While Nisha Sharma set the trend by refusing to marry a dowry-hungry groom, other brave girls have started following her. Only two days ago, a Ludhiana girl refused to tie the nuptial knot with a greedy bridegroom. The barat had to return “empty-handed”. Had it not been for the intervention of some family friends, the greedy groom and his parents would have landed up in prison.

The Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) will participate in the SGPC and Parliament elections for which programme for conferences was drawn up at a meeting on Wednesday, said Mr Ravinder Singh Khalsa, district president, youth wing, in a press note here today.

Sagged bridge troubles motorists

The Sidhuwal Bridge over Bhakra canal on the Amloh-Patiala road has sagged. As a result, heavy vehicles, including buses, have been diverted through link roads. Motorists have to cover around 10 km extra besides taking more time to reach their destination.

As a mandate of the Apparel Exporters Association of Ludhiana (APPEAL) — a subcontracting exchange to promote apparel from Ludhiana — a special pavilion is being created at the 32nd India International Garment Fair (IIGF) to be held in New Delhi on request of APPEAL.

Fill posts, demand unemployed teachers
Amloh, December 31
A combined meeting of unemployed teachers (ETT) of Ludhiana and Fatehgarh Sahib districts was held at the local Government Secondary School on Monday.
At the meeting, chaired by Mr Mandeep Singh, state committee member and district president of Fatehgarh Sahib, resentment was expressed over the delay in the selection of elementary teachers for regular appointment against vacant posts.

Ramgarhia Council holds meeting

An executive committee meeting of the Ramgarhia Educational Council was held under the presidentship of Mr Jagat Singh. Mr Jagtar Singh Bhambra, general secretary of the council, told members that the birthday of 10th Guru Gobind Singh would be celebrated at the Ramgarhia gurdwara under the patronage of the council.

Cultural activities kept residents busy
Ludhiana, December 31
Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his august company had Tiranga staged in Parliament. Tiranga was a unique programme conceived by Durga Jasraj. It showed the history of Tricolour- how it came into existence, how it got its present shape, and how people died for it. Javed Akhtar had composed verses for the three colours- orange, white and green and finally the Tiranga.

Hospital to open new centre today
Ludhiana, December 31
Mohan Dai Oswal Memorial Hospital will open its new centre at Vakella Mohalla, Purana Bazaar, here tomorrow. Dr Satish Jain, Medical Superintendent of the Research Centre, in a press note today said the centre would provide treatment for all type of diseases. OPDs in medicine, surgery, gynae, orthopaedics, eye, ENT, chest and TB, skin, paediatrics and dental, besides family planning clinic, will be run on regular basis.

MC removes encroachments
Ludhiana, December 31
The municipal corporation today continued its drive against encroachments on roads and streets in the city. In an effective operation, which lasted well over two hours, a team of MC officials partly pulled down at least 12 shops, including a liquor shop and an ahata in the congested Gill Chowk area here.

Anti-encroachment drive yields results
Jagraon, December 31
The drive against encroachments initiated a month ago by the local administrator along with the Executive Officer of the Municipal Council has started yielding results with most of the business community reducing the width of their shades to four feet, as permitted by the authorities.
