through thickly populated areas. The memorandum pointed to the increasing incidence of crime in the area and alleged that the administration had failed to curb crime. |
