EC lists alternative documents for casting ballot

The Chandigarh Administration yesterday said as per the directions of the Election Commission of India, people, who did not have voter identity cards, would have to produce an alternative document for establishing their identity at polling stations to cast their ballot in the Lok Sabha elections.

Chautala to address rally in city
Chandigarh, April 17
Mr Om Prakash Chautala, Chief Minister of Haryana and Mr Farooq Abdullah, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, will address a rally in support of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) candidate Harmohan Dhawan tomorrow. Mr Dhawan was weighed in coins at a function in Sector 46 here. He was welcomed by Mr Balwinder Singh, president of the market executive committee. Mr Balwinder Singh said both Congress and the BJP had betrayed the citizens of the city.

Left-out voters have time till April 20
Chandigarh, April 17
The last date to receive applications for inclusion of names on the voters’ list for the Chandigarh parliamentary constituency has been advanced to April 20 from April 23. This will be the last chance for city residents to be on the voters’ list for the elections to the Lok Sabha to be held in the city on May 10.

Two vehicle thieves held
Mohali, April 17
In two separate incidents, the police here today arrested two persons on charges of stealing vehicles. While Davinder Singh Bittu was caught for stealing a Maruti car from Phase IIIB2, Gamdoor Singh was caught for trying to sell a stolen motor cycle in Phase XI here.

Mystery shrouds the death a 22-year-old factory worker, Havinder Singh, whose body was found from the fields of Satabgarh, near here, yesterday. According to information, Harvinder, a resident of Bhankharpur village, who was a driver with a local factory, had returned from duty on April 15 evening.

City to host Nasscom meet on IT

The Chandigarh IT Club in association with Nasscom will organise a conference on “Business Opportunities and Challenges in ITES-BPO & IT - Mantras for Success” on April 24. In keeping with directions received from the University Grants Commission (UGC), Panjab University’s faculty of science has recommended making environment education a compulsory subject for first-year students of colleges affiliated to the university from the forthcoming session.

Students relieved after re-examination
Chandigarh, April 17
Around 11,000 students today appeared in the re-examination of the all-India pre-medical entrance examination at 22 centres in the city. No untoward incident was reported during the three-hour examination. The examination was held during the school timings.

NGO’s initiative to spread peace

Bird sanctuary of Art College a parking lot!
Severe encroachment upon the green space in the backyard of the Government College of Art, Sector 10, has reduced the beauty of the land to a naught. Chandigarh outplayed Minor District team by eight wickets in the Punjab District Under 15 Sushil Bali Trophy Cricket Tournament match played here at the MCA grounds, Mohali, today. Batting first, Minor District XI were bowled out for 216 runs with Simran scoring unbeaten 47 runs followed by Abhinav who scored 25 runs.
