BAN HAILED: Principal H.S.Bajwa, president, of the Intellectual Cell, Punjab, and Mr Davinder-pal, president, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, Gurdaspur District on Sunday hailed the ban on smoking at public places.

BATHINDA
AASRA GESTURE: The Aasra Welfare Society on Sunday donated six units of blood to four patients of the city. The society has also installed eight drinking water tanks at various places in the city.

BAN ON LIQUOR: The Deputy Commissioner Cum District Magistrate and District Returning Officer Faridkot has banned the sale of liquor for three days from May 8 to May 10 in the district. The order applies to hotels, restaurants, dhabas and the bars.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
FIBROID REMOVED: A team of doctors, led by Dr Jatinder Iqbal Saggu, retired senior gynaecologist from the PGI removed a rare fibroid of 16 cm weighing approximately 4kg from uterus by performing hysterectomy at Mahesh Hospital, Sirhind on Monday. According to Dr Saggu, patient Jaspal Kaur, resident of Bhamarsi, had been having bleeding for the past one year. The operation took three hours.

VISIT: A group of 131 students from Narain Public School, Patiala led by Principal P.K. Arora, visited the historical district, Fatehgarh Sahib on Monday. The students paid obeisance at Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib. They visited Roza Sharif, Aam Khas Bagh and Floating Restaurant, Sirhind. The students had interaction with Mr S.K.Ahluwalia, Deputy Commissioner at Bachat Bhavan.

HOSHIARPUR
NDA ANTI-FARMER: Mr Ajit Singh Parmar, who is contesting as a Samaj-wadi Janata Party (R) candidate from Hoshiarpur Constituency here on Sunday said that the NDA government was anti-farmer as it had increased the prices of petrol, diesel and other agriculture inputs.

POLL CODE VIOLATED: On the complaint of Gurdarshan Singh, Executive Officer Municipal Council, Tanda, the police registered a case against the BJP and the CPM for the violation of election code on Saturday. Both parties displayed election posters of Mr Avinash Rai Khanna (BJP) and Mr Darshan Singh Mattu (CPM) at Bus stand, Civil Hospital and Telephone poles etc. in Tanda Town.

TWO ARRESTED: The police here seized 20 kg of poppy husk from Ravinder Kumar alias Veka of Ravi Dass Nagar here and Ram Singh of Bilari (Rajasthan). The accused were arrested under the NDPS Act.

TWO DIE IN MISHAPS: Parveen Kumar of Challa Chuck died on the spot and his brother Parminder Singh was wounded seriously when a Tata Sumo No (HP-01H-2612) hit their scooter ( PB-10T-2815) near Bains Awan on Saturday. In another accident Chaman Lal of Sagnai village, a railway employee at Nasrala , was crushed to death by a car near Nasrala adda on Saturday. The car driver fled the scene. The police has registered a case.

LUDHIANA
YOUTH CONVENTION: The Punjab students and youth organisation will organise a convention on Tuesday at 7.30 p.m. The problems of the youth will be discussed. Punjabi singer personality Harbhajan Mann will be the guest of honour. Prof Bawa Singh, former Vice-Chairman, National Commission for Minorities, and Prof S. S. Aujla, educationist, will be the main speaker. Mr Balwant Singh Ramoowalia, a former Union Minister, will preside over the function.

ACTIVITY WEEK: An activity week for tiny tots of Cherryfields Nursery School, Atam Nagar, began here on Monday. Contests for poetry recitation were held in which more than 60 students of pre-nursery and nursery took part. Komalpreet won the first prize the nursery class students. Bhandeep Arneja was declared second. Sashwat came third. In the pre-nursery section, Akshay Munjal won the first prize, Gurbaksh was declared second while Gagandeep Singh stood third.

PROFESSOR INVITED: The Haryana Urdu Academy has invited Professor Bhupinder Parihar, Head, Department of English, Government College for Boys, to present a paper in the national seminar on “Evolution of Urdu nazm”. Professor Samin Hanfi form Jamila Millia Islamia University will preside over. Azhar Javed, editor of Takhleeq, will be the chief guest.

MILEAGE TEST: A test conducted on Monday by Auto India found that Kinetic Velocity gave a mileage of 66 km per litre in city conditions while Hero Honda Splendor gave a mileage of 57 km per litre. Hero Honda Passion gave a mileage of 56 km per litre and TVS Centra gave a mileage of 57.8 km per litre.

LAUNCHED: Freelook launched its Spring Summer-2004 collection. Mr Avinash Goyal, managing director of the company, said here on Monday the collection was designed keeping in mind international trends.

Books distributed: The Shri Parshuram Book Bank Society, Jagraon, organised a book distribution function at Spring Dew Senior Secondary Public School, 4 km from here. About 1,000 students, were given books on the occasion. Mr Rakesh Pandey, Minister of State for Printing and Stationery, termed the occasion as the distribution of light of wisdom to the students. Mr Raj Kapoor, chairman, and Mr Bikram Sharma, president of the society, also spoke on the occasion.

POLL ARRANGEMENT REVIEWED: Mr Nathan Election Observer (general) for Phillaur constituency along with Mr Harjit Inder Singh Grewal, Deputy Commissioner, Mr Vikas Garg, ADC, Mr M.F. Farooqui , SSP, Mr Kulbir Singh, SDM, Mr Sukhdev Lal Tehsildar (Elections), visited Nawanshahr and Banga Assembly segments to take stock of poll arrangements.

IMA OFFICE-BEARERS: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Indian Medical Association, Banga: president — Dr Bachan Singh Bains; secretary- Dr Daljit Singh and treasurer-Dr Sukhwinder Singh.

BOOKS DISTRIBUTED: The Lions Club (Nawanshahr city) distributed books and notebooks among students of Tara Singh Kahma Memorial School here on Sunday. The school is run by the Doaba Sewa Samiti Headed by social worker Baba Naubat Rai for educating children of slum dwellers.

PCCTU: Dr Rashpal Singh of Multani Mal Modi College was elected president of the Patiala unit of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) at a meeting held here on Monday. Prof Jatinderdev Singh of Public College, Samana, and Mr Harcharan Singh of M.M. Modi College were elected secretary and press secretary, respectively.

DECLAMATION: Sambhav Jain of Aurobindo International School and Kanwalpreet Singh of Budha Dal School bagged the first and second positions, respectively, in an inter-school declamation contest organised by the Rotary Club in memory of Dr K.C Saronwala at Surya Complex here on Monday. Dheeraj Gothol and Mehak Walia shared the third position. The Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Mr Manvesh Singh Sidhu, was the chief guest.

DEAF AND DUMB: Students of School for Deaf and Dumb-cum-Home for Blind organised a cultural programme here on Monday. The Managing Director, State Bank of Patiala, Mr A.K. Das was the chief guest. Mr Das presented a computer, along with a printer, to the school. The secretary of the society, Col Karaminder Singh, presented a vote of thanks.

SANGRUR
NEWSMEN TO BOYCOTT DHINDSA: Member of the Democratic Press Club, Punjab, Bhawanigarh on Sunday decided to boycott election coverage of Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, SAD candidate from Sangrur as he allegedly “misbehaved” with the mediapersons at Kakra village. Mr Dhindsa denied the incident.
