300 Nirankaris donate blood

Chandigarh, May 3
About 300 Nirankari devotees donated blood at a camp organised by Sant Nirankari Mandal at Satsang Bhawan in Mauli Jagran today.

Punjab’s Director-General of Police (Prisons) inaugurated the camp. He applauded the contribution of the Nirankari Mission which had organised more than 100 such camps all over the country every year.

Dr Ravneet of the Blood Bank, Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32, supervised the team of 15 members for collection of 205 units of blood. Earlier 423 units of blood were collected at a camp organised last week.

The camps were organised to commemorate memory of former head of the mission, Baba Gurcharan Singh and other martyrs.

Deepika, Raghav win inter-school TT titles

Chandigarh, May 3
Deepika Aggarwal of Carmel Convent, Nahan and Raghav of St Kabir School, Sector 26, emerged winners in the girls and boys singles, respectively, in the ICSE Inter-School Table Tennis Tournament — 2004 played here today at the Tender Heart School, Sector 33.

Later, St Kabir School boys also won the team championship by defeating Tender Heart School 33 — by 3-1. The school teams which took part in this event included: Saupin’s School, Panchkula, St Xavier’s School, Panchkula, St Kabir School, Sector 26, Carmel Convent, Nahan, DAV School, Dera Bassi, St Stephen’s School, Sector 45 and hosts Tender Heart School.

Results: finals: Girls singles: Deepika b Priyangi (Carmel Convent) 3-2; boys singles; Raghav (St Kabir) b Arsh Monga (Tender Heart) 4-0. semi-finals: girls:Deepika b Kalyani (TH-33) 3-2; Priyangi (CC, Nahan) b Shubhangi (CC, Nahan) 3-2.

Team championship: Finals — St Kabir b Tender Heart 3-1 (Ravish lost to Karan 5-11, 3-11, 5-11); Raghav b Arsh (11-7,11-8,11-7); Raghwinder b Akhil (17-13, 7-11, 14-16, 11-5); Raghav b Karan (11-5, 11-6, 11-8).

Semi-finals: Ist: Tender Heart b St Xavier’s, Panchkula 3-0 (Karamveer b Tushar 11-2, 11-6, 11-4; Arsh b Abhimanyu 11-0, 11-8, 11-4; Kalyani b Trevor S Shear 11-5, 11-4, 11-4.

Rock Rovers, ITBP in hockey finals

Chandigarh, May 3
Rock Rovers and the ITBP made it to the finals of the second Dharam Singh Memorial six-a-side hockey tournament after winning in the semifinals played under the floodlights in the Sector 18 hockey stadium here today.

In the first semi-finals played, Rock Rovers had a narrow 12-11 win over the CISF who managed to lead till the half time with score of 6-5. It was Davinder Kumar of Rock Rovers who scored nine goals, Vikram Saini two goals while Saurabh Bishnoi one goal. For losers, Navad Jamal fielded four goals while Mangra Munda scored three goals.

In the second semi-finals, both ITBP and Wanders Club played a nerve-wrecking game. Both were tied at 14-14 till the stipulated hours. Later in the extra time, the ITBP won by 19-18.

Mount Carmel surge ahead in netball meet

Hosts Mount Carmel School, Sector 47, surged ahead by winning their matches in both girls and boys sections in the first UT sub-junior netball championship which began here today on the school premises. The two-day meet is being held under the aegis of the Netball Association of Chandigarh. Earlier the meet was inaugurated by Mr Charles Samuel, Principal of the host school.

Badminton camp

Kannu Aggarwal and Pallavi Aggarwal of Panchkula have been selected by the Badminton Association of India to attend the all-India coaching camp for badminton in sub-junior boys and girls under-16 sections to be held from May 20 to June 9 at Panaji, Goa. Mr TR Tuli, general secretary of the District Badminton Association, Panchkula, said the girls had attended one month’s training in Malaysia last year.

Kannu Aggarwal played a pivotal role for the Haryana team which won both girls under-19 and women’s titles in the North Zone inter-state badminton championship held in Shimla in September, 2003.

Adhiraj Neogi from Panchkula and Oscar Bansal of Chandigarh were the two boys of the region kept in the reserves list for the camp. The camp will be conducted by senior badminton coaches R.N. Ghosh and Balanchandran Nair.

Food licence issue resolved

The responsibility of the issuance of licences to manufacturers of food products has been given to the Municipal Corporation.
A decision to this effect was taken in a meeting presided over by the UT Administrator, Justice O.P. Verma (retd). The Administrator said the Administration should move according to the bylaws and the corporation should be entrusted the responsibility of issuing licences manufacturers of food products, including meat products. However, the local Health Department would retain the authority of checking adulteration of food products under the PFA Act.

Justice Verma asked the Finance Secretary to issue clarification and asked the corporation to start issuing licenses to the manufacturers of food products, hotels, restaurants, etc for the units, shops located in its limit.

There was confusion and conflict regarding jurisdiction and authority as far as the power of issuing the licences is concerned under the PFA Act, which gets resolved with this decision.

Launch drive to check power theft, Verma tells Chief Engineer

The UT Administrator, Justice O.P. Verma (retd), today asked the Chief Engineer to launch a concerted drive to check power theft, especially by bulk consumers like industrial sectors and commercial units.

Justice Verma said that distribution losses of 24.5 per cent being recorded by the Electricity Department of Chandigarh were not acceptable.

This should be brought below 10 per cent. Justice Verma asked the Chief Engineer to strengthen the vigilance network of the Electricity Department and take action under the Act against the units found stealing the power.
