Discussion to enforce PNDT Act

Ludhiana, December 10
The Advisory Committee of the District Health Department held a meeting of officials on the enforcement of the PNDT Act in the district at the Civil Surgeon’s office here today.

The meeting was chaired by the president of the local unit of the Indian Medical Association, Dr Gursharan Singh. Senior medical officers at the subdivisional level also attended the meeting.

Dr S.N. Tiwari, Civil Surgeon, said after registering two more ultrasound centres, a total of 194 centres were registered in the district so far. He stressed that the ultrasonologist should be properly qualified. He directed the medical officers to punish the persons indulging in the unethical practice of female foeticide or sex determination test severely.

The meeting was attended by Dr Kuldeep Kaur Sahni, District Vaccination Officer, Ms Pappo Abnash, a social activist (NGO), Dr K.J.S. Kakkar, District Family Welfare Officer, Mr J.S. Bindra and Dr Rajinder Gulati.

Physiotherapy camp

Ludhiana, December 10
The free physiotherapy camp, organised by Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (from December 8-13, 2003) has got an overwhelming response in the first three days itself with nearly 200 patients having received treatment and physiotherapy consultation.

While talking about their observations about the senior citizens, the team of experienced physiotherapists comprising Dr Satwinder Kalra, Dr Sameer, Dr Akash, Dr Praveen, Dr Alka and Dr Parneet, providing treatment to the elderly at the camp, revealed that most of the elderly were highly depressed on part of ageing and took the disease process as part of ageing. They kept on delaying the treatment either due to ignorance or due to negligence. OC

LIC zonal athletics meet from Dec 12

Ludhiana, December 10
Around 100 athletes will be vying for top honours during the two-day 37th Northern Zonal Athletics Meet of the Life Insurance Corporation of India, slated to be held here at the Punjab Agricultural University grounds on December 12 and 13.

According to Mr P.K. Rath, Senior Divisional Manager, LIC, during the meet teams from divisions of Amritsar, Ajmer, Bikaner, Chandigarh, Delhi-I, Delhi-II, Delhi-III, Jalandhar, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Karnal, Ludhiana, Shimla, Jammu, Udaipur and Northern Zonal Office, New Delhi will be participating in various disciplines.

Among the prominent participants to be seen in action included stalwarts like Arjuna awardee Gurmeet Kaur, a bronze medal winner (javelin throw) in the 2002 Busan Asian Games and Sunil Goswami, a javelin throw national champion. Mr R.S. Sodhi, Regional Manager (Personnel) will declare the meet open on Friday.
