GE Foundation has awarded a grant of Rs. 17 lakh to Vidya, an 18-year-old NGO working to educate the underprivileged children.

GE Foundation has awarded a grant of Rs. 17 Lakh to Vidya, an 18-year-old NGO working to educate and empower underprivileged children. The grant commissioned by GE Foundation will support Vidya’s Bridge Course and covers teacher’s tuition fees and related expenses for books and stationery.

The grant has been upgraded this year; last year the grant amounted to Rs. 9.5 lakh. Scott R Bayman, President and CEO, GE India, said, “The GE Foundation and GE Elfun Volunteers have teamed up to support Vidya’s Bridge Course. This is an innovative programme that encourages and guides young adults who have dropped out of school. The programme allows them to re-enter mainstream education while laying a foundation for a lifetime of learning”.

Vidya educates teenagers from underprivileged homes who have failed exams, lost confidence and want to make a comeback. GE Elfun volunteers, it was pointed out, have identified 35 bright children who dropped out of school mainly due to lack of parental and financial support.

Highlighting the success of the programme, it was pointed out that over the past three years, the pass percentage has been over 90 per cent with all students who passed class X, and decided to study further to clear class XII as well.

Parents assured of full support

The Delhi Abhibhavak Mahasangh has put forth a demand that Delhi Government should issue necessary directions to the concerned schools to admit the students of poor families and provide them freeship.

The demand was made in the wake of the directions made by the Delhi High Court regarding the admission of students from economically weaker sections in private schools, which have been allotted land on discounted prices by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).

The President of the DAM, Mr. Vijendra Gupta, has assured parents of the organisations’ full support in the issue.

PRINCIPALSPEAK
Where the mind is without fear

“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high; ...

Into that heaven of freedom, my father, Let my country awake.”

Tagore gave us this noble vision and our glorious freedom fighters and leaders firmly, yet peacefully, strived towards the realisation of this great Indian dream. Where then did the ‘clear stream of reason’ lose its direction? Today we stand like puppets looking westwards for inspiration, creatures of dead habit, gripped by materialistic dreams and selfish pursuits, which seem to have desensitized our finer emotions, our love for country, our home and our self-esteem. As we celebrate our 54th Republic Day let bitter cynicism that has clouded our vision be cleared and give way to a resolution of hope, optimism and determination and restore our pride.

“India is a rich nation. We are culturally rich, emotionally rich and intellectually rich. When the rest of the world had not yet awakened to the light of learning, we were studying science. We had invented the zero much before others saw the dawn of civilization.” Our warmth and hospitality are deeply appreciated the world over. Then why have we let a rich nation remain poor? Let us relearn our pride in our heritage and march on a journey towards prosperity, more importantly towards dignity.

As members of a society we are all interconnected. Deception by any segment, whether in government or business or social sphere may not appear outwardly injurious to anyone but they pollute the system and lower general moral standards. I narrate a story that is exemplary.

‘One day a farmer, walking down the street in a small town came across a large stone in the middle of his path. The farmer complained: “Who could be so careless as to leave such a big stone on the road? Why does someone not remove it? He went away complaining. The next day the same thing happened with a milkman. He too went away grumbling but left the stone as it was. Then one day, a student came across the stone. Worried that someone may fall over it and hurt himself, he decided to push it aside. He pushed long and hard all by himself and eventually managed to remove the stone from the path. He came back and noticed a piece of paper where the stone was kept. He picked the paper and opened it. Inside was written,” You are the true wealth of this nation.”

Service to society is the rent that we pay for the spaces we occupy on this Earth. The wealth of a nation is not in material things but rests on the integrity, courage and conviction of its citizens. ‘All great nations write their autobiographies through action or inaction of the citizens. We need to decide whether we are part of the solution or part of the problem.’ Public activity is a citizen’s highest responsibility. In fact, indifference to public welfare is a major cause for collective downfall. A heart that does not feel pain upon seeing the misery and injustice in the society is spiritually dead. “Watching citizens postpone facing reality is like watching a nation busily gathering material for its funeral.”

Well directed individual efforts can accomplish a great deal. In fact, such efforts encourage other individuals to join in, generating a momentum which is crucial to bring about change. If thousands of self-sacrificing individuals join in, a society becomes vibrant. A democracy can never die unless its citizens become indifferent, disunited and let an outsider take advantage of the cracks they can spot. As students it is vital to understand that public activity is a citizen’s highest responsibility.

Today this great democracy is on the path to economic progress. Let us participate actively in this process of growth and enhance it with rich moral values. We have a very just Constitution. Let us be proud of it. Also, we have become the flag bearers of peace and amity. A ‘Samjhuta’ is on the anvil and we all know peace is worth many failures. Let there be a prayer in every heart and a willingness to sacrifice all vested interests to build a great future for our respected country. Jai Hind.
