Urology award for PGI Director

Chandigarh, January 25
The PGI Director, Prof S.K. Sharma, has been awarded the Urology gold medal at the 37th annual conference of the Urological Society of India.
The conference was held at Kochi from January 21 to 24. The gold medal was awarded to Prof Sharma for his contribution in the field of urology.

Third leg of ITF meet from Feb 7

Chandigarh, January 25
The third leg of the ITF Junior Tennis Tournament for both boys and girls in below-18 will be organised in the Tennis Stadium, Sector 10, here from February 7 to 13. This is a Grade III tournament and top-ranked players drawn from 25 countries will vie for top honours to gain valuable points for the international grade tennis meet.

According to Mr Rajan Kashyap, chairman, Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association, the previous two legs of the meet will be held in Kolkata and New Delhi. While in Kolkata the meet will be held from January 26 to 31, in Delhi from February 2 to 7.

In Chandigarh, the qualifying rounds will be held on February 7 and 8, while the main round matches will begin from February 9. Players from the UK, Sweden, Holland, Russia, Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, Sri Lanka, Belgium, Czech Republic, Singapore, Croatia, Korea, Slovenia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Hong Kong will take part. The main draw will be of 32 in singles, while in doubles the draw will be of 16 in both singles and doubles.

The players will be lodged in the new residential hostel in the stadium, which is likely to be inaugurated next week. Mr Kashyap said the new residential wing would also house the CHART (Chandigarh Academy for Rural Tennis) players on a permanent basis. He said this scheme, which was launched in 1992, was established to tap talent from rural areas. He said the CLTA would tie-up with Western Command, Chandi Mandir, where 10 young trainees from the Army would join the CLTA coaching programme.

He said this would help the civilians to exchange their training ideas with defence personnel. An MoU in this regard would be signed on January 30, he said.

Chess meet begins

Chandigarh, January 25
Ajay Jaswal, Nitin and B.N. Prasad bagged three points each and lead in the Chandigarh Prize Money Chess Tournament — 2004, which began at Jawahar Navodya Vidyalya, Sector 25, here today. As many as 44 players are taking part in the tournament. The point position at the end of the third round are: Ajay Jaswal (3), Abhinandan Vohra (2.5), Vipnesh Bhardwaj (2.5), C.M. Sharma, Devanshu, Ashwani Kumar, Pritpal Singh, Sunil Bansal, Partha Sarkar, Ripudaman and Muneesh Sabharwal (two points each).

CYCLING MEET: The Chandigarh Cycling Championship for senior, junior and sub-junior boys and girls; to be organised by the Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association, will be held on February 1 on the Panjab University campus. Entries close with Mr Rakesh Mohindra at 98157-18182.
