PSHRC orders probe in police torture case 
Ludhiana, April 17
The Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) has come to the rescue of a Mohali resident, who was allegedly tortured by the Khanna police over a land dispute on March 31. The man suffered burn injuries after a policeman threw acid on him while in police custody.

Dust clouds over city
Ludhiana, April 17
Dust clouds have engulfed the city for the past 24 hours. In this city which has suspended particulate matter 600 mg on a normal day dust clouds are causing breathing problems and eye allergies and poor visibility.

Two Satluj Club office-bearers suspended
Ludhiana, April 17
The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Aggarwal, who is also the president of the prestigious Satluj Club, has placed the recently elected general secretary, Mr Gurinderjit Singh Laddi and bar secretary, Mr Rocky Malhotra under suspension. This follows the detection of discrepancies in the accounts of the club bar. The disparities were reportedly found during a raid conducted by the Excise Department on the club late last night.

Galib yet to join campaign for Tiwari
Ludhiana, April 17
Mr Gurcharan Singh Galib, former Congress MP from Ludhiana, is yet to join the campaign of the party candidate, Mr Manish Tiwari. He was supposed to participate in the party’s campaign in the Kila Raipur Assembly segment, but he said he was busy in some family function. He said he was with the party and all his supporters had been campaigning for Mr Tiwari.

The BJP-SAD alliance has claimed that the fight for the Ludhiana parliamentary seat was between them and the Congress, and not a triangular contest as being claimed by Lok Bhalai Party chief Balwant Singh Ramoowalia.

Workshop for pharmacy students
Ludhiana, April 17
The GGN Khalsa College of Pharmacy, Civil Lines, organised its annual interactive workshop ‘Impetus-2004’ here today. The aim of the workshop was to acquaint the students with the latest trends in pharmaceutical industry, marketing principles, biotechnology-based drug therapies and insight into current legal fundamentals in drug laws. The chief guest was Mr Dinesh Gupta, Drug Inspector, Ludhiana. Mr Kuldip Singh, the Director of the college, presided over the function.

Inter-school art exhibition opens

In order to promote art and culture in Ludhiana, Camlin in association with TAC Art Gallery today opened a week-long inter-school art exhibition here today. The purpose was to encourage the schoolchildren to develop and inculcate artistic ability in them. The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr M.S. Seekree, Director, Khalsa Institute of Management and Technology, Civil Lines.

City boys record second win
Ludhiana, April 17
Varun Chitkara, Gagandeep Dhand and Jashanpreet Sidhu shared the spoils as Ludhiana won by a huge margin of 183 runs over Jalandhar in the Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Tournament (u-15) for the Sushil Bali Trophy at the Burlton Park, Jalandhar, today. They captured three wickets each.
