11 theft cases solved, seven held
Ludhiana, November 15
The district police today claimed to have solved 11 cases of theft registered at Basti Jodhewal police station by arresting seven persons who have confessed to having committed the crimes. The seven arrested persons are Chandan Kumar and Shashi Kumar from Muzzafar Nagar, Bihar, and Kulwant Singh, Vipan Kumar, Sukhwinder Singh, Jatinder Kumar and Gurdeep Singh of Ludhiana.

Martyr’s cousin threatens to renounce title
Ludhiana, November 15
A day before the martyrdom day of Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha, his cousin, Bibi Jagdish Kaur has again threatened to renounce the title of ‘‘Punjab Mata’’ in protest against the stopping of preservation work on the Sarabha memorial in his native village, near here.

Man, wife get life term for murder
Ludhiana, November 15
Mr Baldev Singh, Sessions Judge, has sentenced Darshan Singh (50) and his wife Manjit Kaur (40) of Khandoori village to undergo life imprisonment for killing Ranjit Kaur in November, 2001.

Work to cover drain with slabs begins
Ludhiana, November 15
Congress legislator Surinder Dawar commenced the work for laying slabs on a small open drain in Field Ganj in Ward No 51 at a function. Speaking on the occasion, he said with the completion of the work at a cost of Rs 8 lakh, a long-pending demand of the local residents would stand fulfilled and the problem of overflowing water entering into the houses on both sides would be solved permanently.

Spurious drugs worth lakhs being sold in city

Spurious medicines worth lakhs of rupees are being brought and sold in the city openly by the drug mafia around the region. According to the latest reports, out of the Rs 20,000-crore pharmaceutical market in India, spurious drugs alone amount to nearly Rs 4,000 crore.

Bank manager caught taking bribe
Ludhiana, November 15
The Ludhiana Vigilance Bureau yesterday claimed to have caught a bank manager for taking bribe from a city resident in order to clear a loan. Surinder Chopra, Manager, UCO Bank, Lalton, was caught in a raid by the Vigilance Bureau at his residence in New Kitchlu Nagar here.

Punjab seeks freight subsidy on egg export
Ludhiana, November 15
The state government has sought freight subsidy from the Centre on export of eggs from Punjab through the Kandla port in order to increase their demand and marketability so that poultry farmers in the state can earn more benefits.

For once, paddy procurement leaves farmers happy
Ludhiana, November 15
As the paddy procurement comes to a close in the district, farmers have expressed satisfaction over the procurement process by the government agencies. Official procurement began on October 1 and is almost close now after the procurement of the late varieties of paddy which were being brought to one of the biggest mandis in Asia here.

Indo-Canadian Chair proposed at PAU

Punjab Agricultural University and the University of Colleges of the Fraser Valley, British Columbia (Canada), have agreed in principle to set up an Indo-Canadian Chair in the Department of Business Management of the PAU.

State-level cultural contests from tomorrow
Ludhiana, November 15
State-level inter-school cultural contests being organised by the Punjab School Education Board will be held at four local schools from November 17.
On the first day, contests in calligraphy and painting for the primary, elementary and secondary groups will be held at Ramgarhia Senior Secondary School.

Ludhiana, November 15
The local Guru Nanak Girls College, organised extension lectures on botany, zoology and chemistry today. Dr SS Kumar, retired Professor of the Department of Botany, Panjab University, who is at present serving as a Senator, delivered a lecture on “plant diversity”.

Guru Gobind Singh Public School, Model Town Extension, organised shabad singing and other competitions here today. As many as 99 students participated. In Gurbani recitation, Sukhjeet of LKG, Jasjot Kaur of LKG and Jaspreet Singh of Nursery won the first, second and third prizes, respectively, among the students of the first category.

Creations-2003, the two-day annual exhibition of models, charts and art and craft items organised at Tagore Public School, Aggar Nagar, concluded here today. The exhibition was divided into four sections — art and craft, science, social science and information technology.
